I know there are a lot of ghost story concepts in manga, there are so many I can't even begin to count. The idea of the soul is always incredibly interesting and here it's used to a fantastical end. However, I watched a good portion of the anime before reading this first volume and that without a doubt affected my experience.

The anime is beat for beat the same as the manga. That meant the Soul Eater I was first introduced to was different, with vibrate colour and great character voices, and yet...more

I haven`t read the series but so far what I had read on the reviews the mania is way different then watching it on the screen. Take a hint and watch the series on the screen. You ever watch a movie but you have read the book before watching the movie. Like Harry Potter or Twilight and in the end you have rip apart the movies because they aren`t base on the books all the way. Well this is oppose so the book ruin what have been done on the amine. So to save sometime try to watch it then reading it...more

There is a school called Death Weapon Meister Academy, or the DWMA for short. This school is run by a shinigami, or otherwise known as death. This school trains humans who have the ability to transform into weapons, and as well as the ones who wields those weapons, called meisters. These meisters objective is to have their weapon defeat and then devour 99 evil human souls and one witch in order for it to turn into a death scythe. Maka and her partner Soul, just finished collecting 99 evil human...more

Soul Eater, the first book in the series I thought was really good. I really enjoyed it.

The setting behind it is these 3 people go to an academy (Death’s Academy) to try and become his death weapon. So the three students are weapon meisters that have a partner which is a weapon. We have Black Star, the “clumsy” assassin with his weapon as a smoke bomb, ninja star, or a type of bladed nun chuck on chains. You have Death’s son which has 2 weapons that are pistols and he is all about symmetry you w...more

I wasn't really sure what to expect when I picked up this book. The book turned out to better than my low expectations. The plot follows several kids who are training their weapons (who are also living) to reach their various goals. There's Maka and Soul eater. Maka wants to make Soul a powerful Death Scythe stronger than her Death Scythe father to get back at him for cheating on his mother (her father, might I add frequents clubs). Black Star is an assassin and I' m not entirely sure what he a...more

All right!!!! I AM BLACK STAR!!!!.And I am the BIG MAN whose doing this reveiw of Soul Eater Volume 1.

Just kidding but glad I have your attention now.

This book was surprising to say the least. From the look of it you would not expect an engaging, multifaceted, and original concept. But that is what you get! Also it looks like its written for kids. Found it in the Adult section next to HOTD (High School of the Dead)
and although it could be enjoyed by children I'm sure it has enough adult elemen...more

This is a book talking about some kids in an academy. In the academy they are learning to master death weapons. An example of a death weapon is the popular scythe. They may also be considered shinigamis. Shinigami is a japanese word. This word means death god. Also in the academy if they are not able to control the shinigame weapon they can control human weapons. Some example of human weapons are guns. The main goal of the academy is to kill 99 bad souls and 1 witch soul. They need to kill all t...more

At first, I wasn't so sure about this manga because I didn't expect so much action and so little plot. But when I began to view it more for what it is (a high-action-based manga with a more simplistic plot) I began to thoroughly enjoy it more. While I like it a LOT however, I'm probably not going to immediately jump to buy it. I'll wait until I've read more into it before I decide, but it is warming up to me.
In terms of plot, there isn't much although the feel of it's-the-journey-not-the-destina...more

Okay I know I might be a bit harsh since this is the first volume but...
- This manga is boring. The plot was predictable that I can literally skim through the dialogues.
- The art itself doesn't completely fit my type.
- It is geared for older teen but I still think it is not necessary to show so much sexual content. Wow, does Atsushi thinks putting tons of panties, and boobies here and there will make the manga better? -______-
- The characters were alright but some were typical. Maka and Soul Ea...more

When Gary Oldman is pissed off with you, you'd best run for your life, you perverse little bitch.

If you want to hear me call Ohkubo out for the paedophilic tripe he has created, just follow the yellow brick road.

EVERYTHING I EVER WRITE IS A SPOILER:
i loved this! it was suggested to me by a friend and the artwork was really beautiful and interesting.
i was confused at first. every chapter had different characters in it, and they did activities that did not corelate, except they were all hunting souls.
but i finally understood at the end what they had to do with each other in a way that made me go drive to my nearest barnes and nobles immediately and buy the next two.
i love each of the characters. they aren...more

I was dissappointed about this book for manny reasons. I watched the amine before I read the book.

First of all the characters looked and acted a bit different from the amine. I really liked the way they were before, and I felt thier look was portraying thier personalities.

Second of all they left out good scenes from the anime out of the book. They had a really cool fight scene from the vary beginning but when you open the book the fight was just a single swish from a sythe. I enjoyed that fight...more

Yawn. Soul Eater, Volume 1 starts off with an interesting premise, but quickly deteriorates into a ho-hum screaming match between bratty weapon meisters and their subpar living scythes. The characters are unlikable and are quite grating on the nerves. The only character of any interest had, oh, about five seconds of face time, so there was nothing to keep me connected to the story.

I can appreciate boobalicious girls in my manga, but I felt the pointless sexually gratuitous conte...more

Art: 3/5 At this point in the series, Ohkubo has a very generic art style that's not very unique, however he makes up for it with interesting details and crazy characters that I personally find believable because each one has flaws. There is a lack of background/setting detail.

Story: 3/5 not much goes on in the first volume other than some crazy fan service, shenanigans and comedy. There's a lot more ecchi in the manga than the anime.

Characters: 4/5 I really love all the characters. And Maka is...more

Soul Eater and Maka work together in order to rid the evil of their world, collecting their souls and eating them in order to upgrade. They need 100 evil souls and 1 witch's soul in order to become a Death Sythe. They also meet up with their assassin friends Black Star and Tsubaki. Death(or Shinigami) is the maker of the school that rids the evil souls, and Soul and Maka also ahve a chance to meet his son Death the Kid(aka Kid) and his ladies Patty and Liz. There is a twist with everyone's pairi...more

It's definitely a good thing that I actually read some of the later volumes of this series first because, just based on this volume alone, I would not be continuing with the series.

The best thing about this series by far is the originality in the design of the characters and their world. I've never seen anything quite like it in manga and look forward to seeing more.

However, this volume does not have the most consistent art, has way too much fanservice, and is filled with characters who are quit...more

In a school for shinigami, weapons meisters learn how to capture the souls of evil people and witches. Maka and Soul Eater are two of the students, who mistakenly harvest the soul of a cat and have to start over.

Well, I finally started this series. I like the Halloween-themed art style. It reminds me of "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and other Tim Burton movies. I also like some of the characters.

What I didn't like was the overabundance of sexual and body humor. I'm not a prude, but the fan-se...more

A couple of my friends told me that they had tried to read this years ago, but just couldn't do it. At the time they'd told me this, I'd just finished (and loved) the anime, and I couldn't really understand why the art style was bothering at least one of my friends.

I have to admit, if I hadn't watched at least four episodes of the anime beforehand, I wouldn't have felt really pressed to finish off the first two chapters of this story, because there is a decent amount of fanservice in the first o...more

Soul Eater is what I might say one of the better manga's out there today. Mainly character driven I found it very easy to get emotionally concerned for the characters. It takes place in an odd rendering of several places, mainly the fictional city of Death City Nevada. The plot has plenty of twist and turns to keep someone interesting. Unlike some other books I could mention there is actual character growth.
Though it is rather dark at times it isn't too bad. There is blood but not enough to mak...more

A sound soul..dwells within a sound mind..and a sound body. That's all you need to get into the Demon Weapons and Meisters Academy, the DWMA for short. Here at this academy you must fight these evil humans called kishins, the goal is the meister and the weapon must work together and fight these kishins and when you defeat the kishin, your weapon must eat their soul. Don't worry the weapons transform into people and then back into weapons; you must collect 99 kishin souls and 1 witch soul once they...more

I picked up this volume because I'd seen clips on youtube about Death the Kid as well as some kickass fanart, and after I learned a bit about his personality I wanted to check him out. He has his own prologue in Volume 1 and it's a lot of fun to watch him gush over things that are symmetrical and flip his wig over things that are not (including his own appearance).

But he's not the main character and I haven't decided whether I like the others yet, and while the premise of having students "train"...more

Symmetry is key, everything must be absolutely perfect! 8!!!!

Ever since i got into the Soul Eater manga (and after, the show), I have wished for more of this fantastic manga! Soul Eater extended my imagination and got me into writing short stories based on Atsushi Ohkubo's work. This series is the MOST unique piece i have ever seen. The only thing i dislike the most about Soul Eater is that I am provided with only 100 chapters of manga and 51 episodes of the discontinued series :(

I like the concept of this series--"weapon meisters" control weapons that have human forms and eat souls--but I couldn't seem to get into it. There was some typical shonen cliches, like boob jokes and nose bleeds and that one guy who thinks he's all that but isn't (and the pervy old man), but the cool background illustrations (like a crescent moon bleeding from its mouth) would have made up for that. The real problem was that halfway through the book, I had no idea why the weapon meisters needed...more

I watched the anime way before I even picked this up. I must say I'm actually disappointed by reading the actual manga that the anime I really like is based on.

Looking at the first chapter right off the bat, Maka and Soul are drawn very oddly. Soul's features don't take up a large portion of his face as it should, making his eyes look tiny and his mouth normal and therefore a little younger than he should be. Maka also looked really weird. I can't describe it.. Well, both looked much younger in...more

Soul Eater was the very first anime I watched (the only one to actually be finished too D: ) and the first manga I bought. I absolutely adore it. The characters are amazingly thought up, and drawn very well. The whole premise of Soul Eater is very original, and I LOVE IT!!!!!! I mean, people that can turn into Weapons?? Who wouldn't like that????!!
