Not the most popular or best-known Hoffmann, this long novel yet groans with his favourite themes: doppelganger, grotesque situations, coincidences and such. The reader may get lost after a while (it is an intricate plot, after all) but it is evidently one of the aims, if not the only one, of the author to rub out literary conventions in favour of a more feverish, nebulous atmosphere. Leichte Kost war das sicherlich nicht, zumindest keine leicht lesbare, was aber trotzdem nicht heissen soll, daß die Sprache nicht schön zu lesen war. Nur muß man definitiv in Stimmung für sowas sein... und das war ich nicht immer. Was auch der Grund dafür war warum ich ungewöhnlich lange brauchte um das Buch durchzulesen.

Etwas enttäuscht bin ich jedoch dennoch. Die ersten 50 Seiten sind unglaublich stark, aber was nach ihnen folgt löst leider nicht so ganz ein was der Beginn noch ver More...

This novel is a wonderful gothic mystery, with little bits of humour added in. I was hooked from the first page and it is the fastest I have ever read a classic novel. It is full of bizarre characters, that the reader meet through out, however I found that all the characters had a purpose within the novel.

The plot is like a rollercoaster and constantly keeps the reader on the edge on their seat. I was constantly surprised by the direction the novel took as it never went the way I tho More...

when I was about half way through, maybe a bit more, I was thinking it was a good book... lots of coincidences, and too many people who look exactly the same, but nobody is expecting it to be wholly believable...
I liked the little comic character of the man who cut hair.. he was a nice touch...
however by the end,I didnt rate it as highly, it was one too many story within stories, and got too confusing.....

Apparently, what I've been reading on my Kindle is only Volume 1 of 2. I am not a big fan of early gothic and may or may not search out Volume 2, which looks to be difficult to find outside of a major university library. I have been told that Hoffmann's shorter works are better than The Devil's Elixir[s]. I certainly hope so.

Ein interessantes Buch, das ein wenig an David Lynch Filme erinnert. Die etwas verworrene Sprache (gibt es eigentlich einen einzigen, nur aus einem Hauptsatz bestehenden Satz im ganzen Buch?) ist nur auf den ersten Blick etwas kompliziert aber die fehlenden Absätze machen das Lesen ein wenig anstrengend.
Inhaltlich ist "Die Elixiere des Teufels" überwiegend spannend und fesselnd, wenngleich die immer wieder kehrenden Erzählungen in indirekter Rede etwas viel scheinen und die inner More...

Highly entertaining in a 19th century sort of way. Maximally convoluted doppelganger/cursed family plot, super whacked out Book of Revelations style visions. Lots of fun.
