The gentle melancholy of two people coming together in a way which can never lead to full satisfaction, the quiet tragedy of a separation not forced by external powers but by the constant pressure of circumstances-this is what sounds through this splendid story. "Trials and Tribulations" is built entirely on this motive. An honest sturdy young officer and a decen...more

Prekvapivo dobré! Naozaj pán Fontane je zatiaľ jediná svetlá výnimka medzi nudnými nemeckými autormi s ktorých dielami som mala tú česť sa zoznámiť.
Trošku k dielu: hlavná hrdinka so silným charakterom, úprimná a dosť sebavedomá dievčina mi bola veľmi sympatická.

Ganz langsam.
Wunderbar leise, traurig, aufrichtig.

most horrible thing I ever had to read!

This is not a happy story, but as with most of Fontane's works, there were several parts where I laughed out loud. I was especially fascinated by the character of Käthe and would love to write about her.

we read it at school, and it was boring. everytime i tried to read, i fell asleep. in the end i listened to the audiobook (the reader was quite good, thus i got throug it)
it was an early work of Fontane. i think he wrote better ones later.

Recommends it for: people who love endless descriptions of nature and no storyline whatsoever

oh my god, so boring. but maybe I only have this opinion because I read it in class and talking about his description of nature for about 8 weeks wasn't really what I would call helping.
