I haven't tried any recipes yet. The reason I'm keeping the book: There's an easy to use recipe list at the back that makes browsing easier, there's a tidbit explaining each recipe at the top, easy to read prep/cooking/serving and both an English and Indian name for each dish. Briefly going through a few recipes, the ingredient lists aren't incredibly long - they look doable. She has an intro on Indian and vegan diet for optimal health at the beginning. 3.5 - it was nice to stumble upon this at the library, because while most indian food can be easily made vegetarian/vegan, it's nice to look at a book where i don't have to mentally subtract all of that stuff. for the most part, this is a pretty straightforward book, good for beginners into indian cooking, and a non-threatening recipe style that allows you to make easy choices and substitutions or take some shortcuts without getting too caught up in inaccessibility to certain ingredients. it's a ...more
I picked up this book on a whim at the book store and am glad that I did. The recipes are flavourful and I use them often to create nourishing, healthy, tasty meals. I am vegetarian, but I think even those who are not vegetarian/vegan would enjoy these meals.

Roti: I love this kind of bread but I'm not skilled at making it. The recipe gives the ingredients and some tips on rolling it out and cooking it, but I would have loved step-by-step photos to guide me through the process.

Okra and onions (bhindi pyaj): Adults loved this dish, which was easy to prepare and packed some heat. Kiddo, not so much.
