I can't believe I'm saying this again but...if I had known that this was a Christian romance with a lot of Christian preaching, I don't know if I'd have read this book. I liked the story and the romance well enough but the preaching bothered me enough that I don't know if I will read any other books by this author unless it was free as this one was.

I don't think I have said this in a while, so I am allowed to say it again right...Tracie Peterson is an amazing author! After a few months of not being able to read, this book was a great one to start back up with. I finished it in two sittings as I could not put it down! It was mostly an historical romance novel with a splash of mystery and suspense thrown in to keep you turning the page.

Just about the time I start thinking, "Why did I get another historical fiction book?" I open up Tracie Peterson's new book "Dawn's Prelude" and get absolutely swept away in an amazing story! I totally loved this book! There is something for everyone (romance, adventure and a little suspense) and fans of historical fiction will add this book to their most loved shelf.

I had to really think about what rating this book should get. The first fifty pages and the last 75 to 100 pages were decently written, worth at least a three but the rest of the book was boring and one dimensional. The plot itself was sort of interesting, while not a mystery, since you knew whodunit, the bad guys were so malicious you just had to find out how bad they would really be but in the safety of a Christian novel where everything always turns out just fine. That to me is at least wo...more
Oh, let's see... On a personal note, it amuses me greatly to see such varied opinions on the same book.
I don't remember why I picked this up. It might have been on my to-read list because someone recommended it. The cover is really pretty, though most Christian historical novels are starting to look the same.

This story was truly fabulous in every way. I sensed the peril and the helplessness the characters experienced as much as I felt the tenderness and love. This is probably Tracie's best book yet. Her plotting is sheer perfection and the pace was satisfying. There was a suspenseful element to the story that made me not want to sleep until the situation was resolved and the people were safe. There was a secondary character that was compassionate, too. I worried for her and her lifeless marriage and...more
So, here's the deal. If you like Janette Oke-type books, you will probably enjoy this one. However, it is a bit darker and deals with some heavier issues.
This is my beef with these types of books. If you are going to do something like this, make it somewhat believable. Don't tell me things like the main character slept through all of her first labor, or that she, through a knock on her head, has no idea that she birthed a child mere weeks before. There are tell-tale signs of thi...more

Let me start out by saying 5 out of 5 stars!!!!
I absolutely loved this book, it truly exceeded my expectations!
But first, let me start with a summary.
The book is set in the late 1800s and begins shortly after the death of Lydia Gray's husband. She is young, only 28, and now a widow with several stepchildren who have never liked her. In fact, not only did her husband beat and abuse her, her stepchildren have made it their personal mission to make her suffer as much...more

Free Kindle download. I liked this OK except for the fact that the heroine's "step" family are really awful people, unrealistically so. I just have a hard time believing that they could be so cruel to her, especially as they too were victims to the abuse that their father — her husband — doled out. You'd think there'd be some empathy between them all, kind of a shared feeling and experience, or at worst, maybe indifference in an effort to forget the abuse and leave it all behind.

What a disappointment! This book started out and ended better than your average "Christian Brides of..." novel but in the middle the author forgot she was writing a novel and decided to switch to a cheesy melodramatic soap opera script instead. I could hardly hold down my supper when she started writing all that ridiculous "will to live" crapola and said to myself, "hey, why not just give her amnesia and a brain tumor while you are at it." Okay so they didn't giv...more
I loved this book I got hooked on this series and read them all. A great christian story and back during that time it was okay to marry at that age which is not really young if you think farther back in history they were marrying of their girls at the age of 12-14 to start having babies because children tend not to survive so they would try to have as much as they can. I love how they show the character coming to God and to show how her path though may have started out really bad ended up being ...more

Lydia had endured too much for being a wife. Her husband beat her, but he did not love her he only wanted power and wealth.
When he died, she felt relieved and free until the step sons talked to her. They wanted her out of their lives so they could run their father's businesses and sale his house.
When she inherited everything from her father, who was the husband's business partner, they were disappointed. Mad.

let me begin with a nice snobby opinion -- anyone who has written eighty adult-length books (and is not, say, 140 years old) is not generally going to write literature of much quality. so when i flipped this one open and saw the extensive title list of novels by this author, i set my sights a bit lower than usual.

First let me mention about how much I love the cover of this book, the coloring especially is just to die for it is so pretty. So far almost every historical fiction that I have read from Tracie Peterson I have enjoyed and this one is no different on that enjoyment scale. It may not be as non stop fabulous as the Yukon Quest, but it in a different manner it is better at the same time. Reading the book blurb as an expectant reader you can assume certain things of the plot line and story to occur ...more
What a delightful book! I really enjoyed reading the story of Lydia Sellers and her life's journey from evil to love, kindness, family and God.
There are strong, loveable characters like kjell and evil ones like Marston and the Surdiov brothers.
Lydia's story gets you routing for the good guys from the beginning and keeps you interested and excited through the end.

This is the first of the series, Song of Alaska. Lydia is newly widowed and fights her inlaws for her rightly own heritage. She flees to Alaska on a harrowing trip to be with her Aunt Zee. She ends up "falling" for Kjell, but it is further complicated when she discovers she is pregnant with her dead husband's baby after having miscarried and lost several children. This is a wonderful story full of adventure, loss, love and faith in God and the future.
This was one of the best Tracie Peterson book that I have read, it was a hard to put down book.
Dawn's Prelude was different than other books that I had read by this author with a new twist and
so much action and intrigue. I was so glad to find out that this is a series, and am searching for
the 2nd one in this series at my library. This is at the top of my book list and I would recommend
this to anyone, you won't be disappointed.

At 16 Lydia was forced into an arranged marrage by her greedy father. When her abusive husband is killed in a carriange accident along with her father, Lydia is relieved. She sees this as a chance to start a new life and plans to move to Alaska to be with her aunt; however, her wicked stepchildren won't leave her alone. When her plans go terribly wrong, Lydia newly found faith in God is tested.
Pretty typical Tracie Peterson formula however, as a Tracie Peterson fan I simply loved the book. I love the setting of Alaska and I'm hoping that eventually one of her books will be made in to at the very LEAST a hallmark movie produced and directed by Michael Landon. I think the best series of hers is The Heirs Of Montana. Looking forward to the next novel in this series coming in March 2010.
This is a typical Tracie Peterson book. If you like her other stuff you'll most likely enjoy this novel. The character and plot development was strong and I was also able to quickly read it. It wasn't my favorite book of hers (The Yukon Quest series is still my favorite)but it was good and worth the read. I'm looking forward to where she takes the series with book #2!
This book did not tell you about Alaska to any extent. It could have taken place anywhere. I found it amateurish and inconsistent. Also of the Christian books I've read, it is one of the most repetetive of the lessons the author wishes to stress. In its inconsistencies, a man who is a known murderer is investigated for kidnapping without being arrested for the murder and attempted murder he has committed.
I like historical fiction. The story intrigued me because much of it took place in Alaska. liked the story line itself. What I didn't know at the time i got it was that it is a "Christian fiction" book. Not really an issue but skipped through some passages that went on about turning to God, praying more, etc.
Much better than previous Peterson books I've read. It's the story of a young woman, who travels to Alaska to live with her aunt, after her husband and father are killed. There's mystery and intrigue as she continues to fight her greedy step-children and love when she meets a loving, Christian man.
