So far this book is pretty good. Its about a 16 year old boy named Danny and he is half Mexican and half white. His father is Mexican and his mother is white. His dad left him when he was little and Danny thinks its because he was tired of being around so many white people. Before his dad left he told Danny that he did something crazy and a lot of stuff was going to change because of it.
Danny is kind of ins More...

Danny Lopez goes to National City, just south of San Diego to spend the summer with his father’s relatives when his mother and sister go off to San Francisco with his mother’s new boyfriend. At home he felt like an outsider in his preppie private school because of being half-Mexican. In National City he feels like an outsider because he looks so white and speaks no Spanish. In the course of the summer he teams up with Uno, a kid who is half African-American and half Hispanic in a scheme using hi More...

This Book Is Literally The Most Mind-Drawing Book that ive ever read. When i first saw this book in Borders, I only picked it out because i saw a guy pitching on the cover. I had no idea the book was gonna be the way it was. Mexican White is about a boy who is trying to find out who he really is in life. Danny's father is mexican but his mother is white with blonde hair and blue eyes. This summer he is staying with his cousin and her family who are from his fathers side. throughout this book Dan More...

From the author of _Ball Don't Lie_ comes another excellent book that nails baseball but is about much more.

Danny is wicked gifted when it comes to baseball--he can knock baseballs out of the park, and his pitching maxes out the meter at the local fair even when he was smashed. But he couldn't throw anything but wild pitches the tryouts at his prep school, and not even he can understand why.

His number one theory, though, is that things would be different if his dad were More...

Mexican White Boy was about a teenager named danny Lopez from norther san diego, california whom is narrating his life. danny was trying to fit in but it wasn't working but he was going down to mexico for the summer to see his fathers side of the family. but when he got to mexico he found out he really didn't fit in there either. danny's mother was white and danny's father was mexican. so where ever he went he felt left out and not in place. danny was welcome to play baseball with the local kids More...

Mexican Whiteboy is about a boy named Danny that is struggling to find his place in life. He resembles his father (who is mexican) more then his mother who is white. This causes him to feel lost, and so he searches for his identity. (not literally) He stays with his cousin Sophia for the summer in an enviornment that is more suited to his heritage. Here he plays baseball, a sport he is extrodinarly good at. He also learns that his mother is moving in with her boyfriend, and he gives Danny and hi More...

The story of Danny, a product of a broken home with an absentee father, who is struggling to find his niche in society as a boy of two distinct races, takes place in California. The story could fit in many major metropolitan areas, Chicagoland included. And I have met Danny on a number of occasions I am sure in my decade plus of teaching. He is a quiet kid, and a talented one at that. The author gives Danny dimension by characterizing him as an athlete with ability but no team, with skill bu More...

In the story Mexican whiteboy by Matt De La Pena , a teenager named Danny comes to stay with his cousina over the summer. The type of kid Danny is; he is a quiet guy never says a word. Danny loves to play baseball and belives is the funnest thing to do in the world. Danny's cousin Sofia is always backing up Danny no matter what the situation is. Danny accidently hit someones little brother on the nose with a bat but got beat up for doing that. One thing that i have learned from this book is tha More...

Mexican Whiteboy is an interesting book. It is unique from other books. It is a shocking story with a lot of visualizing you could imagine. The story is about a shy, sixteen year old boy, Danny, who has a Mexican dad and an American mom. He goes to live with his cousin Sofie. He is shy and loves baseball. One day, he sees boys playing baseball and his cousin Sofe puts him in the game. After the rest of the boys, especially the best one, Uno, see that Danny is good, Uno throws bad pitches. In my 10th grade English class, one of our projects was to read a book of our choice, and write a review on it. My book choice was, Mexican white boy, by Matt De La Pena.

This book had first caught my attention when I heard what it was about. Being half Mexican, and half American, like Danny in the book, I connected easily, Danny as well having no father, I too have no father. Another reason why this book caught my attention in the first place that isn’t just like any o More...

From what I read of it, Mexican Whiteboy is about Danny who spends the summer with his cousin in Mexico, secretly in search of his father who up and left some years ago. Danny is a 16 year old half mexican and his main problem is fitting-in with everybody.
I think the lesson in this book is kind of like dont judge a book by its cover. Like, Uno and all his friends didnt think Danny could play baseball because he was shy and light skinned.

The book Mexican WhiteBoy mainly takes place in National City when Danny Lopez visits his father’s side of the family. Danny is just a teenager who is struggling to find his identity in life. He’s a quiet, shy, and calm guy who wishes he could truly be himself around others. Back in California no one really noticed him because he was half-Mexican. But in National City, he was noticed more because he was so pale for a Mexican when everyone else was so dark skinned compared to him. While his stay More...

Mexican Whiteboy takes place National City, a small run down ghetto near the border of Mexico and California. Danny Lopez, the main character, has the speed and built to be a star pitcher, yet there is one problem; he cannot control his fastball. Danny's father left him when he was a child, and Danny thinks that it was because of something he did. He sets out on a mission to become a "better" Mexican and find his dad and make him proud. Throughout his journey to find himself D. meets s More...

Recommended by fabulous Youth Librarian Deborah, I initially had to put down this YA novel because it was a bit too gritty for me. I get excited when I read YA literature that tells stories of other classes and cultures, yet the characters reminded me of the students I volunteered with at a middle school. Were they doing some of the things these characters were? Also, after all these years, I still feel uncomfortable with teenagers drinking. It throws me right back to my high school awkwardness More...

If you are the type of person who loves a fast-paced book with a twisting plot, this is not the book for you. However, if you are the type of person who loves a detailed, in-depth character sketch of a young man coming to terms with his identity, then this is a highly recommended read. "Mexican Whiteboy" is one of those well-written books that is like a window, allowing the reader to glimpse the lives of others and to see life from another perspective. This book deals with a myriad More...

Amazing story about two young boys who have trouble dealing with family problems and other issues surrounding their teenage lives. Danny is an all-star pitcher who loves the game of baseball. Everyday he goes out to the park were his dad used to play and work on each one of his different pitches. The only problem is, Danny doesn't have anyone to catch his throws. His dad would have been there in a second, if he knew his dad. As the story progresses, Danny, with the help of his cousin and friends More...

These lyrics by Eminem really remind me of this book because Eminem's fear was rapping in front of others for a really long time [ if you watched 8 mile , you would understand ] but when he was alone he was super good and that's basically the same thing with Danny he can pitch really really well when he's alone but when he's around others he loses his control.

i generally love sports movies, so why not a sports book? though a big part of the book focuses on baseball, there is so much more depth and substance to it. the title makes you think that there is going to be a lot of discussion about danny's race, but it actually isn't a focal point - it's merely a fact. though danny is the main character, uno plays such a big part that i almost feel like he deserves to have a place in the title as well.

A good book. (I think my tolerance for books with lots of suffering in them is going up from the reading list for this class. When I actually WAS a teen, I would have put this down at the end and said, “Ack, fistfights and cutting and brutality. Somebody get me Howl’s Moving Castle and some kittens, stat.”)

I was impressed that Danny was so relatable, given that his failure to talk at some important moments could have been incredibly annoying to readers. Danny and Uno’s interest i More...

This sat on my bookshelf for several months until I picked it up earlier this week. Do I not like orange dustjackets? Was I unconsciously wary of there being too many baseball-related plot points? I don't know -- I'm just sorry it took me so long to read it. I enjoyed getting to know the characters, loved the economy of the language, and even thought the baseball stuff was totally and completely interesting. I liked how De la Peña drops the reader into the middle of the action, both in the begin More...

Danny, who is tall and skinny but has a talent for pitching a fastball, cannot seem to fit in at school in San Diego, where his Mexican and white heritage causes people to judge him before he even speaks. - From library catalog record

Having a white mom and a Mexican dad leaves 16 yr old Danny feeling like he belongs nowhere, not at the white prep school he attends on scholarship nor the San Diego area barrio where his Spanish-speaking relatives live.
