For young children the concept of slavery might be hard to initially relate to and understand. This book does a wonderful job of breaking down what it means to be a slave, and how Fredrick Douglas help to ensure the freedom of all African American's in America. I love that the book provides a glossary at the end of words that might be hard for young students to understand. These words I would include on a word wall to build vocabulary throughout the unit.
