Well, if Butterflies, Flowers taught me anything, it’s that I seriously need to stop taking the book suggestions of the teens at my library.

Because honestly.

Back story: the girl who recommended this series to me is fourteen. “You’ll LOVE IT,” she gushed to me, “it’s so romantic and funny and it’s only eight volumes so you can read it in an afternoon!!”

Y’all, I read the first volume, and I think I have to stop. The mental image of my little fourteen-year-old patron LOVING this series ma

So, I was looking up manga that had the word "flowers" or a type of flower in the title for the Manga Book Club "Garden Party" challenge. I found this series and luckily the library had it. Now, I won't lie, when I read the description, I was a little leary. It sounded a little bit too much like Fifty Shades of Shit, but as I've mentioned before, there isn't a lot of manga I won't give a shot at reading. I've read plenty of manga where after reading the synopsis I

I sat down expecting to only be mildly entertained and to be slightly irritated. I'm glad to say that this wasn't the case here.

Since this manga was released as a "mature" manga (not to mention being sold shrinkwrapped!), I was a bit surprised to see how much it resembled its more innocent kin. This is pretty much your typical "girl meets boy, they fall for each other, things conspire to keep them apart" type of read. The interactions between the two main characters are incredibly cute and the

This is the most interesting take on a love story. Well, maybe not the MOST interesting, but the A.D.D. of the romance is definitely original. The plot, while I can't say it's fantastic is pretty fun. There is "role reversal," but not in the way it's usually portrayed. The characters are also very fun and you feel like you're a part of their world.
This romance manga is different from others in the sense of it's not about supernatural beings and it's not in a high school setting. It's in the mode

i understand that Viz has a no porn rule, so i'm really pleased that they're skating closer to that by publishing this kind of cheerful smut (not that there's any in this volume, you have to wait for the next one). some reviews i read attempted to deal with the gender politics in the story, and usually coming up disapproving as a result, but it's clear this does not belong in the camp of realistic storytelling - it's strictly check your brain at the door. *this* is what aurora's luvluv line shou ...more

I wanted to revisit this series, as in the middle of re-reading a more serious jonsei manga, I wanted a bit of levity -

And that is what Yuki Yoshihara delivers. From the lush illustration on the cover of the book to the parody of it on the back, Yoshihara weaves romance with humor (flat out hilarious facial expressions) and an endearingly plain and somewhat incompetent lead. The first time I read this, I chuckled a little, but there wasn't much else notable about it that made me want to finish

Review for the whole series with slight spoilers!

Josei manga, which is meant for young women, doesn’t get translated as much as shoujo that is directed more towards younger girls. This is from one side a shame, because josei romance titles are obviously quite a bit different from shoujo romance, plus they are heaps more mature and appropriate for reading to older girls who enjoy manga, but are tired of the unescapable juvenileness that shoujo provides (which isn’t a bad or a wrong thing,

The part of me that *adores* K-dramas found BUTTERFLIES, FLOWERS delightful and entertaining in sexy-but-still-sweet way. The third-wave feminist in me spent several pages going, "Whoa, they did *not* just say that." Still, rather cute Josei (not really Shojo as the main character is already in the workforce.)

This manga series reminds me of Maki Enjoji's Hapi Mari (Happy Marriage) series. A definite appeal for those shojo readers wanting something beyound the high school stories. An overall adorable romance. I will definetly read it again. It has some minor grammer errors but nothing that pulls away from the story.

This is the first Manga that made me understand the M rating. It was a good story with characters that made you want to find out what happens next. I am beginning to see a pattern in the romance Manga genre, but this one is also so funny that I was up all night reading as many of the series as I could get.

The humor is fantastic, a little raunchy at times. The romance is a bit of a roller coaster hot/cold but it makes the hero seem more vulnerable and insecure, which makes him sympathetic, and so I don't mind it as much.

Great art, and it's actually funnier at times than I expected it to be. Only, at the same time, I feel slightly ashamed for having enjoyed this. The main guy character is like...insane--part total A-hole, part servile weirdo, part sleazy manipulator. I can't quite figure him out, and I also can't quite figure out how on earth, with this horrible combination of personalities, the main female character has managed to fall in love with him. I think I'm mainly in it for Masayuki's cross-dressing bes ...more

Great illustrations that don't distract from the story; a believable, yet uncommon premise; sweet and humorous. This is a pretty charming and fun manga. I'm also enjoying that the characters aren't perfect. Yuki Yoshihara does a great job of showcasing both strengths and weaknesses without turning them into ridiculous caricatures.

So this is a weird little book! Basically the romantic leads veer between two particular shoujo dynamics: the dominating douche/hapless girl and aristocratic lady/devoted servant. I'm about a million times more into the latter than the former so I hope it settles on that one! I would also highly appreciate it if at some point she makes him wash out his mouth with soap because what the fudge. You don't ask a woman if she's a virgin in her job interview. It's sexual harassment, it's gross, I vote ...more

A graphic novel I started reading due to some positive reviews, I found myself for the most part a bit underwhelmed. Although not bad, this story seems to have a hard time performing a balancing act between trying to be a romance and trying to be a comedy. Of course, the normal answer is to just make this a 'romantic comedy', but the feeling I get is that this is intentionally sequestered, and thus becomes a lesser of the sum of its parts. Still, again, it's not bad, and is enough to gives this ...more

This contains plenty of the stereotypical elements I expect from manga: virgin shaming, ridiculous formality, manic depressive mood swings, and crossdressers. The artwork is very cute and the story is entertaining.

Ultimately, I'm not the target reader for this manga. I don't get much out of dom/sub stories, but I will say that this one was a lot better than most I've come across.

The drawings feel minimalistic compared to some of the manga I've read, and I like stronger female characters. Kuze does show some potential to be a stronger character, so I'm curious to see how the master/servant boss/employee relationships work out.
