Alex and Lulu are best friends. That’s because they like a lot of the same things: running, jumping, and swinging at the park. But there are ways in which the duo differ, and when Lulu notes—“We are just SO different”—Alex begins to worry. He wants to play ship’s captain, and she wants to paint. Alex confronts Lulu with the news that they might be dreaded opposites, but she calmly tells him she doesn’t think so. Opposites are things like big and small, wet and dry, slow and fast. Alex and Lulu are best friends, but Alex worries that their differences will ruin their friendship. Lulu finds Alex and reassures him that their differences do not matter as much as the fun they have together.

Great book on friendship and the ability to be different from our friends. The delightful illustrations drew me to this book.

This would be most appropriate for preschoolers. Its about two friends (boy and girl) who play together all the time but they like different things. One friend becomes scared that because they do not like all the same things they will not be friends. Touches on opposites. Cover and pages are thick and matte with beautiful illustrations.

This is perfectly lovely book about being different and still being friends. I really like that this book is well written despite the fact there is an obvious message. I would totally use this book with kids in the library or in the classroom. A wonderful book!

Alex and Lulu by Lorena Siminovich is the story of best friends. Alex is a noisy, adventurous dog and Lulu is an artistic, thoughtful cat. One day Lulu begins to doubt their long standing friendship. It's up to Alex to convince her that they can be different and still be friends.

The book is presented as a colorful book of opposites with the plot of friendship holding the book together. Harriet liked the opposites part of the story and she liked the cute dog and the equally cute cat.

Honestly many young children who are different genders and have different interests really don't feel like they have to understand why they're friends with someone. This book perplexed me - felt it over-analyzed relationships.

Alex and Lulu are different like 'chalk and cheese', but are still best friends. Alex worries that they are too different to be best friends, but Lulu shows him that it's because they are so different that they have so much fun together. The story seems to overanalyse the friendship between the two animals and I'm not sure what audience would appreciate this story.

Adorable story of two friends that don't have a lot of interests in common, but their bond of friendship is so strong that they realize that their differences make their friendship more interesting!
Zack
Cute book and wonderful for showing the concept of opposites. Simple and engaging illustrations. My only complaint is I don't think the binding will hold up long with library use.

Alex begins to doubt his friendship with Lulu because they like different things, but she reassures him.

I like the clear, bold illustrations, but the text is a little too didactic.
Liza
A so-so exploration of differences among friends. The art was not captivating enough for me, and the text was a little too Pollyanna.

Would pair well with Oliver Jeffer's book, Up and Down. It explores the differences between friends.
