Although this was a mandatory read in the school curricula, I have never read it back then. I read it now though and I regret I didn't do it before.
It is a beautiful historic fiction about the Romanian Jder family who served their king, Stefan, a XV century king extremely known to all Romanians. It is a love story, an adventure and a history lesson all in one.
I recommend it to all ages and nationalities.

This author tried to copy -but without success- the polish author Henryk Sienkiewicz. The descriptions used by Sadoveanu are sometimes dull, without weight, superficial. He tried to dress the marxist-bolshevik conception using medieval history, and tried to explain why 'the light comes from the East' [Moscow]. Too bad that he wasn't able to create an independent literature, but a party-literature.
