Here's a cozy mystery with a new twist--the amateur sleuth is a real estate agent. So is the author. It seems like a great occupation for a detective as real estate agents certainly run into a wide variety of interesting clients, interact with people in tense situations (buying a house), and are privy to all sorts of private (particularly financial) information about said clients. In this case, agent Regan McHenry is confronted with a seller who is late for the closing. The seller is an elderly ...more
Regan McHenry is happily living her life and loving her Santa Cruz real estate business. But when the seller of a house disappears, it causes major problems for Regan’s buyers who are trying to close the process of buying his house. When Regan notices that some things just don’t add up, she tries to figure out why. She really isn’t interested in investigating; she just wants to make sense of the situation. "Regan McHenry is a Santa Cruz real estate agent whose work puts her in the midst of mystery, mayhem, and even murder. The amateur sleuth uses techniques she's learned during her career and skills she's honed as a keen observer of human nature to solve crimes. She just doesn't always figure things out soon enough to stay out of trouble.

"Regan's business on the upper west side of town has been putting her so close to so many deaths, her associates have started calling her 'the grim reaperette.'

The Death Contingency is a first rate mystery in the amateur detective tradition. The plot is well constructed without any gimmicks or tricks though the ending wasn’t quite what I expected. The writing is so good that it became unnoticeable as I became engrossed in the story. The characters are engaging, particularly the heroine realtor Regan McHenry. I appreciated the humor that occasionally lightened the narrative. I recommend this work for lovers of the amateur detective genre without reserva ...more

Nancy Lynn Jarvis did a superb job of mixing real estate info with the curiosity of her main character Regan McHenry. This story contained a roller coaster ride for the reader as one suspect after another was detained and then discharged. The author kept you guessing right till the end. good job.
This was a quick read. Kept me guessing to the end; did he do it, didn't he do it? I kept changing my mind, but was never sure until the end.

I didn’t read her books in order, this one was ok but way too much Reality on the salesperson side! If this was the first one I had read, wouldn’t have read the second but maybe from the middle on to the ending was good!

I liked the premise--the realtor protagonist--but for me there were too many real estate anecdotes and not enough mystery.
