I was unimpressed by this collection, even as, towards the end, I was drawn into the minihistory of Spanish colonialism and the stark first person accounts. While Doxology balanced the right measure of humor and contemplation, I found too many of the poems were an all too earnest wink and nod -- "See what I did there?"

I came to this book through this article:

And left it oddly disappointed. But because I can't articulate why, Powell's books are going to remain on my mental Geoffrey-Hillesque "keep rereading it until you either understand/appreciate it or you die, whichever comes first" shelf.
