Really good beginning to this series. I liked the story a lot, and liked the H and h. It's really more of a PI investigation (Cyn is a PI) than PNR at first. Reynolds doesn't spend a lot of time setting up her vampire world; it's more an investigation and bits and pieces of her vampire backstory fall into place as the story goes along. I like that better than the big info-dump at the beginning of the first story of a new series.

I love the scene where Raphael and Duncan come to her More...

OMG this book was a lesson of "how to destroy a potential success book with a lame end"!!! I HATE IT!

Calming down... calming down... ok, now I can explain better....

I like this book... it's hot! The sex scenes were great! True! When Cyn and Raphael get together you can be certain that will read great and well describe sex.
I love the story! It's a little to much dramatic the initial narration (some parts she describe Raphael so potent and scary that I ro More...

3.5: good first effort from a new urban fantasy/PNR author

I had never heard of this author and gave this urban fantasy a try after reading about it on an online forum. I was pleasantly surprised. It was a good mix of mystery, suspense, action and romance. The book kept me on the edge of my seat and it was hard to put down. While there were some simliarities to other series, the author still managed to keep me reading. I liked the hero--powerful, mysterious, good looking, commanding, More...

I thoroughly enjoyed this story right from the start. Inside these wonderful pages you'll find a great cocktail mix of romance, action, drama, and suspense. I truly had a hard time putting the book down for a minute - no fooling!

The main characters are Cynthia and Raphael and let me say that they share an amazing chemistry together. It was great to get behind a heroine like Cyn who is an adult, who is not perfect, who has family issues, has been through some hard challenging times, a More...

Loved it!! Smart, sexy, and lethal Cyn. She's the type of heroines I love. The characters usually make or break my book rating. I like it when both male and female leads are equal. Most authors make the men so whipped it's not even funny...especially if we're talking about an alpha male!! Raphael does show a softer side to Cyn, but he's not giving into all her whims either. And Cyn has just enough backbone and stubbornness to defy the all powerful vampire Lord Raphael, and stand her groun More...

I really enjoyed this vampire romance. The heroine, Cyn, is a strong smart woman who gets involved with the Raphael, Vampire Lord of the western US whenever she helps find a missing vampire as part of her job as a private investigator. Raphael is a very interesting character, as a vampire lord he is strong, arrogant and not afraid of violence to achieve his ends. He is also powerful and sexy, he and Cyn have an instant spark between them that leads to some hot love scenes.

The writing was really More...

LOVED IT! This is my first book by DB Reynolds... I happened upon it while shopping in the Kindle store on Amazon.com. AMAZING BOOK! Great new (or at least new to me) Vampire series. I have already downloaded Book 2 to start reading tonight! It almost reminds me of Jeaniene Frost's Cat & Bones novels... It has the quintessential bad a%* vampire boss and the tough female he falls for... such a great story! Be aware... Ms. Reynolds leaves you hangin' so you almost HAVE to immediately buy th More...

Excellent start to this vampire series!

Lord Raphael rules with an iron fang and he his harsh, but oh so HOT! He has hired Cyn to investigate the recent kidnapping of one of the female vampires under his protection. Cyn is one kick-ass, awesome private investigator, and when the two of them meet sparks fly. This is not your typical paranormal vampire romance series. There is a lot of story that delves into this fascinating and different world. At times it is very cruel, but necessary More...

PI Cyn is hired to provide human insight when a vampiress under the powerful vampire Lord Raphael's protection is kidnapped, and humans were part of the plot.

This book did not end up being quite what I expected, quite a few people have mentioned reading and enjoying these on the forums I regularly haunt, so I didn't check out the reviews before reading this and was surprised to find that Raphael was not paranormal romance - despite the 'guy name' title on the cover - but a sexy urba More...

I came across this via Parajunkee and as soon as I read this line in her review, I knew I had to read it! “I need to simultaneously smoke a cigarette and punch something after finishing this novel.” That is exactly what I look for in my UF/PNR books… and boy was she right. Not recommended for romance, but very good for a smart female human PI helping vampires solve a kidnapping.

STORY BRIEF:
Cyn is a former Los Angeles cop, now working as a private investigator. She's tough, cool, smart, and rich (inherited). When she was a cop, she saved a vampire's life, so now they hire her when they need human help. Alexandra is a vampire who lives with Raphael, lord of the vampires in the western U.S. She is kidnapped by a group of vampires and humans. Raphae More...

This was my first OF MANY D.B. Reynolds books! I loved this book!
First of all cyn is one tough woman!! She is a private investigator and she can stand her ground against the toughest of people and she is even able to prove her skills against some pretty nasty vamps! (0f course it was proven to be helpful to have a few vamps on her side of the ring!)

EXCELLENT!!!!! This one is a must read. OMG that super sexy Vampire Raphael!!! He's sooo smooth and totally alpha male. Cyn (Cynthia) is a fantastic kick butt strong heroine and stands her ground with arrogant Raphael. The love scenes are absolutely hot. This is a definite page turner. At the beginning I was a bit put off by the high drama as Raphael and his crew of vampires is so old world formal but after a few pages and Cyn's modern day woman and sassy dialogue the story was off and running. HOLY HANNAH! WHAT HAVE I GOTTEN MYSELF INTO BY STARTING THIS SERIES? I'm going to have to go get the next couple books before I go insane with curiosity, aren't I? Immediately. Right now. Dang it.

My first character shout out goes to Raphael for being a vicious killer when he needs to be. I love that he's so removed from humanity that he has to apologize for being less than tactful with Cyn after insulting her humanity. It's honestly nice to see a vampire who isn't cuddly. Not More...

He is a Vampire Lord and she is a no nonsense woman who can take care of herself. Oh boy, get ready for a wild ride! Complete with lust, betrayal, love and heartache all wrapped up in one yummy read! The love scenes are incredibly hot and oh so VIVID (if you like that kind of thing, I know I do) but there is so much more to the Vampire Lord Raphael and he is hesitant to give in to Cyn, in the end the cliff hanger is gut wrenching and you just can't wait to tear into the next the book. I stumbled upon this book in the Kindle store, the reviews on Amazon and Goodreads were mostly positive so I gave it a shot. I'm glad that I did. The story was entertaining, Cyn is a PI hired to find a vampire who was kidnapped from vampire Lord Raphael. Raphael is arrogant, gorgeous and the HVIC (head vampire in charge)- shocking I know, an arrogant, good looking vampire. Even though this is a common storyline found in many paranormal fantasies this book held my interest through the action(l More...

This is the first pnr by DB Reynolds and the first in the Vampires in America series. It is not the ususal pnr story and I had my misgivings about it. The H, Rafael is a 700 year old vampire who is the "master" of the West Coast vampires. At first I thought this would be like an old Bela Lugosi movie as everyone referred to him as "Lord Rafael." After reading review after review, and seeing all the group debates over this series, I finally gave in. It was not what I was expecting at all. It has a true suspense story line, Cynthia is hired to find a kidnapped vampire by Raphael, The Lord of this territory. And in the process, gets attacked, betrayed, and falls hard for the gorgeous Vampire. The cast of characters surrounding Raphael are a great addition to the plot. They are each charming or evil in the More...

A solid debut novel.

I liked the female lead - cyn. And I liked each of the vamps that we got to deal with. However the 'romance' between Cyn and Raphael is most confusing.

There was obvious attraction
But then a confusing first sex scene
Cyn cannot refuse Raphael anything after that
Cyn falls in love but as a reader we dont really understand why
Its never made clear why Raphael thinks that their relationship wont work.

The ending was pretty crap....a More...

I wasn't too sure when I started to read this book. The mention of a Vampire governing board made me think of the Sookie Stackhouse/Trublood series and my mind almost flicked off.

I kept reading and was surprised. By the end of the book I admired and felt sorry for Cyn and Raphael.

I needed a good vampire novel and this did the trick. I could not put this book down. When I was not reading it, I was thinking about it.

For a first book of a series I was impressed with the characters. The story was your typical bad vampire versus good vampire(well, maybe not so good)and a strong heroine. Raphael and Cynthia were a great match. The vampire, Raphael, was so complex that I was pissed at him most of the time. One minute he is sexy and tender and the next he is r More...

four and a half stars. A good book with strong characters. Not a lot of description on the characters, so you dont get a clear picture in your head of what each person looks like, so that part is pretty open. The story is strong, as are both the main characters. Cynthia Leighton is a strong ex cop now running her own private investigation services. most of her cases have become those of the local Vampires. They live in the real world, but are not really part of it. Cyn though , seems to accept More...

Okay- The review says 4 stars, but I would actually give it 3¾♥'s.

This is an action packed, mystery meets vampires meets romance novel. It's the first in the Vampires in America series. Cyn is a former would-be cop turned private investigator, although she does has enough money that she does not need to work. She's a no strings attached kind of gal- rocky relationship at best with her half sister and a f-buddy as her bedroom "fix". She lives in LA, but it's a darker LA wi More...
