Abandoned (Smoky Barrett #4)
For FBI Special Agent Smoky Barrett, her colleague’s wedding is cause for celebration. Until a woman staggers down the aisle—incoherent, wearing only a white nightgown. A fingerprint check determines that she’s been missing for nearly eight years. Her coldly efficient captor toyed with her mind and body, imprisoning her, depriving her of any contact with the outside world....more

Abandoned, by Cody McFadyen, b-plus, narrated by Joyce Bean, produced by Brilliance Audio, downloaded from audible.com.
This is part of the FBI Special Agent Smoky Barrett series. The wedding of one of their own was cause for celebration. Until a woman staggered down the aisle, incoherent, emaciated, head shaved, and wearing only a white nightgown. No one knows who she is or where she's come from - or why she's chosen to appear in a church filled with
law enforcement agents. The...more

Smoky Barrett is a tiny four-foot-ten with a huge nasty scar on her face from an attack a few years before as a consequence of her job. For the past 12 years she has headed up a team of four, including herself, at the NCAVC (National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime) based in Quantico, Virginia. They’re a special group called out to deal with the worst of the worst of the human race: child murderers, molesters, rapists and the like.

Thank you Deb for recommending this book. Though the 4th installment in an ongoing series, this is the first book I have read by this author. That said, the book is very much a "stand alone" ~I didn't feel like I was missing vital pieces of information. At the end of the book I find myself wanting to know more about the previous terrors of Smoky's life, so it will be back to the beginning of this series for me!

I heartily dislike McFadyen's style of writing as well as his characters. I had previously read another book featuring the same protagonist and found her irritating as heck. The plot and the hunt for the killer was good, but the ending was a fail.
Strangely enough, I most liked James (an antisocial member of Smoky's team), Alan (another member of her team) and one of the minor antagonists (whose name I can't recall atm). Smoky herself seems a little sex-crazed, over-dramatized, and.....more

Boo..this book took way too much time to be so bad at the end..I was actually amused at the start of this book which reads like a Criminal Minds episode with characters similar almost exactly to the show..For starters they work in Quantico Virginia in the BAU (Behavioral Analysis Unit) dissecting the minds and motives of serial killers. The main character Smokey is definitely Hodges from the show and there is a black guy (Shemar Moore's character) and a nerdy antisocial dude (my darling genius S...more
I worry about myself a little bit, enjoying a book this much when it has such evil in it - but I think I've worried similarly here on Goodreads in the past, so I won't go on about it.
I found this compelling reading. I like the way Smoky Barrett (the protagonist) shows an acceptance of people's differences. For example, she is friends with a hired assassin, even though she would never be that herself. I'm reminded of a friendship I had many years ago with a man who had been a merce...more

This book honestly attracted my full attention from the first couple of chapters. Suspenseful, enticing, grasping, all elements that make up a good thriller. I guess what made me so attracted to the book, never letting it go, is because of the life lessons it contains. Certain characters have been taught to believe different things. But the main objective that came up again and again was that everybody "goes back to the dirt". You live a life, then die, u go underground. there is no es...more
Cody has done it again. In this latest installment, Smoky Barrett has met the most disturbing serial killer yet. Reminiscent of the show Criminal Minds, Smoky and her team are FBI profilers. This is the fourth book with this set of characters, and they all are portrayed amazingly. I can't tell you how much I love this cast of characters. The side characters are more so three dimensional as well. (I'll just say that I'm a huge fan of one of the side characters in this book, and I'm now somewhat p...more
I wanted to download some books onto my Kindle and so I just looked for the first book that was available from the library and it was this one. I knew from the first page that I should not read it, but did I send it back? No, I kept going, skipping pages and skimming for something to read that was not going to frighten, disgust, or embarrass me to read, just to see if they get the bad person. Lots of language and not just your garden variety language some real nasty stuff. Lots of sex and se...more

As this book opens we see a side of Smoky we don't see all that often, she is relaxed and happy while on vacation. It is great to get this glimpse into her like this because as always in these books all hell breaks loose and her life goes to shit fast.
At the end of Callie's wedding a women is thrown out of car, the wedding festivities coming to an end real fast. Once they have the woman at the hospital getting care no one who was there can walk away before they ferret out her story...more

Ein gutes Buch, die Storyline fesselt und zieht sich auch nicht.

This book was outrageously good. Out of all the Smoky books, this was possibly the most disturbing one. The person that Smoky is chasing is unbelievably demented, and the things that were done to the victims are unfathomable.
It was a dark, twisted tale that showed that every person has a dark side to them. And what that dark side is truly capable of is astounding. Yet, despite the dark overturns of the book, there was still the opportunity for hope and survival. Smoky is a woman tha...more

This is the 4th in the Smoky Barrett series and as good as the previous 3. Very good, shocking and edge of the seat reading.
Back Cover Blurb:
The woman had been missing for almost eight years.
Someone watched her, stalked her, kidnapped her, and held her captive in the dark all that time. No ransom demand. No suspects. No answers, even now that the woman has been found - alive but unbearably traumatised.

If you like being scared...read this book. And no..for once, I'm not reading about vampires. The "real stuff" scares me...this could happen, so that's why it scared me so... Great Book!!!! Best of the series..
I've not been able to put this book down....it's SO creepy and good. You really should read the first three Smoky books before this one, but you really don't have to. This is McFadyen's BEST one yet!

Absolutely cringe-worthy thriller. I don't know how this author does it, but he manages to curl my toes more and more with each novel. Another case for Smokey and her cracklin FBI team of serial killer profilers.
This one takes us where no one should ever have to go even reading it, will make you squirm guaranteed.

3/5 stars.
At times, reading this felt like I was reading a text book, and not a serial killer thriller. I've read A LOT of books surrounding seriel killers, and I understand Cody McFadyen's attempt to change the reasoning behind serial killing, but this just didn't do it for me. Everything was too laid out and even, the characters didn't have to struggle for anything, not even when Smoky gets a taste of what her victims went through. I sort of did find the whole "I hate my wife,...more

Book 4 in the Smoky Barrett series.
And again a very good book. I love this author, he doesnt fail to deliver with a good book.
Story starts with one of the main character's wedding, and a woman being dumped out in the middle of it, which is the start of the teams new case.
Smoky is a very likeable character and easily relatable (if you forget about her job and her previous experience with bad guys). If you have read the previous books then you know her story and...more

It worries me a bit when someone writes a book like this. Where did the idea come from? How can anyone come up with such a gruesome tale? Are people really this evil? FBI agent Smokey Barrett deals with serial killers. She knows how to get inside their heads, but usually with consequences that affect her family and place her in peril. This time, Smokey’s killer is stalking on the Internet. Evil breads evil and that is proven in this novel. Not for the faint of heart, but a good read.
The decent has gone predictable. One of the things I enjoyed about McFadyen's original book was that it wasn't entirely predictable. Not so much anymore. Book #3 was pretty predictable and early on in this book I didn't think it would be quite as predictable, but I was wrong.
Totally predictable. Every. Single. Plot. Twist. After you've read at least one of his books, you won't be particularly surprised.

The 4th in a series (I haven't read any of the others) about a FBI agent who hunts down serial killers and such. Has had personal experience with one who touched her life in a really bad way, and this motivates her. Clever, tightly written. Amazing that a male author can write so convincingly about a female lead character. I'm not a thriller reader by nature, but this one wouldn't let me stop. A bit gory but not in a totally disgusting way. I'm thinking about reading the first one.
Cody McFayden successfully created a story with twists and turns. The plot was simple, yet it was able to grasp a hold of the reader's attention. Throughout the story, the reader wouldn't have been able to predicted the ending.
Through this book, McFaydn conveyed emotions and philosophies that are realistic. In some ways, this thriller is probably for an older audience. There were many military terms I didn't understand. However, the psychology thinking behind the plot is remarkable. ...more

This was the first book I read from Cody McFadyen, I dont think I will seeking more from him... The story and plot itself was good, all the babble and the PUH-LEEEEEESES, AND HONEY LOVE THIS AND HONEY LOVE THAT, was so annoying though out this whole book. No women is going to call another women Honey Love everytime she speaks to this person. And one other thing that I couldnt get my brain around was that when Callie spoke, she was purring.. I know that confused the hell out me too. Take out all...more
Smoky Barrett, what else can I say. An excellent read, awesome well rounded characters with a sensational story. I am usually more of a true crime/abnormal psychology reader but these series of books are a must read for crime/thriller insomniacs. Beware once you start this read you wont put it down, and if you do you will be picking it up as soon as you wake up in the morning. I would also definately say that the Smoky Barrett series is also on of the only series of these type of books where I h...more
Another sit on the edge of your chair! Smokey is back again with her team searching for the latest serial killer. I love the communication between Smokey and her team that draws you in as they disect the options, evidence and gut feelings they have in solving their cases. Can't recommend this author enough if you have a strong stomach for descriptions of how the victims are found. If you are going to read any of his books, start with the first one.
I picked this book up on the new shelf of the library not realizing that it is the 4th in a series about a beautiful and courageous scarred senior FBI agent and they call her Smokey. I almost laid it down because right from the start it was a lot "darker" thriller that I like to read. I immediately liked Cody Macfayen's writing style and continued on to read it in two days. Anyone who loves really good scary thrillers I recommend this book.
This is the first book I've read featuring Smoky Barrett, an FBI agent with a tragic past. It's a solid thriller. Smoky is a very likeable heroine who survived a horrific incident in a previous book. And although a serial killer that doesn't fit the usual profile is interesting, Chelsea Cain does this literary trick much better. Two things about Abandoned really stand out to me:

Love Cody McFadyen. There's always a certain element of chill in his books, the way he describes the mind of each depraved killer. That coldness is much stronger in this 4th book, the detachment of the killer grips me. In my opinion, it's his best book to-date. As with all his books, i read it non-stop from the first page to the last. It's an awesome book, though rather disturbing at times.
Looking forward to his next.
