the first in matt love's beaver state trilogy, grasping wastrels vs. beaches forever inc. is a slim collection of essays tracing the nearly century old battle for the oregon coast. from former governor oswald west's 66-word 1913 law declaring that our beaches shall forever remain public, to the current, ongoing fights to develop (destroy?) coastal land, the book is part well-researched history lesson and part passionate entreaty. while oregon was unique among other states in its progressive visi ...more

Great book about the fight to keep the Oregon Coast free for the people. Well researched and annotated saga of the players (good and bad) who left a lasting impression on one of the most beautiful coastlines of the United States. I am a wee bit biased because this is my home. This book has taken an already motivated conservationist and preservationsist (me!!!) and has lit a bigger fire under me to get more in the know to protect this land for our future enerations. We will always be guests here ...more

This book of essays by Matt Love is both entertaining and exasperating. The entertaining part is Mr. Love's take on the history of protecting Oregon's coastal lands. His opinionated stand is refreshing and often amusing. But it is exasperating to realize how much better Oregonians could have been about protecting our coast, and how much more work there still is to do. It is a fast read and well worth the time.

fantastic read for a rainy weekend on the oregon coast! the author challenges the readers: wouldn't it be awesome to have a park on the coast named after you...then make it happen.
