Laura Purdie Salas does a wonderful job of bringing poetry to young students in a school setting. This anthology of poems manages to touch on some very real social issues children must deal with in and out of the classroom. In "New Mouse", the student is figuring her way around a new school with dead ends, hallways that all look the same and too many ways to get from one place to the next. In "P.U.", the boy is presenting during sharing time and passes gas to the shock of himself and the rest of...more
In preparation for a SKYPE interaction with Laura Purdie Salas in conjunction with WORLD READ ALOUD DAY, we are taking a look at her ealier title, STAMPEDE! POEMS TO CELEBRATE the WILD SIDE OF SCHOOL. Salas offers a youthful, joyful, look at the daily activities of school that tend to bring out the "animal" in students. From the bumblebees that swarm into the doors first thing in the morning to the grey stampede that rushes forth from the school with the last bell.

Ever think of your school as a zoo? Well with this book you will be thinking just that because where else would you find creatures that stampede like elephants, swarm like bees, swoop like sparrows, and swing like monkeys? Within this book are eighteen funny and inventive poems that observe students in their natural habitats and observe their wild behavior, strange communication skills and hungry appetites. It doesn’t matter where the students are they all have gone wild, no matter if it’s in th...more
I loved this book! I really enjoy reading poetry especially when it is funny and relatable. This book is perfect for grades kindergarden to third. It takes the everyday experiences in a school such as pictures day, recess, getting lost in the hall, and lunch time and relates it to a funny scenario when either the students or the teachers are acting like animals. It portrays the school as almost a wild zoo that a student needs to learn how to survive in. The pictures are so bright and colorful I...more

This is a whimsical book of rhyming poems about school. The poems are short, rhyming and fun and it was easy for us to read the whole book at one time.
The emotions conveyed in these poems are so real, I think our oldest identified with just about all of them. And the illustrations are terrific, too. We really enjoyed reading this book together.

A fun collection of poems comparing school students to animals. While it is not my favorite book of poems, children will enjoy the fun, colorful illustrations and clever metaphors. Would be a great book to read with 2nd-4th graders and may be a good lead in to having them write poems about themselves or different aspects of school.

“Prickly
When I'm feeling
porcupine-y,
I get nasty,
I get whiny.
Stay away or
I might stick you.
My sharp words are
quills to prick you.”
