Amelia wants a dog, specifically a small brown dog with a wet pink nose. But her parents don’t think they are ready for a dog. At first, Amelia tries begging every day. When that doesn’t work, she begins to ask different questions. What could the dog’s name be? Where would he live? If he got lost would they look for him? Could Amelia walk and feed him herself? A few days later, Amelia imagines that she has a dog like the one she dreams of. She makes sure he can’t escape out the door, pla More...

I have always said that the secret to successful parenting is bribery. Of course, if I'd had a child anything close to Amelia in A Small Brown Dog with a Wet Pink Nose, I would have to rethink my parenting strategies.

This is a laugh out-loud fun book that parents will enjoy reading as much as their children will enjoy hearing it!

Amelia is desperate to get a dog. But whenever she asks her parents if they can get one, she is always told "no". But Amelia finds a More...

Very fresh take on the I-want-a-dog story! Great illustrations. Nice also to see the author do another good job at such a different story than Elizabeti's Doll.

All Amelia wants is a small, brown dog with a wet, pink nose. However, her parents insist that their family just isn't ready for a dog. So Amelia imagines one up and has a ball with him until one day he goes missing. Convincing her parents he's lost, she leads them to the animal shelter where she conveniently finds her small, brown dog with a wet, pink nose--for real! The story was adorable, but I did find myself confused at times by the illustrations--which direction do we read? The divisions b More...

Really an adorable book. I originally withheld a five star rating because of the very clever yet clear use of manipulation by the child and the lack of intelligence portrayed by the parents. Yes, Mr. Guggisburg, wherever you are, I remember all those lectures about willingly suspending my beliefs, and in that spirit, I totally loved this book and children will too. The text is clever, the illustrations are adorable and fun, most especially Bones, the "imaginary" dog. This book is nomin More...

Amelia really wants a dog, and she knows just what he is going to look like. Unfortunately, her parents don't feel the same. Persistence is Amelia's middle-name as she tries some tricky methods to keep reminding her parents of her desire. Eventually she hatches a very elaborate yet effective trap that her parents can't find a way out of. Simple yet cute illustrations back-up this clever little story of a young girl's determination to have her very own puppy.

I didn't really like this one. Maybe that's because the whole time I knew this girl was being conniving and sneaky. Sure she was cute while she did it. And it was funny to see where it was going. But I wouldn't want to encourage my children to be sneaky. Then again, maybe this book is a lesson to parents to watch what you say.

The format of the illustrations started off all right, and I did like some of the humor. But by the end of the book, I was tired of it. Still, I think I could More...

Rather than begging or pleading, Amelia adopts an imaginary dog named Bones. But when Amelia's make-believe pup runs away, her parents are in for a real surprise!

This is one manipulative, clever girl who knows what she wants and gets it. This is more suitable for kindergarten/early elementary children. The endpapers are among the best part of the book for me. The text and illustrations dispell any doubt about whether Amelia knew what she was doing.

A young girl wants a dog very badly, but her parents are against the idea so she hatches a plan to imagine a lost dog and then lose it -- all to get her parents to end up buying her imaginary dog she lost.

Clever book for the child in all of us who do not want to take no for an answer.

This is pretty much a child's guide to tricking your parents into getting you a dog. Amelia, the heroine, master of emotional manipulation, creates an imaginary dog and then "loses" him so that she can get a real dog.

Remind me to try this method out on Jeff.

This wonderfully illustrated book also has a great message (or sort of at least) about making things up-- for Amelia she makes up her imaginary dog and tricks her parents into getting her the real thing. Interesting twist.

A fun little story. However, some of the kids didn't seem to catch on that she tricked her parents. I think it could have been made a little more clear. But for the kids that did catch on it was a hit.

Our first- and second-graders write "how to" books. This one would be a great, fun example for how to get your parents to let you get a dog! It was a three-star book for me, but the ending punched it up. Cute.

Very cute. However, this falls into the "isn't it cute when children manipulate their parents and parents fall for it" sort of family life. And frankly I see enough of that among my patrons!

A sneaky little girl (she's not supposed to be sneaky, but I think she is) connives (oops, there I go again) her way into getting a puppy. Just the right puppy.

When her parents won't buy her a dog, she invents an imaginary brown dog with a pink nose and then turns the hypothetical dog into the real deal. PreK- Grade 1.

Note to all children: When you really, really want something badly, simply make an imaginary version of it, and take care of it, maybe your folks will think it's so adorably cute that you just may get it for real! That's what Amelia did in this charming tale that is filled with busy illustrations (even some real doggie photos) and a simple plot, that will make just about anybody laugh and say "Awwww, what a cute idea."

Amelia is a precocious little thing that I hope we're going to see more of. She knows just how to work her parents to get exactly what she wants. But she also shows she knows how to care for a pet along the way. Very cute and fun illustrations that read a bit like a scrapbook. The story seemed to just flow from beginning to end and I really enjoyed it and think elementary students will too.
