Ok, so.. First of all - I liked this book better than the first one. Of course, Darina is still one of the most selfish characters I've EVER read about, which should say alot. The way she doesn't care about how she's actually helping the "Beautiful Dead," but she centers mostly aroung how important it is that she gets a few months longer with her dead boyfriend. Alright, so this is the second in the beautiful dead series, and slightly better than the first.

So the author still hasn't gotten over her focus on weird names. We have to accept that everyone in the town refuses to consider calling their children 'John' or 'Mary'. Oh no, everyone likes Arizona, Phoenix and Raven. Once you struggle through this, the plot reads almost identical to the first. You see, Arizona is thought to have killed herself by drowning in the local lake. Despite her tendencies to be a bit of a loner it was never determined why she would have done so. Even Arizona herself is somewhat convinced that she may have taken her own life. The thing of it is she can’t be one-hundred percent sure because even the Beautiful Dead don’t remember every aspect of their death or the situations that surround it.

That’s why they need Darina. She can investigate where they can’t and let me tell you, investigate she does.

As a refresher, the Beautiful Dead are a group of recently departed who have unresolved issues. They have exactly a year from their date of death to resolve the issues before they move from their middle-groundish half life (the one where Darina can see and interact with them) into the otherworld. How they pass on and where they pass on to is part of the urgency of the situation

As was the case when she was helping Jonas bring closure to his circumstances Darina takes the bull by the horns and digs into the lives of the Arizona, her friends and her family. As one would expect, this doesn’t always go over well. In this case it’s particularly hostile. Distant parents who want to just forget about the suicide shut Darina and the only people Arizona ever loved and trusted (her younger brother and her grandparents) out completely. I can’t even begin to describe the scenario with the boy she was dating. The is danger and urgency and did I mention danger?

All of the big bad of sleuthing Arizona’s demise isn’t all that’s going on though. The love between Pheonix and Darina is still alive and kicking. It does border on obsession on her part at times (particularly the beginning) but I genuinely believe that this kind of rapt behavior is true to teenage life. Girls this age tend to feel like they could “die” without their boyfriend. In this case I believe the sorrow Darina feels and the need to spend as much time as she knows she has left with Pheonix intensifies this feeling even more. For his part, Pheonix is equally in love with her. His behavior is more reserved, far more measured and much more calculated but that has a lot to do with his particular circumstances and the fact that not all decisions he makes are his own.

The ultimate decision-maker, as always, is Hunter, whose life I was glad to see much more of in this book. It was good to get some perspective on why he is the way he is and why he dislikes Darina so much. It’s not all about mortal vs. angel in this case, his troubles run much deeper than that. This adds an element to the story where the dynamics between he and the Beautiful Dead and Darina are even more intensified. It’s quite an interesting addition to the story overall, particularly because there was a fair share of push/pull to the overall concept.

The plot in this book was much better than the first. Still not entirely unpredictable but I thought that there was more depth to Arizona than there was to Jonas. Her circumstances seemed much more dire yet still relatable. I can’t give too much away as the book really centers on several big aspects of her life and the twists and turns that surround them, but I will say they were compelling and kept my interest throughout.

I’m still enjoying this series and am looking forward to the next read which focuses on Summer’s story.(less)

I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to catch on with this book because it is the second one in a series and I will admit I didn't read the first one Beautiful Dead Jonas. I like the fact that the novel represents that second chances are not always avalible and at hand, but that when they are, they are time limited and we should use it wisely in order to understand what has happened, and how we can make the correct changes.

The book is almost like a discovery of the self, where the characters have to go back over their past to figure out what has happened to them, and that whilst they are doing this they begin to understand what sort of person they were, and how they made others, around them feel. I love the drama that the book contains for it seems that there is always something happening and going on, which means that you never get bored, because there isn't a dull moment in the book. The thing between Darina and Logan though is starting to drive me a little around the bend, because although you don't want her to fall in love with someone else because she has Phoenix, you also want her to, because why should she spend a life alone. you get this feeling that at some point in the books it is going to happen.

However in this novel, it was Arizona's stuck up attitude that really grasped me and made me smile. It just seemed to have been written perfectly, in that although a person acts big headed and important, it does not mean that they have the perfect line. I just felt that the author really made the reader sit back and take a look at the aspects of her life, because she made the reader feel for her. By showing that her life was complicated, that she had a lot of things going on in the background, you realize what it is that people do in order to make themselves feel better and alive.

I loved the story and I look forward to reading the next two in the series for I feel there is much potential for them and that many young adults will love them. Im considering introducing them to my sister!!!(less)

Příběh Krásných mrtvých je opravdu zajímavý. Pouze ti vybraní se po své smrti mohou vrátit zpět právě jako Krásní mrtví, aby zjistili, co se vlastně stalo, případně aby něco napravili, dokončili anebo úplně zachránili. Mají ale pouze rok na to, aby něco udělali. Potom odejdou, a svou šanci získají další Krásní mrtví. Arizona je právě jedním z nich, a jako ostatní, si vůbec nepamatuje okolnosti své smrti. Sama ale vše zvládnout nemůže, a proto se Krásní mrtví dohodli s Darinou, aby jim pomáhala.
Darina nedisponuje žádnými nadpřirozenými silami a přeci s k této „práci“ dostala. A jak že vlastně? Aby v tom nebyl chlap! Její přítel Phoenix Rohr totiž patří ke Krásným mrtvým! Stal se objetí násilného činu… Jak se to ale všechno stalo? To ani on neví!

Už po přečtení prvního dílu ze série Krásní mrtví, který nesl název Jonas, bylo jasné, že Arizonin příběh bude patřit k těm zajímavějším, dokonce by se mohl stát králem série. Arizona totiž už od začátku představovala pěkný oříšek. Holka, která si všechny drží od těla a nikomu se nesvěřuje? Kdo by se nechtěl o ní něco dozvědět? Zvědavost máme přeci v povaze všichni. A hodně zvědavosti! Její příběh nezklame. Přinese vše, co jsme od Arizony očekávali a i něco navíc.
Knize musím ale vytknout, že celá osnova příběhu se shoduje s prvním dílem. Darina se rozčiluje kvůli Phoenixovi, vyhledá Krásné mrtvé a dostane úkol. Ten se snaží co nejrychleji mít za sebou, aby se zase mohla zabývat svým „vztahem“, ale její úkol ji nenechá spát, dokončí ho zase za pět minut dvanáct, rozloučí se s Arizonou a padne Phoenixovi kolem krku. Pořád ta stejná písnička… Jediné, co může čtenáře tak nějak překvapit, je Arizonin osud, ale žádné větší zvraty nebo jen další zápletky, které by doplňovali hlavní dějové linie, v knize nenajdeme.
Autorka si je ale více jistá v kramflecích a celý příběh podává s větší jistotou. Zabývá se ale pouze hlavním tématem své knihy a na nic dalšího nehledí, takže příběh sleduje pouze dvě dějové linie: Arizonin příběh a Darinin život. A při tom by se tam našlo několik bočních vrátek, které by nebylo zas tak špatně rozvinout.

Darina je jak dvě strany mince. V jednu chvíli rozumná a rozvážná holka, která se snaží pomoci, aby mohla strávit víc času s Phoenixem, Pak jí ale přeskočí a ona se chová jako psychopat a zaobírá se pouze svým vztahem. "Darina" je v těchto scénách strašná, ještě pořád ale vystupuje sama. Na scénu vstoupí její zombie miláček a všechno jde s Darinou i „Darinou“ hezky rychle do kytek. Ti dva se starají jenom sami o sebe a nikdo jiný pro ně neexistuje!

Arizona je rozhodně o hodně lepší než Jonas. Autorka má ale ještě co dohánět na zpracování určitých scén. Jednou za čas se totiž stane a díky bohu, že ne zase tolikrát, že na scénu přijdou „Darina“ s Phoenixem. A vás bude trochu pálit žáha z té umělé „sladkosti“.
Přes to všechno je ale čtenář zvědaví na pokračování. Chce totiž vědět, zda Krásní mrtví mají nějaký hlubší smysl a jak vlastně spolu souvisí čtyři mrtví studenti střední školy, kteří zemřeli v průběhu jednoho roka. Námět knihy je dobrý a zajímavý a všechno do sebe příjemně zapadá. I zpracování akčnějších a dobrodružnějších částí příběhu má jistou úroveň.(less)

I liked the first book but I didn't really find Jonas all that interesting.

Phoenix and Darina have me hooked. I'm dying to know what happens between them.

I certainly liked this one a lot better than the first one. I connected with Arizona a lot more in this book. I find it incredibly sad, she was hurting so much on the inside yet she tried to pretend like everything was okay when it clearly wasn't. Poor Raven, he is such a nice kid. The second instalment of the Beautiful Dead series is as engaging and easy to read as the first.

I really love the mysteries of Jonas, Arizona, Summer and Phoenix’s deaths. the ones that we’ve explored so far are no where near as simple as they first seem. I love being so completely wrong about what really happened! To me, that’s one of things that say great writing.

Arizona is one tough nut to crack.

2nd book in the Beautiful Dead series, Daria must help Arizona figure out if she really drowned in Hartmann Lake. However, Arizona is keeping many many secrets, including her brother and secret lover. Although a bit predictable, I was dissapointed they used the same time travel method to reveal the killer in the end. I mean... why go through all the trouble sleuthing if you can just travel back in time?? haha....

I had to wait too long to read this sequel of “Jonas”, but when I finally did, I couldn't be happier.

Maguire's writing style is one of my favorites, and I enjoyed every sentence I read. The character's personalities are realistic and you can get to either like or dislike them. But what I love the most is that the protagonist, Darina, is genuine and not at all the typical heroine in every paranormal novel for young adults. I decided to read this book because of how much I enjoyed the first book however for me the book took me a while to get back interested in. I am glad I carried on reading the book though as by the end of the book for me it was just as good as the first one. Kniha ma veľmi príjemne prekvapila. Tak ako pri 1. dieli, páčil sa mi námet. Krásni mŕtvi sú niečo ako upíri, duchovia. anjeli a zombíci dokopy. Darina, pomáha tentoraz Arizone odhaliť všetky záhady jej smrti. Je to však omnoho ťažšie, pretože Arizona veľa zamlčí a klame. Jej rodina je takisto dosť komplikovaná a záhadná.

Poté co Darina vyřešila záhadu ohledně Jonasovy vraždy, se musí hned pustit do další, aby mohla být se svým milovaným Phoenixem. Ale jakoby objasnění vraždy nebylo už tak těžké, Darina musí řešit vraždu Arizony. Mohla by spočítat na prstech jedné ruky co o ní ví. Ale i přesto že Arizona je krásná, soběstačná, uzavřená...je mrtvá. A to z ní dělá "Darininu klientku" (to se mi líbí :D) A jak že vlastně zemřela? Utopila se v Hartmanově jezeře. Tím se stala Krásnou mrtvou, a dostala rok na to, aby zjistila jak zemřela a unikla věčnému zatracení v limbu. Problém je v tom, že Arizona ani nikdo jiný si nikdo ze své smrti nic nepamatuje. A tak je to všechno vlastně na Darině. S Jonasem to bylo lehčí, protože to byl její kamarád, ale s Arizonou se v lásce moc nemají. A navíc je to mnohem těžší, když si Arizona nechává spoustu věcí pro sebe-spoustu důležitých věcí.

Konečně! Arizona! Podle stejné osnovy...

Na druhý díl jsem se těšila hodně. O hodně víc než na první, protože Arizonu jsem si oblíbila už v jedničce. Je to jeden z těch světlých bodů příběhu. Měla jsem takové tušení, že Arizonin příběh bude nejlepší z celé série. I když jsme zatím další dva díly nečetla, pořád si to myslím. Jenom je mi strašně líto, že se autorka držela naprosto stejné osnovy jako v prvním díle. Když jsem dočetla tak jsem si říkala WTF? Jestli bude celá série na jedno brdo tak to potěš.... Začne to ufňukanou Darinou, která musí být se svým milovaným. Jde za Krásnými mrtvými kde je jí přidělen jeden zombie středoškolák. Snaží se vyřešit záhadu, stihne to tak tak a pak odejde ruku v ruce s Phoenixem do západu slunce. Dokonce i to jak se to vyřešilo!

Na konci se vrátili v čase k oné "nehodě". Zjistili že to byla vražda. Fine. Vrátili se zpátky. Rozčilený magor (v tomto případě Arizonin přítel) zabije jejího vraha. Co vám to připomíná? PRVNÍ DÍL! Jasně chápu že návrat v čase je strašně bolestivý, ale stejně to zase udělali, tak nechápu proč to nechali na poslední chvíli a neudělali to hned na začátku?

Jestli takhle skončí i další dva díly, tak se máme opravdu na co těšit (vidíte ten sarkasmus?)
Slovo závěrem
Vím, že jsem to říkala, ale Darina prostě není jedna z mých top hrdinek. Naopak jsem si velice oblíbila Arizonina mladšího brášku Ravena. Dokážu si to chuďátko živě představit. Vůbec by mi nevadilo, kdyby tam bylo víc scén s Ravenem a méně Dariny s Phoenixem. No tak! Ta holka by si měla konečně uvědomit že její kluk je mrtvá! Haló! Země volá Darinu! Prober se! Zajímalo by mě, co bude dělat až vyřeší Phoenixovu vraždu? Až odejde-a tentokrát už natrvalo. No ale to asi uvidíme v posledním díle, teď jde o druhý. Ale tahle kniha se četla velmi dobře, protože překlad byl skvělý! Vzhledem k malému počtu stránek se kniha, ba co celá série četla velmi rychle, já jsem zatím každý díl četla jeden den. Dala bych i čtyři hvězdičky-vážně! Darina mi opravdu vadí, ale Arizona to tak nějak kompenzovala. Ale to že je to "na jedno brdo" jako první díl, mi vadí mnohem víc. Série je pro mě takový průměr, a to hlavně díky detektivní zápletce, a některým vedlejším postavám. Jsem strašně zvědavá na třetí díl, hlavně protože mě zajímá, jestli se autorka odváže a vymyslí jiný konec ;)

The Beautiful Dead series is always fun to read. I enjoy Darina’s path to solving the mystery between the deaths of the Beautiful Dead. Hlavní hrdinkou série je Darina, jejíž přítel Phoenix před nedávnem zemřel a jak už víme z prvního dílu, byla to právě Darina, která přišla na to, že existují Krásní mrtví a že Phoenix k nim patří. Zatímco v prvním díle jsme se dozvěděli, jak zemřel Jonas, tentokrát na nás čeká příběh Arizony.

A je to právě Darina, kdo musí zjistit, jestli šlo vážně o sebevraždu... nebo za Arizoninou smrtí stojí někdo jiný. Horší ovšem je, že Arizona není zrovna sdílná osoba a tají toho mnohem víc, než se zprvu zdá.

Překladově mi kniha přišla o chlup lepší než předchozí díl. Buď je to tím, že jsem jazyku knihy přivykla, anebo se v textu vyskytuje mnohem míň výrazových hloupostí. Tak ajko tak mi kniha přišla i díky českému překladu čtivější.

Ze začátku jsem měla trochu problém se do příběhu vůbec dostat. Darina nepatří mezi mé oblíbené postavy. Je to nejspíš dáno tím, že je série dle mého spíše určená mladším ročníkům, které nebudou rozebírat to a tamto a prostě se nechají unášet příběhem. Prospěla mi menší pauza ve čtení, protože pak jsem si knihu dokázala užít víc. Zajímalo mě, co se Arizoně vlastně stalo a místy mě i její příběh dojímal.

Děj se kromě Dariny a Arizony také točí okolo mrtvého Phoenixe, který se vždycky objeví na scéně, aby se s Darinou pomuchloval. Na mrtvého chlápka docela dobré, nemyslíte? Trochu mě mrzí, že díky tomu se Darina nikdy z myšlenek na něho nevyhrabe. Přece jenom je Phoenix mrtvý a za rok odejde navždy. Mám obavy z toho, co bude dělat Darina potom.

Tahle série mi hodně připomíná typické epizody seriálu Odložené případy. Na začátku zjistíte, že někdo umřel. Pak se celou knihu snažíte zjistit, jak vlastně umřel a proč. Na konci všechno rozuzlíte, zjistíte, že je to jinak, než jste si mysleli a ještě navíc si k tomu i pobrečíte, protože některé smrti prostě nejsou fér.

Druhý díl byl zajímavější než ten první a jsem si jistá, že si najde své čtenáře. Pokud hledáte něco lehkého s detektivním prvkem, je tahle kniha právě pro vás. Knize dávám 3 hvězdičky jsem zvědavá, co si na mě Eden připraví v pokračování u Summer a co potom u Phoenixe.(less)

BEAUTIFUL DEAD: ARIZONA, by Eden Maguire left me speechless and begging for more. Arizona was the second teenager of four to die from Ellerton, but was her death really a suicide? Parece que la autora recibió mejores consejos y fue capaz de quitar todo ese empalagoseo y aire atormentado que se traía Darina en la primera parte. Cuando Darina empieza a averiguar cosas sobre Arizona se da cuenta de que no es lo que parece ser. Detrás de esa chica distante hay una joven dedicada a un hermano pequeño autista y también una chica enamorada, quizás del chico equivocado. Las cosas para Darina no están fáciles porque una sospecha se cierne sobre el pueblo y parece que todos están asustados, sobre todo por lo que cuentan que sucede en la cresta, y su madre no parece dispuesta a seguir dejando que Darina campe a sus anchas. Pronto las sospechas recaen sobre una persona y no van a parar hasta saber qué sucedió el día que murió Arizona. La muerte de Arizona sorprende más que la de Jonas, que parecía estar bastante clara desde la mitad del libro. Sin embargo, hasta el último momento no sabemos qué sucedió realmente con Arizona, quien, quizás, después de todo podría haber decidido adentrarse en el lago en el que murió. De todos modos, se ve que el cuerpo policial del sitio no es muy... ¿efectivo? porque el tatuaje de alas de Arizona estaba en la nuca, y eso no tiene sentido cuando has muerto ahogado.
Darina en esta ocasión no es tan insoportable como en la primera entrega –gracias, Eden, gracias–, pero de nuevo, el supuesto protagonista masculino es un adorno para alegrar los días de Darina, aunque aparecerán los celos porque llega un nuevo chico a las Almas Elegidas. Arizona, por su parte, es un personaje interesante y complejo, su actitud fría resulta ser una fachada que esconde una chica que vive en un hogar algo problemático y tiene que lidiar con lo que es tener un hermano autista. Hunter resulta interesante y enigmático, y parece tener alguna especie de fijación con Darina, lo cual pone la cosa interesante.
En esta ocasión, la narración es mucho más atractiva y adictiva, se podría decir que Maguire ha aprendido y se ha debido aconsejar bien, porque elimina todos esos elementos que hacían de Jonas un libro flojo y ha convertido Arizona en una novela que no es una maravilla pero es muy agradable de leer y que deja más claras ciertos conceptos que rodean al universo de Cuatro Almas. De todos modos, hay fallos bastante gordos que la autora ha tratado de solventar, pero que poco podía hacer ya habiéndola cagado en el primer libro.
Si te gustó Jonas, Arizona es imprescindible. La mejoría es notable en todos los sentidos y yo, personalmente tengo muchísimas ganas de leer el tercer libro y de descubrir quién es realmente Hunter y por qué existen las Almas Elegidas. Algo diferente y fresco que espero que mejore con cada libro.(less)

Den zweiten Teil der Beautiful Dead Reihe habe ich mir nur gegeben, weil ich ihn schon gekauft hatte bevor ich den ersten Band gelesen habe.
Nach 50 Seiten habe ich mich gefragt "warum?". Die Charaktere sind so unglaublich eindimensional, dass sie mir komplett egal waren. Ich weiß nichts über Darina, außer, dass sie Phoenix liebt. This was a great second installment in the Beautiful Dead series. It was filled with new plot twists and I discovered a lot more about certain characters.

Considering this novel focused on Arizona, it was great to be able to read more about her history. There was so much going on in her life that I didn't know about, and it really made me understand and like her more. I really enjoyed the second installment in the Beautiful Dead series. It took a while for the action to get started in book 1 as the author had to explain the world & introduce the characters. As that has already been done this story was able to jump straight into the thick of things. I would recommend reading this series in order although as each book concentrates mainly on solving the mystery surrounding one of the Beautiful Dead I suppose you could read them as stand alone books.

I fell right back in love with the world of the Beautiful Dead as soon I started reading Arizona – I’ve seen them described elsewhere like zombies (really?) I see them more like enhanced ghosts with special powers and wings and I still love the investigative angle the stories take.

This story is looking at the death of Arizona, someone who I didn’t feel very warm towards in the first book but oh my, their are some big reasons in there which explain why she felt she had to come across in that way...more
