As a hardcore boho 'Beat' kid, I was raised with the soundtrack of Kurt Weil/Bertolt Brecht's "Threepenny Opera." In fact, Lotte Lenya was probably the first singing voice I heard after my Mom - who used to sing to me when I was a little child.
Many years later I read the play/musical and was taken back at its cynical look in how society works. It's an amazing piece of theater and the music is and will always be superb.

I was briefly obsessed with the song Mack the Knife and its variations after hearing the Lotte Lenya version from the show. My next favorite might have been the eerie nasal version with lots of dreamy steel guitar by Jimmie Dale Gilmore. oh and the play was good too.

The Grove Press edition is worth reading for its inclusion of Brecht's essay on the epic theater; the aims and techniques propounded here have been employed in all manner of forms besides the theater, with varying degrees of efficacy.

I love Brecht. I first saw the play in 8th grade and died, ever since then I try to see it when I can. It's comes alive much more on the stage...

Vibrant, frivolous, captivating snapshot of tragic German jazz age.
