Winner of the 2007 Fraunces Tavern Museum Book Award! Samuel Adams is perhaps the most unheralded and overshadowed of the founding fathers, yet without him there would have been no American Revolution. A genius at devising civil protests and political maneuvers that became a trademark of American politics, Adams astutely forced Britain into coercive military measures ...more

Mark Puls' Samuel Adams: Father of the American Revolution is a quick read. It provides a useful sketch of one of the Revolution's major figures--Samuel Adams.

The book takes a chronological perspective, beginning with Adams' childhood and the experiences with his father, a well regarded local businessman (including owning a malt shop) and community leader (becoming a deacon in his church and a member of the legislature).

The story continues with his education and efforts...more

I had never realized how invloved Samuel Adams was in the start of the US. It's frustrating that few history books recognize him as one of our founding fathers when he was practically the one who started the Revolution armed with his pen. Why isn't Samuel Adams on the front of the hundred dollar bill when most of his adult life was devoted to making America a country of its own seperate from England? I can only guess that he isn't as well known because he never cared to be famous or powerful.

This was a really great read. Lots of facts about the pre-revolution and the writing of the Declaration that we don't get taught in school. I mean how many schools teach how important Sam Adams was to the Revolution? It might not have happended without him. He was also the creator of political mechanisms that are still in use today, like caucuses and boycotts. We should know more about Sam Adams then just that there is a beer named after him. I'm teaching my kids about him and everyone else...more

Amazing man! A patient, persevering patriot. This book gave me hope because I learned that there were just as many morons in his time as there are now and we just need quiet, tireless leaders like Sam with real convictions and morals to work behind the scenes to right the ship. It's too bad that most Americans only know him for his beer since that was definitely NOT something that he was good at. Without him, we'd still be British subjects. He has made his way onto my hero list (right below Geor...more

This was a very interesting read, and after doing so, I came to realize that he was one of the most dedicated patriots this country has ever seen. It is also quite ironic that he was a failed beer distributor (as you'll read in this book), and he has a beer named after him.

Restores Adams to his rightful place as the father of the American Revolution. Adams broke from the Burkean notion that liberty comes from custom and argues for natural rights. Great read with plenty of quotes.

Not the greatest book ever written, but informative. The author's writing style isn't very creative but it is nice to read an entire book devoted to this great man.

a crankier, less honorable version of john adams yet his crankiness was a necessarry element of the revolutionary movement
Brent
Much I didn't know about the other Adams of the American revolution.
Joan
Well written! As I was reading Samuel Adams I felt as if I was here.

Well-written and engaging in style, but could have used a good fact/date check in the editing process.
Also, Puls at the end pushes Adams into his own (and Jefferson's) philosophical camp, rather than leaving him ambiguous as to his political leanings, as Puls admits he was earlier in the book (i.e. for revolution, but always working within the law; anti-federalist in spirit, but votes for the federalist Constitution; etc).

I found this book very engaging and an overall good read. There is little information available on the life of Samuel Adams, and I feel that this book is a good effort to fill that void. Adams is largely misunderstood and misrepresented in our school's textbooks (when he is mentioned at all). Kudos to Puls for his effort to place Samuel Adams in his proper place in American history.

I am very much enjoying this book, though my time to read is rather limited. Samuel Adams was quite a guy, focused on liberty like a laser. He valued, not wealth nor possessions, but his family, his country, his liberty, and worked tirelessly for them, in spite of poor health. There is much to admire in this "founding father" of the United States of America.

This book follows Samuel Adams through his life and really works hard to show his importance in the American Revolution. Samual Adams, the cousin of John Adams was a true blue rebel and was calling for our independence from British rule as early at the 1760s.

Peter
The father of the American Revolution, a brilliant political strategist and master propagandist. Underrated as one of the "Founders".
Emily
This book was great. It introduces the reader to a little known hero of the American Revolution. I found this book to be informative and interesting. I could not put it down.

It was an ok read. Not all that profound or insightful. Vanilla flavored sums it up!
