I have a pet peeve with this book.

Page 84: "Her cousin, Abigail, though, had dancing eyes, dark hair, and a round, full face."

Page 86: "'I should be delighted, sir.' Mistress Putnam's eyes danced."

Page 87: "'It will be my mission to help him.' Mistress Putnam smiled and her eyes danced."

Really? Three sets of dancing eyes within 3 pages of one another? Could the author not think of another descriptive word to get her point across?

I had two other spots marked for similar reasons. It's just a pet...more

This is a great historical fiction story for young readers to catch a glimpse of one of the dark spots in American history, the Salem witch trials.

The story follows the life of Drucilla, an orphan girl who finds a home with the Putnam family in Salem. When Drucilla and some of her friends begin to behave strangely, their parents make accusations of witchcraft toward members of their community. Drucilla then has to deal with the moral dilemma of whether to go along with the crowd or to make a sta...more

In the Time of the Witches, Anna Myers has taken the 1962-63 Salem Trials and built a story around it. The events in this book actually happened. When a new reverend comes to Salem village, his appointment is not unanimous. There are many people who are against him. Family feuds also play a major part in this.

Dru and Gabe are 2 orphans who have been shuffled between various families of the village since they were 4 years old. When they are 12, Dru and Gabe are separated and they are sent to live...more

Time of the Witches, by Anna Myers

"Mama, I want to charge Rose as a witch."

[...:]

"That is ridiculous my dear," said her mother. "Rose cannot be a witch. The girl still owes us a year of service. Maybe next year (Time of the Witches, p. 162)."

Welcome to the absurdity of the Salem Witch trials, a dark period in America's history. Nineteen innocent men and women were killed as witches; killed without proof other than the flimsy accusations of a group of young girls. "Time of the Witches" is an att...more

Myers’ novel about the Salem Witch Trials brings a time of mass hysteria to life. Drucilla and Gabe, born on the same day, are raised together when Drucilla’s mother dies in childbirth. When they are twelve, their foster family relocates and the two young people must take positions as servants. Widow Mary Putnam offers Gabe a home. So there's this chick named Dru and she has this guy who she loves (first like a brother but slowly more then that). She has never had a mother and the only person that shes always had by her side is Gabe(the guy), but when they are truly separated she goes to live in the Putnam family. Mistress Putnam becomes quite attached to her, and Dru realizes she has had a sad past and with that and her yearni...more

I just finished this book and as I was reading it I kept thinking "this is a bit far-fetched" or "this must be more fiction than fact" but at the end when I finished the last page I noticed the Author's note. In it she explained that all the people (aside from two of the characters) were all actual people from history. Because of that I have to give it three stars instead of two. It was sort of a sad story (duh - it's about the Salem witch trials) but I'm always hoping for happiness. The book ha...more

This was a suspenseful story about the Salem Witch Trials. It is written in the words of someone that played a key roll in those trials. Drucilla orphaned at birth has finally found the home and mother she has always wanted in Anne Putnam. Even though it means being separated from the only family she has ever known. That family is Gabe who's mother who delivered him along side of Drucilla's when she was born. Since that day Gabe and Dru were always raised together, even after his mother passed a...more

This Salem witch story creates a sense of foreboding that lasts almost the entire length of the book, but doesn't as effectively convey the actual horror of what transpired. It suggests reasonable explanations for the events from the perspective of one of the girls (an imaginary one) who was caught up in the accusations, so because she isn't particularly admirable or likeable, I had some trouble relating to the narrator, Drucilla. Someone who is particularly interested in the Salem witch trials...more

Drucilla has never really had a family of her own. Her mother died giving birth to her in the same room, at the same time, her best friend Gabriel was also being born. His family took her in as their own until they all died in a plague. After that they were inseparable. They bounced from foster home to foster home until, at the tender age of 12, they landed in opposing Putnam households in Salem, Massachusetts.

Dru was taken in by Ann and Thomas Putnam who already had three children of their own....more

Dru’s mother died giving birth to her, and her father died soon after, leaving Dru to be raised by Gabe’s parents. I give this book 4 stars because its about adventure and taking your time in doing things. Time of the Witches is about a girl that is bewitched and has to try and find out who the boy is in her dreams. That is why i like this book too! I like it because it has a lot of adventure in it and i like a lot of adventure. In the beginning it talks about the fire in the woods when she tries to figure out who the boy is. Its adventure and i like it. In some parts it makes me sad because of what people d...more

I am almost as fascinated by the Salem witch trials as I am about World War II. This was a very interesting historical fiction about two characters who begin to grow up together--from different families but orphaned together. Their lives take quite different roads as they find themselves caught up in the hysteria of the Salem witch trials. However, they continue to be weaved together throughout the happenings of Salem Town. What a great, quick read!

This story was a fast and easy read. Its about a boy and girl that were born at the same time, Gabe and Drucilla, and about their journey on survival....they were together for years, and then separated, living just across the fields from each other. One in a kind home, the other not.

Dru finds out what can happen when one tells lies, sending many innocent people to their death in the witch hunt.

This book is amazing. You guys need to read it, it is a story about a girl named Drucilla, or Dru for short. She was born at the same time as a kid named Gabe, both of there mothers died at the same time.
Dru's mom died of bleeding out when dru was born, and they were together ever since. Find out in there adventure if they will fall in love, fight,or if one becomes a witch?

Another story about the Salem witch trial? Not so. I've read numerous books on the topic and found this novel an interesting twist. Told from the perspective of an orphaned young woman (Dru), the story offers an inside view of Ann and Thomas Putnam, their children and how a thirst for revenge and attention turns a town against itself. Highly recommended. Maggie

I was once very interested in the Salem witch trials, so this book was a great way to rekindle that old learning. The book uses a lot of historical characters, though the main character is fictitious. The relationship that drives the plot didn't become what I had hoped, but I suppose that I should have known better, given the time period.

This book takes place in the time of the first 13 colonies when we no electricity and horse wagons. It was the time of the salem witch trial. In my opinion it was a good book not good or not bad. it has a lot of loyalty and courage. It recommend this book if you like old fashion books about the olden days in the first 13 colonies.

This was a really good book. The Cover looks like it would be a horror book, but it's not. It is based on a true story about people being accused as witches when they weren't in Salem and Salem village in Massachusetts in the United States. If you are into history and witches I think you would really like this book.

This is a great twist on the traditional story of the salem witch trials. The thing I liked about this book was that it was told from the point of view of one of the girls involved in accusing people of being a witch. In the story she is also one of the people involved in ending the tragedy that was the witch trials and their execution of innocent individuals.

I gave this book two stars because i didnt think it was very good. Alot of it didnt make sense to me, because alot of it was in old english. Another reason is that i didnt gett the plot line. It seemed like the whole book was about a couple of people who were making people get hanged for stupid reasons.
