More actiony than the first book, and not quite as gripping for me, as the characters just tumbled from chase to chase, and weird enemy creature to weird enemy creature. Readers who like that, however, will eat the book up, and I'm still fascinated enough to read the next book. I admire Scott's grasp of world myth and legend--in that respect he's up there with Neil Gaiman, Jane Lindskold, and Guy Gavriel Kay!

I love anything to do with Alchemy and having recently spent time in Paris this adventure was doubly entertaining for me.
It's about twin teenagers who find their own magic and deal with the magic that surrounds them in the modern day streets of Paris. The author's wildly imaginative concepts are dark and dangerous. This is fun read for those who are still in touch with the child within.

Fiuuuhh....seruuu!!! Harus diakui, Michael Scott memang jago bikin pembaca (saya) tersihir dan enggan berhenti sebelum tiba di halaman terakhir. Seperti sedang menonton film saja rasanya. Tadinya sempat 'curiga' kalau sekuel The Alchemyst ini nggak akan sebagus buku pertama, tapi ternyata kecurigaan saya tidak beralasan.

So, I look down at all the reviews, and I see all these five stars. WOW.

This book started out with TONS of promise, introducing Machiavelli with the Kabuki masks. But then the book progresses.. you start to predict the next thread in the story line. My goal for this week was to start a new book. I started a new book. I read pages 1-358. I read a lot. In the book the magician Nicholas Flamel took the 2 twins from the prophecy, Sophie and Josh, to Paris with the help of Scatty. The only complaint that I have about the Magician is the same complaint that I had about the Alchemyst - where is the next book?

Michael Scott deftly picks up Sophie and Josh's story where the Alchemyst left off. And although it had been over a year since I had read Alchemyst, I was never lost or feeling that I needed to go back and re-read the first book. Mr. Scott did a wonderful job of weaving pieces of book 1 into the Magician.

I liked the first book very much. This is a direct continuation, and I do believe it is even better. The book is longer which allows for more character development and there are a host of new mythologies and legends woven neatly into the story.

Book one was set in the US, book two takes up the story in France and I think Scott will bring us back to the US for book three.

This was a great book. The first book flowed right into this one and made it a great read. I love adventure books and this book had suspense at every turn. There were many dead ends that the characters came out of alive and well. The last part kind of shocked me a little. Yet another children's fantasy book!!!

I borrowed this book from work and it was the sequel to the first one, the alchemyst. i couldn't borrow the first one b/c we didn't have the hardcover edition and we are only allowed to borrow hard covers. But, I loved it so much I bought the first book to read it.

Egads, what a moronic bullturd this book was. I wanted to see whether the sequel might have possessed any redeeming qualities, but didn't meet any on the way. It's as if the author fished out some sleazy Mary Sue fanfiction from of the pits of FF.net, squashed it together with some hideously sodomized bits of world mythology, and went off begging for publishing rights. I don't understand the abundance of 5-star reviews here. Seems like people's tastes have REALLY sunk these days.

Michael Scott is, to say the least, charming and intelligent. I was enchanted by his ability to take classical mythological creatures and weave them together into a complicated, vast universe. He is, truly, a talented writer. This is an excellent, very intelligent and well-designed series, although certainly a step away from my regular literary feasts.

I'm going to be honest here. I did not read this book. My ten-year-old daughter did, and the following is her review that she wrote.

I loved The Magician so much that the moment I got it, I read to page 72 without stopping. The beginning two sentences rocked: “I am dying. Parenelle, too, is dying.” It had a great story concept and it was outstanding. My favorite character was Scatty. If I were to pick one person to be in the book, it would be her.

I read the first of The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, The Alchemyst and it was great. You can look at my review for it here. So, I had both The Alchemyst and The Magician on my bookshelf for the longest time and never picked them up. I see now that this was a huge mistake. These books are awesome! The Magician was a good follow up to The Alchemyst - and a good book to read on a day when I was stuck in bed with an achy weariness brought on by a cold. Like its predecessor, The Magician follows Sophie and Josh Newman as they learn more about their own magical powers and see more and more myths and legends come alive.

I especially liked seeing more of Sophie and Josh in this book and seeing their relationship begin to evolve and sort itself out as they tackle diverging experiences. More...

I am absolutely amazed, I really don't know why I haven't read Michael Scott before! I have read all the books back-to-back and one after the other!

I read this second book in the series much more quickly than the first. The action kept me on my toes and there were story lines happening in many different areas. The author's writing style is such that the reader gets to read from the perspective of many different characters. When I read the previous book, I was absolutely sure that this one would be even more fascinating. That is why I looked forward to starting it.

With every single page I was reading, I was getting more and more into the story. It was like I am one of the characters inspite of the fact that my name isn't mentioned anywhere in the book.

This sequel to The Alchemist is everything that a sequel should be. In many ways it lives up to everything that made me love the first book to begin with. And the cast of characters that gets added -- wow! I have always enjoyed the historical fiction bent, that is, taking actual characters from history and including them into the story. This is a brilliant sequel to the amazing first book! I read half of the book in the two hours my sister spent doing her community service in the library. I didn't even notice that I read that far until my mother called my phone and disrupted the silence of the library with a loud ringtone. It was an embarrassing few seconds.
