In this fifth book in the series, we are introduced to a con-man who hustles blackjack, we learn more about FBI Agent Nitz, there's background on Diesel's troubled childhood, and Bad Horse's heroin addiction gets worse as he's roped into a heist to save Red Crow discovering that he's an undercover FBI Agent. And the killer of Gina Bad Horse is revealed.

There's a lot going on in "High Lonesome" and it's definitely the best in the series so far with revelations and action comi More...

Here the plot doesn't move forward: mostly flashbacks and backstories of the nastiest characters we've seen trying to slit each other's throats (plus one new, shrewdly drawn trickster). But wow, the hero we once loved has fallen straight into hell, and the blond bully we still hate gets a squalid, tearjerker origin story. I'm still astounded by how this series keeps pushing the noir-crime boundary forward, past sun-drenched Indian territory into a new midnight of crushed seventies idealism, pri More...

Jason Aaron continues to blow me away with this book. It is one of the most enjoyable stories I have ever read, populated by characters that I hate or pity or fear. It is the proverbial train wreck that I can’t stop watching. Everyone here is wretched, addicted, disgusting, evil. We are watching them destroy themselves and each other. We are compelled by this story, drawn into this world of horrible crimes. And there is no stylish or romanticized violence. It’s brutal. There’s nothing coo More...

High Lonesome didn't grip me the way the last two volumes did, but I still enjoyed it. It continues the trend of telling the backstories of unpleasant characters. Mostly, that has worked to leave me surprisingly sympathetic toward people I didn't like at all before. I like that a lot. It's one of my favorite things in a story. In High Lonesome, Aaron succeeded in engendering that sympathy in me for Diesel, but not so much for Nitz. I still don't like him or understand him. In any case, you can't More...

What can I say, I absolutely love this story, and I love the way it is told. The writing is so good it supports much of the sub par guest artwork. That would be my only criticism, R.M. Guera's art is so superb in every way, I think he should do all the art work, even if it takes longer for it to come out, or the editors should make damn sure the substitute artist is up to the task. That said, this is one of the best reads in mature comics right now.

I thought the last volume was depressing, but damn - High Lonesome is a story that can get to you.

This volume takes an incredible look into the inner psyches of several major characters and introduces one of the most interesting con men that I've seen in a crime story in some time.

I also love that (vague spoiler) even at his lowest, Dashiell can still pull his shit together long enough to show just how brilliant he can be.

Good times.

Easily rates a "five." After having read five of these trade paperbacks, I feel like there's actually a Prairie Rose Indian Reservation, and it's populated by Lincoln Red Crow and Dashiell Bad Horse, among others.

Tenser, nastier, more complex with every volume. Red herrings which aren't, heroes off the pasth, some serious violence, and a long-awaited look into the heads of Nitz and Diesel. Doesn't get better than this.

YOU MAY BE GONE, GINA, BUT A BAD HORSE STILL HAS TO LEAD THE WAY IF THIS REZ IS EVER GONNA MAKE IT OUTTA THIS DARKNESS. I PROMISE I'LL DO ALL I CAN FOR HIM.

Scalped continues to be the best ongoing there is right now, as far as I'm concerned. I love everything about it.

This is it, has everything come to a head and Bad horse needs to tell someone so he can get out?

Only a 3 cause only one chapter really pushes the global story along.

As I wrote before, this series is almost flawless. Jason Aaron has no boundaries of thought, which in the case of the "Scalped" series happens to be the best thing anyone could ask for. A brilliant series about a modern day Indian Reservation, the murder, sex, drugs, casinos and the struggle of its citizens just to scrape by will leave you both exhausted and dying for more.

That was some of the most compelling storytelling I've read in *long* while. Why can't all graphic novels be that good? Wow, at this rate Aaron's going to ruin me for 90% of the decent authors out there.

Considerably less eventful than the previous entries, but still some great character insight.
