Magical tatoos are the thread that ties together four substantial short stories by popular urban fantasy authors Karen Chance, Marjorie Liu, Yasmine Galenorn and Eileen Wilks. These stories are just the quick 'fix' to tide us fans over while waiting for the next books in our favorite series but with a nice mix of story, suspense and even a bit of steam they are also great introductions to these authors' wonderful urban fantasy worlds.

Eileen Wilks' "Human Nature" is a short story that takes place in the Lupi world. A Lupus has been murdered and another lupus, Jason Chance, is being accused of the murder. Lily and Rule must travel home to San Diego to help solve this mystery. This is Jason's first appearance but his character plays a minor role in Wilks' next novel in the series, Blood Magic. - 5 stars

Inked is a a collection of four stories by four different authors. I'm only going to comment on two of the stories today as I'm not currently reading the other two authors yet. I read the first and the last stories in this book. The first is by Karen Chance and although it's not about Cassie Palmer it does take place in that world with those other characters and it's just as good as any of the Cassie books. It's about a female war mage who holds a shifter in her family tree but is not a shifter....more

Quick & Dirty: Four novellas featuring love and ink.
The Review:
This anthology contains four stories of love, loss, and tattoos that move, shift, kill, protect, empower and even turn into demons. If only my ink did any one of those things, well not kill, but still.
“Skin Deep” by Karen Chance

I really enjoyed the adventure of the mystery in following Lia in finding her boyfriend Cyrus. There is a connection between Lia and Cyrus she is not aware of until it appears for her. Lia, being a mage on light duty, has to find Cyrus - hiding in Tartarus the shifting underground Vegas - to see if he has a clue or... is he in trouble... since there are weres being killed at the very moment of changing - for their skins. Who ever is doing this has to be good, fore the ch...more

This is a set of four novella length stories that deal in some way with tattoos.
Skin Deep by Karen Chance - Every time I read a story about Lia I think I'd like to read about her in a series but it seems that so far she's destined only to appear in anthologies like these. For some reason, the Cassandra Palmer series never really did it for me. Anyway, it's a good story although the tattoo aspect seems tangential to the story.

I'm sort of torn about these anthologies that have "4.5" of this series, and 3.5 of another series. This anthology I don't mind, because I would buy an anthology for any one of three of the stories. (I just haven't gotten into Gaelorn.)This anthology I didn't mind, three excellent must buy authors, and one that was fine to pass the time. I'm glad, because sometimes I end up buying these for one story and feeling robbed. This was good value.

Four short novellas by four urban fantasy writers.
Wasn't a huge fan of the Karen Chance story. I already tried on her Cassie Palmer series and it wasn't a good fit for me, so I wasn't too surprised.
Eileen Wilks is like book-crack for me, and since I am a fan of her Lupi books, it wasn't a long shot that I would enjoy that story. Though I do think it was better for the fact that I have read the series and know the two main characters well.

*Inked by Karen Chance, Marjorie M. Liu, Yasmine Galenorn and Eileen Wilks. This book is also four stand-alone stories by four different authors.
-Skin Deep by Karen Chance is a little different from the others. The main character, Lia, is part Were part human. However, her story isn't that of an ongoing series. She has instead appeared in other collaboration books with other authors. However, I really liked her world, where mages, Weres, and other people and creatures exist. They use tattoos as...more

First things first: The blurbs at the back are EXTREMELY misleading. Don't base your expectations of the novella on them.
The anthology averaged 3 stars but let's spread it out...
Karen Chance: 5 stars. I love Lia de Croisset's stories and this one was well balanced (action and emotions). I re-read the ending several times.
Marjorie M. Liu: 2 stars. It was boring and heading nowhere and I developed a strong dislike of the heroine. The only reason it got 2 stars instead of one was the last page, whi...more

I have read 3 out of 4 so far and was surprised at how much I liked them. Previous novellas have been romance books in a futuristic setting. These were stories that had fascinating characters so much that I would like to read more but don't think there are full length novels . I am not a tattooed lady and would never get one if they behaved like the tats in Inked. I looked up the authors and realized I read a book by Karen Chance which I did not like as much as the short story. So a if I read he...more
Skin Deep - this was an interesting storyline. I would have liked the tattoo to have more to do with the storyline. I really liked the way the author tied the two lovers together via their mate bond.
Armor of roses - I felt like I was missing a huge part of the background to this story....it seemed to pick up from some earlier story and kept moving forward. Because of that it took me a little to get into the actual story and feel like I knew what was going on. Once there, I really liked the heroi...more

I read this book for the Marjorie Liu Hunter Kiss story and that alone was worth the read. Having another Eileen Wilks Lupi story with Lily and Rule made reading through the end worthwhile. The other stories by Karen Chance and Yasmine Galenorn had hot sex and the Chance story made me put Touch the Dark higher up on my TBR pile. The Galenorn story had very, very hot sex but a confusing story. The Liu story takes Maxine back in time to save the lives of four children but that's not the real reaso...more

Review:
Skin Deep by Karen Chance. Karen’s story once again features War Mage/were Lia (who is featured on the cover) and her werewolf love interest Cyrus. If you want to read all of the stories about these characters (and you should because they are fantastic) the reading order would be:
1. Rogue Elements (included in the Wolfsbane and Mistletoe anthology)
2. Vegas Odds (included in the Strange Brew anthology)
3. Skin Deep (included in the Inked anth...more

Nice collection of stories that introduce you to characters that are new to you or allow you to revisit old friends. Karen Chance's Skin Deep is a nicely detailed short story about war mages involved in the supernatural police force dealing with a serious problem among the Were population. Marjorie Liu's Hunter Kiss story is a complex ballet involving the "boys" (demon tattoos) taking an active role in her life. Eileen Wilks has an enthralling story involving a murder of one of the Nikolai wolve...more
This is an anthology but I must confess I focused primarily in Karen Chance's story. I'm sure the other stories are great too but I haven't read them. They are probably from major series and the only one of those I'm following is Cassie Palmer from Karen so no point reading the whole book until or if I decide to read the other authors main series. The story I did read was very good though. Totally new perspective. First time I read about weres in Cassie Palmer's universe. First time too that the...more
Skin deep by Karen Chance: I've liked it a lot (4). I don't like very much Cassandra's book but Lia de Crochet, yes, I do, I've read her story at "Strange brew" and I enjoyed a lot. I've to look for "Wolfbane and Mistletoes".
Armour of roses by Marjorie M. Liu: I've liked it, and I've finished with a little twitch in my guts (4). Perhaps I'll continue with the series.
Etched in silver by Yasmine Galenorn: I couldn't finish it. I don't know, I don't feel it right for me.

So I've discovered that unless you're really invested in a series and absolutely have to know every side detail, there's really no point in reading anthologies. It can be nice to get a feel for a certain author's writing style, but these just really aren't my thing.
I only picked this up for a book club challenge read, and I don't regret it, but probably won't be in any hurry to read another anthology for a while.

Pretty good anthology. I enjoyed 3 of the 4 stories.
Skin Deep by Karen Chance - I really enjoy the short stories of the war mage, Lia. If she ever gets her own book, I will definitely pick it up. Although I wouldn't mind seeing her and Cyrus together for more of the story.
Armor of Roses by Marjorie M. Liu - first I've read by this author. Premise was intriguing (with demons who live on the heroine and protect her from danger). This story was so-so for me, but intrigued me enough to put The Iron...more

So far, I've only read the Eileen Wilks "Human Nature" story. It takes place in her world of Lupi series with Rule and Lily. I like that this story is kind of behind-the-scenes showing what was going on with everyone else while Cynna and Cullen were stuck in Edge in Night Season. One of Rule's friend's is murdered and Lily and Rule have to go back to California to solve the case. It's a good short story, but I think it also did a good job of not being too involved in the current series storyline...more
Anthology with four stories from awesome authors, all linked with magical tattoos. Loved them all, old friends and new ones i want more from.
Karen Chance´s Skin Deep, Lia, half war mage, half werewolf, is tracking her mate Cyrus.
Marjorie Liu´s Armor of Roses, Maxine gets a call for help from herself and time travels to aid her grandmother.
Yasmine Galenorn´s Silver Etched, Camille is hunting a murderer and her boss is waiting for her to fail. Meeeting Trillian was steamy and i´m adding her book...more

The first short story in this book Skin Deep by Karen Chance I really liked. I have read her before but not this series. I found the characters a little bit hard to keep track of but that was ok. Most of the stories in this book you needed to have read the series. I liked Armour of Roses by Marjorie M. Liu as well but it was confusing as well as I hadnt read the series. So I will look for this series as I am interested in how the little demons she has came about. So if you have read these series...more
Good anthology! Karen Chance excels as usual - I adore her writing! 4 stars. Marjorie M Lui is new to me, but I'll definitely check into her. Well written and a good story! 3½ or 4 stars, too. As for Ms Galenorn, I'm less than impressed. The story's ok but feels a bit hap-hazard and uninspired. Plus - I don't really like explicit sex scenes that feel unnatural and tossed in there just-because. There's no tension. Just sex. Very un-erotic. 2 stars - and that's when I'm being generous. The last st...more

I am addicted to anthologies. With so many new and upcoming authors out there, and known authors I haven't tried yet, this is a perfect "taste" of the new, and a toe-dip into the 'somewhat known'.
"Skin Deep" is the first short story I ever read by Chance, and lead me to another anthology, "On The Prowl". Everyone else has told you the story line, so I will just say that the story was enjoyable, and was my first step to adding Chance to my 'must read' list. Will see how that goes.

Karen Chance is the author of two New York Times bestselling series, plus a number of novellas and short stories, all set in the Cassandra Palmer universe. A full-time writer since 2008, she was previously a university history teacher, which comes in handy when writing the time-travel aspect of Cassie’s crazy adventures. She loves Las Vegas, the main setting for her novels, but currently lives in...more
