Miranda's Beach Day
by
Holly Keller
What makes a perfect beach day?
Seagulls squawking through the sky. A crab carrying his house. And Miranda and her friends, building a castle out of sand.
But at the end of a day at the beach, the seagulls go back to their nests, the crab goes back to the sea, the castle goes back to the sand . . . and Miranda goes back to Mama, who wraps her up in a hug when it's time

My heart will always belong to At the Beach by Anne Rockwell--and it's a crime that it's out of print.
But this could easily take second place in my favorite beach stories.
It's a little more complicated than Rockwell's book, but still accessible to 2 and 3 year olds--and older kids as well--and it has the same wonderful feel of a real beach day.

First off, the illustrations are perfect beach art, and the best part. As for the story...
Miranda and her mother go to the beach.
Miranda and her mother make stupid comments about said beach.
Miranda and her mother make cliche comments that liken the beach to their relationship.

I really liked how the prints were incorporated into the watercolors, but the text was extremely simple and predictable. And not like predictable in a help-you-learn-to-read way. But in a I'm-so-bored-I-could-suddenly-develop-narcolepsy way.
This is a nice picture book about a day at the beach, with a cold ocean, fun waves and beautiful sand castles that are oh so fleeting in their existence. The watercolors and collage combine well to make this picture book a joy to read.
Miranda goes to the beach, theres a castle, there are waves you finish the story.... Ages 3+
Very sweet. Illustrations are a cool blend of watercolor and printed collage.
Not much happens in this quiet story, but it's a pleasant read.
Good for people that want a beach story or sand castle story.
