At first I was like "OH NO, I think this will not have much of a plot and no realistic and believable character development because at first it went like Riana got convicted on some 'insignificant crime' then dropped off in the prison planet HOLD, someone advised her she must get the strongest guy to protect her form the 'horrible animals(prisoners)' at Hold but in exchange of that she must give the man she chose 'sexual pleasure and she saw Cain, they had like a 'mutual understanding' of some...more

This is the first book by Zannie Adams that I've read and I'm not sure if I would read anymore. I know this is an erotic romance but there was just way too much sex and not enough story,imo. I never thought I would ever say that though. lol

This story takes place in the future and off planet. They are in another galaxy.

Ok…first get past the cover…I think it is awful. I am thinking this is a cheesy erotic novel but it was in my recommendations so I thought I would give it a try.

This is totally an erotica but it has a really good story line…very interesting.

So this book is set in the future where there are many planets that are inhabited. In this galaxy…trespassing is the same crime level as murder. A crime is a crime. All prisoners go to a prison planet…All prisoners, male or female.

This is the first sentence in the book, and it sets the tone for the following story.

Rianna is a new prisoner on the prison planet Genus 6. In this universe, the Coalition sentences every convicted criminal to life on a prison planet, regardless of the crime. This particular planet is covered with a sea that is poisonous to humans. The facility itself is located beneath the deadly...more "Find the strongest man there. This is the first sentence in the book, and it sets the tone for the following story.

Rianna is a new prisoner on the prison planet Genus 6. In this universe, the Coalition sentences every convicted criminal to life on a prison planet, regardless of the crime. This particular planet is covered with a sea that is poisonous to humans. The facility itself is located beneath the deadly waters, so even if the prisoners managed to overtake the guards, they still couldn't escape. (Rura Penthe, anyone? Bonus points if you get the reference.)

The prisoners are all housed together in the Hold. Individual holding cells do not exist. Privacy does not exist. All food and supplies are fought over and claimed by the strongest. Toilet facilities are shared by all.

Upon being dumped in the Hold by the leacherous guards, Rianna is immediately molested by her fellow new arrival. Once she fends him off, the other denizens of the Hold make themselves known. The arrogant alpha male makes a point of telling her and everyone around that he'll take her in if she gives him what he wants. She looks to an alternative, a lone man with his own bed and toilet, which are enclosed in his private cell. The ONLY enclosed cell left existing in the whole place. To Rianna, that means he is the strongest in the Hold, the only man able to claim and keep his own private shelter. After a moment's indecision, Cain chooses to fight for her and keeps her to himself.

From there, the story follows Rianna's adjustment to her new life, as a prisoner, as a target to other prisoners, and a companion to Cain. And it is only a companionship in my estimation. We hear Rianna's thoughts on her situation, and she wishes for Cain to see her as more than a release for his sexual tension. This comes across more as neediness than any real emotional attachment; more like that weird intimacy that is said to develop in such tension-filled situations. At times, she pines away like a teenager, wondering if he really likes her or not. Does he really want me for me or because I'm convenient?

When Rianna realizes that Cain is preparing to make an escape attempt, she freaks out, fearing for her own well-being without Cain's help. I understood her reaction, but I found myself annoyed with her. If he has a chance to leave, why should he abandon it just for her? He's been there longer! And that should tell you about my emotional attachment to this character, which equals zero.

I don't know how I feel at the end of this story. I could completely understand the attachment that they developed as prisoners who could only trust each other. But to be told that eight months after their escape, they are just so deeply in love...I couldn't buy into it. There's just not any development of a romance for me. The only POV given is Rianna's, and she reeks of desperation and neediness. I am glad to see that they stayed together, though.

Despite my complaints, it's still an enjoyable read. If you are looking for another read with this sort of theme, I strongly recommend Blood Moons by Alianne Donnelly.

As for this story, 2.5 stars.(less)

When I bought this one I just needed something to stir me out of my reading funk and give me something different from my usual reads...and this one did just that.

When I bought this one I just needed something to stir me out of my reading funk and give me something different from my usual reads...and this one did just that.

Cain was just so yummy. He was so mysterious in the beginning and through much of the middle. Though he was put in this horrid place he still retained much of his humanity and morals of what was right and wrong. He was gentle with Riana where as if the other inmates had got their hands on her she would've been used and abused... over and over. Cain protected her, fed her, fought for her, and took care of her needs. It was all very... alpha and animalistic... and I couldn't quit reading, I devoured it.

Cain and Riana quickly build a routine and relationship that was scorching hot as well as a little sweet. Though there really isn't any swoony, mushy-gushy moments, that was okay because you could tell Cain and Riana were falling in love despite their surroundings, lack of privacy (even during sex), desperate conditions, and trying to find a way off this prison planet.

Riana had picked the right man in those first minutes in the Hold. If she'd picked anyone else to protect her, to give her body to, her life would have been utterly different. She wouldn't have had this future. She wouldn't have Cain.

Overall this was a really good book and I'm so glad there was a HEA for these two. It's definitely a sci-fi romance for my favorite shelves. The only complaint I may have is I wished it was longer, I wanted more of Cain and Riana.

Upon entering the prison Riana is advised by one of the guards to find the strongest man there and give herself to him as payment for his protection.

So from the description of the book I was very keen and excited to read this. It looked like an interesting plot, a women trying to survive in a dangerous futuristic prison and obviously there was going to be a guy and some romance going on, I thought it was going to be a good book from other reviews that I had read. I couldn't have been more wrong. The start was good and the story was very bleak and dark, just my kind of thing, then Riana meets Cain the imprisoned guy she gives herself to for protection and the story turns into some kind or porn with the plot as a side story. I was fed up reading about all the times they had sex and in what position and who was watching. I was looking forward to one or two hot sex scenes after being teased into a frenzy by the author but this just wasn't the case. I also didn't like the language Ms Adams used. Don't get me wrong I am not against swearing in fact I have a bad potty mouth myself but I felt it was inappropriate. I also didn't think this language fitted with the type of character that Riana was being portrayed as. I so wanted Ms Adams to concentrate on the promising plot rather than how good Cain was at thrusting. There was very little Sci-Fi in this book and I nearly gave up on it a couple of times. I really don't like giving a negative review for a book, and please note that this is my honest opinion, as I mentioned earlier I have seen a lot of reviews for this book where people really liked it, however it just wasn't for me. I am going to give this book 1 star out of 5.(less)

This story was so enthralling I couldn't even put it down. To finish reading the story was was almost an obsession it seemed. Of course when it did end I was disappointed because I didn't want it to end. Riana was told to give herself(as in sex slave) to the strongest guy in the hold for protection after being accused of committing a minor infraction of the company she worked for's rules and was thrown into their prison for life. It was okay but I was somewhat disappointed. The sci fi element was not very strong. There was a lot of sex and I'm not against sex scenes in their place but here they overwhelmed the story. I think the author missed the boat on making the hold so dark. It was so stark and bare down there that there wasn't much for our hero and heroine to do so the story lacked any real action plot. The hero's character is by far the most intriguing. **spoilers** He's a good guy in a bad place, a prison hold. Makes me think of an apocalyptic world, but it's not. It's a survival of the fittest. Rena is a woman unprepared to deal with the horrible place she finds herself in. She will be dead in a weak if she doesn't find someone to be her protector. She choose Cain, the loner, and finds the man of her dreams--not at first. he may not seem like a good guy in the beginning. But he is.

This book was darker than most, but it truly sucked me in. Set a futuristic prison planet where it's every inmate for herself; what's a girl to do? He watched her with mild interest when she was dropped into the Hold. And although he is a loner, he likes her spirit and drive, so he stakes his claim on her. Having been a prisoner for more than a year and completely alone, he decides she would satisfy his physical needs at the very least.

In this unusual world of violence and danger Riana and Cain start to live together and end up liking each other, at first only physically but in the end their feelings involve love. It immediately clicks physically between them: when they’re having sex many orgasms are involved. These scenes are pretty hot and sweet at the same time. And they do have sex a lot, because what else can they do during these endless days of imprisonment. But Cain is also working on some sort of device with which he plans to escape the Hold. Zannie Adams put a little bit of extra suspense in the story with that. But the attraction of this story was mostly in the way these two kind people evolved in their relationship that started out with total dependency on Riana’s part and cold-heartiness on Cain’s part. With the growing of their feelings of love, their insecurities grow as well, because of the situation they are in. A situation that’s hardly suitable for romance, of course.

Zannie Adams knows how to dose the elements of her story. The plot is exciting and perfectly paced, not too slow, not too fast, just right. And her characters are portrayed well, so it’s impossible not to feel for them or fall in love with them. She tells the story solely through Riana’s eyes. I would have liked to read from Cain’s perspective once or twice, but I understand that that would have killed a little bit of the suspense of the story. Ms. Adams wrote a few contemporary erotic romances and I’m definitely gonna give them a try, because Hold was really a great first acquaintance with her work!(less)

This was a very interesting read for me. It went beyond an erotic romance novel. It showed what happed when there is a total breakdown of rules and society amongst people. When we are forced to live like animals and only the strong survive. It was chilling to believe that people can degrade to that level of depravity.

I'm pleasantly surprised. I found this book on the 'read' bookshelf of the SFR group. EC sometimes comes out with titles I enjoy - Anne Calhoun's "Liberating Lacey" comes to mind. This one did not resonant as strongly with me emotionally, but it was well done all the same.

Apart from being too short (I would have loved to read more!!) I thoroughly enjoyed this little book. While 'Hold' is most definitely classified as erotica, this story actually had, well a story to go with all those deliciously naughty bits.

A somewhat sympathetic guard suggests her best hope of survival is to select a "protector" amongst the inmates - which essentially amounts to an exchange of sex for food, shelter and safety - and she does... but instead of going with the peacock male who already has a harem of defenseless victimized females, she opts for the strong quiet guy with the dangerous vibe who accepts her "offer" and claims her as his own.

Initially, Cain (Riana's protector) is gruff, cold and aloof - he doesn't even tell her his name until after they get it on a couple of times - but his feelings for her, if not outright clear, become at least more evident as the weeks pass. By the end of the story, however, there's no doubt as to how he feels about Riana and it's one of the most heartfelt declarations I've yet read.

While told in a third person narrative, we only ever get Riana's point of view in 'Hold'. Normally, I love getting the hero's side of the story, but Adams withholding Cain's perspective from us is positively brilliant! It serves to emphasize the isolation and loneliness of Riana's bleak situation of imprisonment on a prison planet with little to no hope of escape, and it makes it all the more satisfying when we finally get insight into how Cain felt during that time.

Under dire circumstances, Riana and Cain clung to each other to maintain not only their hold on sanity, but also their humanity and fell deeply in love as a consequence. When all was said and done, the naughty bits, which were smokin' hot by the way, were, IMO, just (really good) gravy!

Firstly I really dislike short stories. I feel cheated on anything less than 200 pages, Hold was quite a bit less than that, but its summary really grabbed me so I made an exception. I'm glad I did.

As short as it was it was absolutely the right length. There were parts I would call raunchy and vulgar, yet they were necessary to convey the horror and desperation of the scene. I really liked this book, even though I don't often read futuristic. The hero is head over heels, protective, caring and hot. It's a novella with a HEA. the story: the h gets thrown in jail after a minor offense in a future society. She seeks out the strongest man she feels drawn to in order to trade sex for protection. They become caring companions as well as hot lovers. There is no privacy in this dungeon type jail, so be prepared for some voyeurism.

4.5. I have quibbles, and was actually going to give this a 3.5 but the story/characters have really stayed with me, enough that i started re-reading it. The prison setting is unique for a romance and something I didn't realize was a hook for me.

There's a a lot of sexxoring going on and I can see why some readers are disappointed the plot might not have progressed as much as they'd hoped because of it, but I was okay with it, even if I did agree to a point.

Thank you, Ms. Adams, for writing this book! In my humble estimation, a near perfect futuristic erotica with all the right elements - fluid writing skills, romantic alpha male who's not an ass, spunky heroine who's neither stuck up nor stupid, solid plot line reminiscent of "escape from new york", a futuristic world that's not simply a backdrop for the sex, and of course steamy hot sex scenes that are neither too graphic nor too stilted.

Awesomesauce all around.

The premise of this novella seemed different, a new author for me, well, I just went for it not expecting much for an erotic story, and it turned out to be a very nice read, in spite of the lack of hero POV and the easy getaway.
HERO was protective and introverted but is difficult to categorize since the reader never gets into his thoughts or his past.

GENRE/TONE: futuristic/drama

I'm pleasantly surprised. Once in a blue moon an Ellora Cave imprint has actually a plot (well, more than usually present in erotica ).

I enjoyed this title, even if the story is something I read in other futuristic romance books, like Dark Solstice.

Pretty darn near perfect with the exception of the author's tendency towards repetition and the highly unbelievable breakout scenario. I still loved it and enjoyed the unique premise unlike I've read before. The characters were likable and believable. Cain is one yummy gamma male. I recommend reading this one if you're looking for a quick, hot read.

I really enjoyed this novella, it reminded me of the beginning of the second Chronicles of Riddick movie. But be forewarned, it's more Erotica than Sci-Fi Romance. The science fiction element is very light and really just to set up this prison world they are on. I liked the realistic and gritty quality both to the the Hold itself and to their relationship. Cain wasn't the perfect selfless alpha hero, which I loved. I did feel like some of the ending was a little too easy though. (view spoiler)...more

Brutal and gritty and at first I was not liking that atmosphere. It reminds me of the prison from The Chronicles of Riddick. I liked both Riana and Cain and their interaction felt honest and realistic. This is a simple but good story. Only caveat is that it was too short (my usual issue with shorter books/stories).

This was good. I really liked it a lot as it ticked many of my boxes. Difficult situations, space (Universe), doom and gloom, some hot erotica, action.... Yay!!!

Good story line, good plot. I felt like I was there taking part. Feeling connected to the characters.

Good stuff.

Loved this one! Total alpha hero with a heroine who was tough and did what she had to do. Loved the slow build of feelings and the action at the end was well written. Very good if you are looking for a romance in a completely different setting.
