This is an amaaaazing book. A social history of the word motherfucker, it winds up really being a social history of black culture in America. It goes through slave times, juke-joint culture, blues, jive, riots, protests, and more, plus has individual chapters on Richard Pryor and Lenny Bruce, sections about Hustler's Jerry Falwell mock-ad, Samuel L. Jackson (who, when asked by an interviewer what the 'L' in his name stands for, answered "Motherfucker!"), Oedipus, playing the dozens, MILFs, mothe...more

My brother gave this book to our mom on Mother's Day. She hasn't read it yet, but I have dibs when she's done.
Don't let the name scare you. This is a well researched interesting slice of cultural history.
