Hard to really give a book on true crime stars at all. It is sometimes good to read about real crimes to remind ourselves that it truly is a scary place out there and you can never be too careful. The evil in mankind never ceases to amaze.

The blood is beginning to run thin in the Ann Rule's Crime Files series, in which annually she trots out one new case at novella length along with four or five short pieces from the 1960s and 1970s when she wrote prolifically for true-crime magazines.

The centerpiece story is about Chuck Leonard and Teresa Gaethe-Leonard, a Snohomish County, Wash. couple whose marriage hit the rocks in the mid-'90s and ended in the shooting murder of Chuck, a much-loved school counselor. Teresa was f More...

A typical Ann Rule book. She is a great true crime writer. This book has several cases that I had not heard about. I downloaded this to my computer so there were no pictures but... I will get the book from the library to put faces to the names. This book does cover the deceit by the people you trust. Be careful... you never know what lies in the mind of another. Strangers are just as deadly and one moment can change your life forever. If it had taken a moment longer to get ready for work More...

I enjoy reading books about peoples lives and the things they do. Ann Rule has a way of getting into the minds and emotions of the very people she is writing about. This book is separated by four different stories of four different lives, the only thing that disappointed me a little about this book was one of the stories was not resolved as in the killer was never found. Even in reading reality I still was hoping for an ending that would make me feel justice was served.
Other than that it More...

Ann Rule never disappoints me, her cases always horrify and fascinate me. I think the best thing about her cases is they are ones not in the national spotlight, most happened many years ago and without her books we usually wouldn't be aware of them unless we were personally touched in some way by them. A few of the stories near the end were only touched on lightly. The very last one Dark Forest: Deep Danger should of been a whole book unto itself, very frightening and cries out to be explored o More...

This collection doesn't seem to live up to its title, but there are still some interesting cases in it. Most of the cases take place in the western part of the US in either Washington state or Oregon.

Two of the cases are unsolved, but the rest have endings. The first case is rather interesting since it was the woman who was the killler, not the male. There's also a story involving a boat, and two teenagers who were attacked by a former marine.

True crime buffs and Anne Rule fans won't be disappoi More...

Another true crime book, I'm a real sucker for them. Ann Rule is one of my favorite true crime authors and this is one of her multi-case books from her crime files. She worked as a detective in Seatle, Washington prior to becoming an author.

The main story in this book is about a woman who murders her husband so she can marry her rich boyfriend who lives in Hawaii. Then there is a story about a family that disappeared over Labor Day weekend in 1974 and one about a swinger who get More...

By Bookworm (St. George Utah) - See all my reviews

Most of Ann Rule's books could be utilized by any theological group as a hand-book for "The Seven Deadly Sins". With "BUT I TRUSTED YOU" most of the crimes committed in the seven stories covered seem to focus on the evils of GREED and LUST coupled with too much trust.

If this book is any indication, it would appear that Washington state is not a More...

Overall, an OK book. I usually enjoy true crime novels, but this just seemed to lack a lot of depth and I noticed numerous spelling and grammatical errors! I felt like it was dashed off in in an attempt to fulfill some deadline. I also felt that Anne Rule kept repeating herself in order to fill up space instead of really giving us new and different insight into the criminals as the stories progressed. I was just hoping for something a bit more... It is an easy read but one that I might save More...

Beach Vacation Read #7: Found in small cache of books hidden in shadows of floor shelf of low cabinet on Day 13 of sixteen-day vacation. What is with this beach house? Do the owners never read?

Sensational and overwrought and, despite the recent publication date, has a strong feeling of being terribly dated. DNF.

I used to like Ann Rule very much. I liked the way her books were not "just" true crime books. She used to do an excellent job at describing real people, the good and the bad, and her writing used to be good. Unfortunately, little by little she seems to be getting somewhat prudish and judgmental. It might be age, it might be having seen too much ugliness, it might be that she used to have a better editor. I have not checked whether she used a new editor for this book, but the overall q More...

But I Trusted You is the fourteenth volume in author Ann Rule's "Crime Files" series, where she takes a novel length case, makes it the main focus of the book and throws in several "smaller" type cases as well. As much as I have enjoyed Ms. Rule's previous efforts, But I Trusted You left me wanting and a bit disappointed.

Let's start with the feature length case, which concerns the murder of teacher Chuck Leonard by his estranged wife Teresa. I personally did n More...

I love true crime stories, and I have found that Ann Rule's writing is certainly my style. She gives all the facts as well as some theories where necessary, but doesn't reach too far. I hate that whenever you hear a crime story on the news, you only hear one part of it. Crimes take time to solve and by the time they get all the information it is usually old news and not put back out for the public to see. I hate getting interested in something and never finding out how it ended, so these stories More...

Living in King County, WA, Ann Rule's books hit close to home. I know the areas where these crimes have taken place. The first story in this novel, "But I Trusted You" is the most recent of the crimes told in this novel. The other crimes were all committed in the mid-seventies. Even though the crimes took place long ago, it's still unnerving knowing there are still criminals out there, today, committing similar gruesome crimes.

I didn't find this one as interesting as previous Ann Rule books; not really sure why (and I feel kind of bad saying that someone's true story wasn't interesting enough for me). But, as always, Rule is a good writer, sympathetic to the victims, but still stating the facts/events clearly.

Interesting but not very complete. You could tell the author was doing research but didn't have enough for a book, and so combined several cases into one book. Well written and researched and this author is great at the true crime genre, however, the cases weren't very well known and were quite a while ago, so didn't seem all that fascinating.

Although the subject matter of these crime cases was terrible and sometimes shocking, I thought the writing was good. 7 cases were presented, trusting in others the central idea for the author. I can see why Rule is acclaimed as one of the best true crime writers in the U.S.

Fascinating to read true crime cases. Some of the stories left me feeling uneasy especially when reading at 1am in the morning. The first story played out like a Law and Order episode as it went through the trial as well. All in all a quick read.

Not really my kind of thing so I didn't really like it. It was kind of like watching the true crime shows on TV. And it was depressing to think of how many crimes like this take place and how many sick people there are.

Rule is one of my "go-to" authors. Always good. Interesting treatment of old true crime cases following her usual format of one longer story with several shorter ones. The longer story was not particularly intriguing but the other stories more than made up for it. Looking forward to her full length book in the spring.

So far I'm not finding the author to be a great writer. Her background in police work shows by the type of detail she shares. These true stories tell themselves. They're very interesting.

This book makes you more cautious about watching circumstances and the motivations of others. Ann Rule definetely writes true crime that not only entertains and informs but also cautions.

I love true crime, but these stories were repetitive and the writing poor (and infused with the authors comments/observations). This author has a ton of books and I might try one more to see if this one was just off - maybe!

I just love this sick and twisted stuff. Who are these people? These stories made me nice and paranoid... it won't last long, though. In my mind, these people exist far, far away from me and everyone I love.
