It's hard to write a summary about this book, because so much of it revolves around what happens at the end of the third book. Montmorency is still doing undercover work officially, but he is also seeking...drat, that would be telling.
There was some introduction to historical figures in the last volume, but this book really takes shape as historical fiction, as we start with the funeral of Queen Victoria and end with the assassination of McKinley. The period details, as always, are wonderful.

The fourth installment in the Montmorency series follows closely on the heels of the last one. Malpensa is still at large and since George's murder, his friends and family have sworn revenge on Moretti. Frank is sinking deeper and deeper into a funk due to the anarchists. While Frnak drinks his life away, Robert is so distraught at Maggie's death that his mental faculties have cracked and he's developped an obsessive compulsive behaviour in regards to washing!

*spolier alert* A great book to end the series. I KNOW that I will definitley be reading this again. This was a great improvement compared to the boring the atmosphere of it's predecessor Montmorency and the Assassins: Master, Criminal, Spy?. Full of action that kept me on edge. I stayed up the whole night till twelve to finish the book. I hated that it had to end with Montmorency being murdered but I Updale had thought through this and I should admit that I wouldn't have picked a better ending....more

The fouth in the title character series where after an unforutnate end of one of the main characters the story seems to be taking a turn and near the dark side for where Montmorency wants revenge and must bring out Scarper to do it.
The ending was amazing and what a cliffhanger.
I hope Eleanor Updale will write another Montmorency book 5.
You can't end it with a cliffhanger with many questions unanswered. I really enjoy the Montmorency series. Also on the cover, reminds me of Edward Norton.

The fourth book in the saga of Montmorency and his dual life. After George is murdered, Montmorency and Jack set out to find the killers and take revenge. Can he learn to be a father to Tom? Can he stop Farcett's slide into insanity? Can he teach the next generation to forgive when the need for revenge is eating at his own soul? As he races around the globe seeking to stop the anarchist's from killing again he must come face to face with his own past once and for all.
I didn't like this as well as the previous two books. First of all, I am not a fan of the ending. If this is the end of the series (and 6 years since its publication seems to indicate that it might be), then it's a supremely unsatisfying ending. We are totally left hanging! I also really missed George in this book. It couldn't be helped, but there you go. Anyhow, I hope that another book is written eventually, because I'd sure like to find out what happens.
I honestly felt as though this series was snuffed by readers and critics. I thoroughly enjoyed this series, though I really think it fouls have been better by dropping the YA rating. The series is not YA. The cussing has been editing, but that's about it. I hope we see a followup to Montmorency"s revenge; I am dying to know what happens to Montmorency. This is a series I will be rereading again and again.
Why, Eleanor Updale? Why this cruel, cruel cliffhanger? Aaaaarg.
This book lacked... something. Better than the first two, not as good as the third. There was so much action that description went by the wayside.
Great description of Farcett's condition and treatment, though. That's some forward-thinking methodology for the early 1900s.
When's the next one due out? *want*

Is there another book in this series? I'm half-hoping not, because it's definitely not in my library system, but at the same time, that seems an awfully mean place to end a series. To be truthful, it's been a relief to finish with this book. I enjoy most of the characters (Mary Gibson is quite uninteresting for her place in the story, but that's another thing altogether) and the premise of both the original books and the follow-ups, but I haven't allowed myself to get new library books while thi...more

Once again, a shocking cliffhanger!!! I actually wrote to Eleanor Updale, saying how much I've enjoyed read ing all the books (waxed philosophical about them I believe) and asking if there was going to be a conclusion novel of this series and she very kindly wrote back. Apparently hernew editor at the publisher in London isn't SURE if there should be another Montmorency book in the series and so she may have to leave us all hanging! NO!!!! Anything but that! I promised her that I would get the w...more
I was really anxious to start this book. Finally!
Again, this book does not really focus on Montmorency's character. Updale fails to develop Montmorency's character. There would be so much more to be explored.
Frank really starts to annoy me in this book. He kind of thinks he is a full grown adult when he isn't. I do like Tom's increased role, but wish Montmorency would stop chasing after Mary Gibson and marry Vi. She deserves him.
Well, there definitely will be a sequel due to a cliffhanger ending...more

Very great book! Updale leads you through a maze of mystery and really makes her characters alive. I will miss the Montmorency series and I hope she writes a fifth book!
