Ladies and gentlemen, I’d like to draw your attention to one of the funniest books I’ve ever read - Holly’s Inbox. You see, this is the reason I’m starting to love e-mail/letter books. Not because of the detailed descriptions and getting lost in a different world, like many of us seek in a good (fantasy) book, but simply because it constantly made me laugh and because it lifted my spirits high into the sky. If you’re looking for one of those light, fluffy, silly books, then this is the one. A bo...more

I can say that this book was better then I thought it was going to be. Actually WAY better then I thought it was going to be. And talk about funny. I was laughing so hard reading this that my eyes teared up to a point where I couldn't see to keep reading. The more I laughed the more the people around me laughed. I hope there's more to come as it appears from how the book ended.

If your looking for something that will crack you up and is a fast paced read, you really need to get this book.

I came across this book in the library and being a sucker for swirly text, the jacket appealed to me.

Meet Holly Denham, a receptionist who has managed to blag her job by embellishing her C.V. This book documents her relationships and conversations with her friends, family and colleagues, via her email in-box.

While the format of this book may not be original, the characters never bore you, and I found myself cringing along with Holly. I will certainley be checking the inbox on the web in the co...more

OK, I'll be the first to admit that I don't read a lot of chick lit. And actually, this book came my way due to a case of mistaken identity when the author was actually trying to contact a different blogger named Melissa. I think we both got a good laugh over that and I decided I ought to give the book a try, even though it's not my usual read.

Oh my, am I glad I did. Holly's Inbox is hysterical. Seriously. My husband was laughing and shaking his head at me laughing out loud while I was reading....more

Holly’s Inbox by Holly Denham lets readers take a peek into British Holly’s e-mail inbox. In the beginning of the book, Holly has just taken a job as a receptionist at a company based in London. We are introduced to an interesting cast of characters: her co-worker Trish, the sexy vice president James, her gay best friend Jason, her man-loving friend Aisha and an array of other intriguing and quirky friends.

The book is written entirely through e-mails which is exciting because you get an insider...more

This is the story of Holly Denham, who takes a job as a receptionist at a large corporate bank. Within a day of first starting she has received the cold shoulder from the other receptionist, fended off numerous well-meaning queries from her mum, and made a few cock-ups.

The whole story is told through emails: exchanges between Holly and her two best friends Aisha and Jason; a gradual thawing of relations between Holly and Trish, the other receptionist; and some serious flirting between Holly and...more

I read a lot of reviews of this book on blogs that I follow, and decided I'd really like to give it a try. Sometimes e-mail type books stress me out because if they are written in certain ways I have a lot of trouble following them (especially if they jump from person to person very quickly).

I enjoyed how the e-mails didn't always say exactly what was going on, and the reader is left to pick up pieces here and there to get the general idea... so, to me, it seemed more true to the e-mail format t...more

Holly’s Inbox should come with a warning – “anything you can’t do one handed, get it done before you settle down to read.” Why? Because this hilarious book is not leaving your clutches until it’s finished. Holly’s Inbox by Holly Denham (ISBN: 9781402219030; Sourcebooks Casablanca) will be glued to your hands until its unexpected conclusion. This tale of Holly Denham’s life, a London receptionist at her first day on a new job, is incredibly smart and funny.

I’m not a laugh out loud type of book re...more

Synopsis:

"Ever wanted a peek at someone else's emails?" That's one of the teasers for Holly Inbox, a 672 page novel, composed entirely of emails by, for or about Holly Dedham. Don't be put off by the book's length - the characters are engrossing and the book flies by!

Young, vivacious, and relatively inexperienced, Holly has a new job as a receptionist at a busy corporate bank in London. We read about her ups and downs as she faces bullying co-workers, social mishaps, well meaning but socially ag...more

Published By: Sourcebooks Casablanca, an imprint of Sourcebooks Inc., 2009 (originally published in 2007), 672 pages, paperback
ISBN 978-1402219030

Holly’s Inbox is written in an email format which is unique and for me, a little distracting as well (having to check on who the emails are to and from all of the time). Holly’s new job as a receptionist gets a rocky start and she gets more then she’s bargained for with the new employees that she commun...more

Just saw a review of this in Entertainment Weekly. They call it the next Bridget Jones but the interesting thing is "Holly Denham" is really a man! Sounds like fun :)

Well, it really was fun! I loved this book! First of all, it's so different since the whole thing is told through emails. It's quite long but it's a quick, easy read; actually hard to put down. It really is the new Bridget Jones! I love British characters. If you like chick-lit, I highly recommend Holly's Inbox.

This book was fun, and don't be scared by those pages. Just cut it in half and you get a number closer to reality. This book was entirely made from emails, and some of those emails could be only a line, some a question mark. So when there are a few lines on a page, then you understand that you read it pretty fast. I read it quickly and when I was near the end I could not put it down, I had to know what would happen!

Holly is a receptionist, but of course she lied on her CV. She befriends the othe...more

When I discovered this book at Barnes & Noble, I immediately added it to my TBR List. I was quite surprised to learn my library owned a copy and was first on the wait list. I couldn't wait to begin reading Holly's e-mails.

I was looking forward to reading this as I read so many glowing reviews. I have to admit, around page 200 or so, I lost interest in Holly and her friends. I really wanted to know Holly's back-story with Toby. It took awhile for Holly to disclose to Trisha, her co-worker.

Amazon is taking a while to post my actual review, so here's what I wrote in it's "raw" form:

Told entirely through emails, Holly's Inbox tells the story of a young woman starting a new job in a difficult office, her checkered romantic life and her supportive friends. Very much like Bridget Jones' Diary in tone and style, this is a fun, surprising romp and I lost a great deal of sleep zipping through the 730 hilarious pages. I especially enjoyed the "extras" at the end, which give some background...more

As a fan of books such as Bridget Jones Diary, Meg Cabot's The Boy Next Door and Boy Meets Girl, I had already read a variety of books that use the email, or epistolary format in telling the story. While I like the playful way that this style shows the development of a relationship, there does seem to be some advantage to the author jumping in from time to time to guide the story. In the case of Holly's Inbox, all we get for the story comes directly from emails. Over half of the novel (which alt...more

Have you ever wanted to feel what it is like in someone else's shoes? Well you can in Holly's Inbox. Holly Denham has decided to open her inbox to readers. So come take a wild and crazy ride into Holly's world.

Holly Denham has just gotten herself a new job working as a receptionist for Huerst and Wright. A huge financial institution. As if the first day of a new job wasn't hard enough, having your friends and family emailing you every second of every day can be really stressful. You can bet thr...more

I was really not sure I would like this book. The book itself is really really thick and intimidating. It's also really hard to read at first because it is written 100% in email format and I found myself getting very confused about all the characters the first 100 pages of the book. After a while you grow accustomed to the names and start to learn the characters and their unique stories. After 200 pages, I was hooked on the book and found the pages to go by faster and faster. It took me approxim...more

This has got to be the funniest book I've read in a loooooooooong time. Honestly, I could not stop laughing. There was not a boring page. It is utterly absurd and emotional and completely messes with your head. By the end, everyone is not who you thought they were in the beginning.

Really, it was great. I loved it.

The workplace is filled with gossip. It seems every week someone has done something. However where I work, you have to go round and physically tell everyone and hope that whoever you are talking about doesn't overhear. Always akward when you relise that have been listening round the corner. Anyways they don't have this problem in offices, becuase they just email the gossip! Amazing! And this is what Holly's Inbox is about really. Office gossip in email form. I being a nosy person enjoyed snoopin...more

I quite liked this book and was much better than I expected. At first glance I was turned off by the length of the book (723 pages!) but like others who have reviewed, sped through it pretty quickly as the email format meant not all that many words per page. The story took a while to develop (not too much happens until about half way through), but I think maybe that was the authors intention - i.e. the reader was given a chance to get to know the characters personalities first before any major c...more

A cute, fast read. A perfect holiday book for when all you want to do is escape and not think for a few minutes at a time. Yes, it is just emails and sometime its can get confusing and tedious reading the "To" and "From" columns all the time to figure out who's saying what and when, but overall it is a cute story along the Bridget Jones Diary line - a single, working girl with meanie co workers, a gay best friend, and a super supportive dsyfunctional gal pal, and your ever-present love misunders...more

This fun, silly book was written entirely in email form, and was a remarkably fast read considering its 600ish page size. There's not much in it to surprise you: the harried and insecure heroine, the sassy coworker, the scoundrel-in-disguise love interest, the gay best friend, the slutty girlfriend, and the interfering mother.

This was a fun and fluffy read, kind of like the literary equivalent of cotton candy. It's sweet and fun, but a little goes a long way and you find yourself craving a subst...more

HOLLY’S INBOX is a very fun read. I was a little intimidated by the 600+ pages, but it read quicker than a normal book and it only took me a few pages to adjust to the email format. Holly is starting a new job at a big bank and has no clue what she is doing. The emails are funny from the very beginning as she deals with a snarky co-worker, her gay best friend, and her other best friend who is really a bit of a slutty lush. We follow Holly through the ups-and-downs at work, a relationship, and wh...more

From My Blog (3.5 stars)....

Fun and gossipy and written by a man makes Holly’s Inbox: A Scandal In the City all the more intriguing. What I did read of Holly’s Inbox: Scandal In the City was clever and witty with brilliant and intriguing characters. If I found it a fun book, whatever made me stop? The entire book, all 544 pages are written in the format of e-mails. While I appreciate this new style, it is not one I care for. It could be my age or my avoidance of my own Inbox, but either way, the...more

Written entirely in emails, almost exclusively from Holly Denham’s work inbox. Holly is a receptionist at a big bank in England, and the emails give insight into her working relationships with coworkers, a romantic relationship with a VP at the bank, her family, and her friends. The idea of this book intrigued me (thus I checked it out from the library) and I really wanted to like it. There were some funny parts (e.g. the relationship with parents, brother, and grandmother) but I really thought...more

Holly is a receptionist who has just started a new job. Her days are filled with interesting emails from co-workers, friends and family. There is Patricia who is rude and hard to please. Holly's Mum who sends unnecessary advice. Her sister who cons her into keeping dead rats in her freezer. Are you interested yet? You should be.

Holly is an extremely likable person and that becomes apparent within the first few pages. She is smart, witty and hilarious. Definitely the type of girl friend I would l...more

I tried this book on the recommendation of a co-worker. It turned out to be incredibly thick! I made it through "Month 1" and then kind of skipped through the rest of the book to the end. This was a blog that became popular that they published in book form for the author's fans but aside from some crazy work scenarios and funny conversations with family that I could relate to, I wasn't much interested in the crazy friend. Probably this would have worked better for me if there was a little narrat...more

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I want to read the sequel, but it's not available in the states and bookdepository is out-of-stock. Bah.

It's like a soap opera of e-mails that you can't look away from. :)

Ohmigod, this book was so boring! And HUGE, which I hated. I used to like the email/IM layout in books, but in this book, it just included like so many pointless transactions which made the book probably like twice as long as it needed to be, which annoyed the hell out of me. The story was actually okay and I liked all the characters a lot, but the format just ruined it for me. Filler just annoys me and this book was full of it.

Otherwise, typical chick-lit stuff, don't need to tell you twice. Th...more
