This is a great historical fiction story for young readers to catch a glimpse of one of the dark spots in American history, the Salem witch trials.
The story follows the life of Drucilla, an orphan girl who finds a home with the Putnam family in Salem. When Drucilla and some of her friends begin to behave strangely, their parents make accusations of witchcraft toward members of their community. Drucilla then has to deal with the moral dilemma of whether to go along with the crowd or t More...

I have a pet peeve with this book.
Page 84: "Her cousin, Abigail, though, had dancing eyes, dark hair, and a round, full face."
Page 86: "'I should be delighted, sir.' Mistress Putnam's eyes danced."
Page 87: "'It will be my mission to help him.' Mistress Putnam smiled and her eyes danced."
Really? Three sets of dancing eyes within 3 pages of one another? Could the author not think of another descriptive word to get her p More...

Todays Book review is a new teen book which covers a side of the Salem Witch Trial and is titled "Time of The Witches" by Anna Myers.-2009

In the Time of the Witches, Anna Myers has taken the 1962-63 Salem Trials and built a story around it. The events in this book actually happened. When a new reverend comes to Salem village, his appointment is not unanimous. There are many people who are against him. Family feuds also play a major part in this.
Dru and Gabe are 2 orphans who have been shuffled between various families of the village since they were 4 years old. When they are 12, Dru and Gabe are separated and they are se More...

Time of the Witches, by Anna Myers

Myers’ novel about the Salem Witch Trials brings a time of mass hysteria to life. Drucilla and Gabe, born on the same day, are raised together when Drucilla’s mother dies in childbirth. They share a special bond, and after Gabe’s parents succumb to smallpox, various villagers bring them up as siblings. When they are twelve, their foster family relocates and the two young people must take positions as servants. Widow Mary Putnam offers Gabe a home. Drucilla is thrilled when the Widow’s steps

I just finished this book and as I was reading it I kept thinking "this is a bit far-fetched" or "this must be more fiction than fact" but at the end when I finished the last page I noticed the Author's note. In it she explained that all the people (aside from two of the characters) were all actual people from history. Because of that I have to give it three stars instead of two. It was sort of a sad story (duh - it's about the Salem witch trials) but I'm always hoping fo

On a cold January night two mothers went into labor. Two babies, a boy and a girl, were born at exactly the same time, but one mother didn’t survive. One was left to raise both children.
Gabe and Drucilla have been together since the cold night of their birth and even though Gabe’s mother has loved Drucilla like her own, she still has a longing for a family of her own. For fifteen years Gabe and Dru were connected – bound in friendship and heart, but life doesn’t always work out th More...

I thought that the book is a slow kind of a book it takes place in Salem. An orphan named Drucilla is adopted by a wiked lady and they live in a haunting house. But Drucilla feels like shes drawn to her because she's never had a mom so she likes her. They get a new servant named Tituba and something strange happens a lot of young girls start to get sick or ill and they think it's because of whichcraft . Then Drucilla starts to be one of the acusers and starts to blame people but when her best fr

This Salem witch story creates a sense of foreboding that lasts almost the entire length of the book, but doesn't as effectively convey the actual horror of what transpired. It suggests reasonable explanations for the events from the perspective of one of the girls (an imaginary one) who was caught up in the accusations, so because she isn't particularly admirable or likeable, I had some trouble relating to the narrator, Drucilla. Someone who is particularly interested in the Salem witch trials

Drucilla has never really had a family of her own. Her mother died giving birth to her in the same room, at the same time, her best friend Gabriel was also being born. His family took her in as their own until they all died in a plague. After that they were inseparable. They bounced from foster home to foster home until, at the tender age of 12, they landed in opposing Putnam households in Salem, Massachusetts.

Drucilla is an orphan who longs for a family. When the Putnam's of Salem Village take her in, Dru thinks she's found the family she's dreamed of.
But Mistress Putnam's behavior is strange, and when young girls begin to fall ill without explanation, there's talk of witchcraft. Soon the accusations are flying and Dru even makes one of her own. Innocent lives hang in the balance, and Dru must find a way to stop the madness.

Drucilla and her best friend, Gabe, were born in the same house on the same cold, dark January night in Salem Village. Dru’s mother died giving birth to her, and her father died soon after, leaving Dru to be raised by Gabe’s parents. When Gabe’s parents also die a few years later, the two children, who are as close as siblings, live together in various foster homes until the year they turn twelve, when they are separated for the first time. Dru goes to live in the home of Thomas and Ann Putman,

I am almost as fascinated by the Salem witch trials as I am about World War II. This was a very interesting historical fiction about two characters who begin to grow up together--from different families but orphaned together. Their lives take quite different roads as they find themselves caught up in the hysteria of the Salem witch trials. However, they continue to be weaved together throughout the happenings of Salem Town. What a great, quick read!

Solid YA historical fiction on the Salem witch trials, ideal for recommending to teens tasked with reading a book of historical fiction and not too excited about the prospect. Glam cover (which admittedly makes it appear as though there ARE witches in Salem) helps make it an easy sell (as does its being just shy of 200 pages), and the story adequately explores the way groupthink can quickly slide into hysteria.

This story was a fast and easy read. Its about a boy and girl that were born at the same time, Gabe and Drucilla, and about their journey on survival....they were together for years, and then separated, living just across the fields from each other. One in a kind home, the other not.
Dru finds out what can happen when one tells lies, sending many innocent people to their death in the witch hunt.

I was once very interested in the Salem witch trials, so this book was a great way to rekindle that old learning. The book uses a lot of historical characters, though the main character is fictitious. The relationship that drives the plot didn't become what I had hoped, but I suppose that I should have known better, given the time period.

This was a really good book. The Cover looks like it would be a horror book, but it's not. It is based on a true story about people being accused as witches when they weren't in Salem and Salem village in Massachusetts in the United States. If you are into history and witches I think you would really like this book.

This is a great twist on the traditional story of the salem witch trials. The thing I liked about this book was that it was told from the point of view of one of the girls involved in accusing people of being a witch. In the story she is also one of the people involved in ending the tragedy that was the witch trials and their execution of innocent individuals.

This book was really creepy but it used real facts and real people!! It was very sad and kind of disturbing knowing what they did to these people. But it really taught me a lot about the Salem witch trials so when I went to Salem I actually knew something about what happened! It was a very good book though.

I enjoyed this book alot. I have always liked historical fiction and it was interesting to view the Salem witch trials from one of the accusers'(albeit reluctant)perspective. It really shows how people can get caught up in the hysteria and the damage it can cause.

Loved this book in that scary way where you wonder.....did this really happen in the United States? Based on the Salem Witch trials and the horror that surrounded false accusations, the main character Dru learns to stand up for herself and defend what is right.

I have read quite a few historical fiction books on the Salem witch trials. This one took a new angle. It was more of a psychological look at the characters. The cover and the romance aspect of this book will add appeal for teen readers.

The story of Drucilla and the witch situation in Salem in the 1800s. The story was ok - the climax was lacking. The characters and basic plotline were based on actual events, but I couldn't really get into the story, and as much as I wanted Dru to continue her relationship with Gabe, there wasn't much I really cared about in this book.

A good historical fiction that gives you a brief look into the Salem witch trials. From everything I've read it really does give an accurate description of what happened at that time, while tying in a story of life and friendship.

This is a great historical fiction read for middle schoolers. About life around salem in the late 1700"s. Author makes it very interesting, and is able to give reader a feeling of how thins were in Massachusetts at that time.
