The main attraction of this book is the main protagonist 'Butterfly' and of course, her typical wanna-be aunties walli angrezi language. When I started this book, I was sitting in my university's library and I had to move out since I could not control my frequent bursts of laughter at her 'incorrect' English and her 'anyone who's anyone'and her general use of those silly yet somehow cool words that you want to repeat yourself.

As Mohsin said her self, the book is light but not shallow and highli...more

This is the first book I read from this author and it made me seek out her earlier book 'The End of Innocence' which is a very different one from the book I'm currently going to talk about. I was hoping it would be kind of the same and was a bit disappointed to note that it was more of the serious types (I don't know why!) but glad the author came up with a sequel to this fabulous read.

'The Diary of a social butterfly' by Moni Mohsin, one of Pakistan's most celebrated columnists is a humorous s...more

The author communicates to the readers at two different levels .. firstly portraying the geo-political history of the world (and Pakistan) during the critical period of 2001 till 2008 ... and secondly presenting the 'vain' outlook of a typical subcontinent socialite and the ppl around her ... !
Although it is a collection of Moni's (much loved) column from TFT ... the book in totality is a interesting (but a bit draggy after the point) read!

I think this would definitely be a winner with anyone who has spent any time in that milieu in Lahore. Pretty enjoyable even for me, though I have no experience of that world. I actually only read the book because I used to know the author at school, when she was definitely the most amusing girl in my year. Lots of fun, but not stupid - the book, I mean, and also the girl.

Hilarious would be an understatement for this epic tale. Moni Mohsin, with wit dripping from every word, describes a up-market, Pakistani elite lady and her take on the various happenings in her life and her nation. Her style of writing reminds me of Chandril Bhattacharya and Sanjib Chakroborty!

I would actually give it a little less than 3 stars. I didn't like the read much because of its sheer monotony. the style of narration remains unaltered from the first page to last and also the political satire in some chapters is only reflected in the headlines.

I remember enjoying the book in its frivolousness but I can hardly recall the story. Told in a convincing socialite style, the purported bloopers got old after the first 20 pages. I shudder to think of how many people I thought of as I read the book...

Her country suffers turmoil after turmoil but butterfly remains unfazed as long as no one disturbs the parties. As long as her social life is alive, she is fine.

This is an extraordinarily funny book... I absolutely loved it and believe that it will prove to be entertaining to every Pakistani who would read it... :D

Hilarious! The diary is a compilation of the authors columns in a weekly magazine. As fun as the columns individually were the book manages to maintain a rhythm and leave the reader in fits without getting monotonous.

What a suprise! The first book by the author. I neede something lighter after the Indian Summer and this fit the bill. Very light, yes, highly entertaining, yes, but still somehow more than just some frivolous pakistani chick lit.

And I have admire the writer's ability to write wrong. In the afterword she wrote that really she has heard the expressions used and sometimes I can see them spoken in my head (I did live in India for a while) and they seem "true". And few of the styles of expression s...more

Hilarious, yet thought provoking overlook at the so called elite social class of the Pakistani politics, from the POV of a complete airhead, who has her moments of sudden clarity.

Though absolutely hilarious there isn't much of a plot to it. Between laughing fits I kept waiting for something to happen and not much did.

Definitely worth a read though.

In the words of the Social Butterfly(yes, there can be only one of her kind)"Oh baba!Such a tabahi book!I tau just loved it!"
Hifza
I loved it! it was really funny, mostly because of butterfly's ignorant attitude and horrible English.
Sowmya

this book is about a pakistani socialist.Ought to read once.

Very, very funny parody of a certain type of Pakistani woman, caught up in a socialist, I mean, her closeted social life! When you read it, you'll know just how 'socialist' she is!

It also runs concurrent to a commentary on worldwide events impacting on Pakistan that is quite intriguing.

Very easy to read. Highly recommended.
Sadaf
Light, funny, relatively intelligent and scarily familiar.

What cheeks! I tau completely unjoyed this book! Moni Mohsin....kameeni jaisi!

Not a book to be read in one sitting. Otherwise you run a risk of getting bored. Pick it up whenever you feel like you need to laugh.

Amazingly hilarious book! The kind of humour that while makes your insides tickle, it makes you a bit hesitant to laugh out loud, resulting in the subsequent laughter to come out in chokes! A wonderful sense of self-deprecating humour used by the author that I'm sure people familiar with the society depicted in the book will appreciate.
