I am a huge Charlotte Bronte fan, and this collection is just fantastic. Makes me smile over and over; I hardly even have to revisit the stories to relive them, Charlotte's storytelling makes such an impression that I feel as though I've lived them. The characters are extremely lifelike, the situations and emotions described so raw and intense that they're extremely difficult to forget. This collection is my favorite book that I own, by far.

Ugh...I have seriously fixed feelings about this book. I found the first part of Jane's life up to 18 years old to be very depressing and difficult to read about. I enjoyed her time at Thornfield with Mr. Rochester and it was highly entertaining. He is such a strange but intriguing character and I knew he was bad news! But alas, we never fall in love with the good guy, do we? The next part of the book where Jane flees Thornfield really made me angry. I disliked that part of the story. But of cou ...more

While many would like you to think that _Jane Eyre_ is the only novel by Charlotte Bronte, or the only one worth reading, that is extremely false. Her other novels: _The Professor_, _Shirley_, and above all _Vilette_ are all extremely moving and well written and worth reading. They have staying power. I recently read Joanna Russ's book _How To Supress Women's Writing_, in which she talks about how one of the things patriarchal acadamedia does in posterity is convince the public that a female aut ...more

Thought provoking read. How females of the 19th century survived is amazing. The contrast with the freedoms and luxuries women have now...hmm, I wonder, for example, what Charlotte would make of internet dating.. The religious/biblical references are so alien and deep, it is quite difficult to swallow and not give up reading the novel. Clearly unrequited love Char experienced and mirrored in this book.
