This book came highly recommended by Danielle, so I was pretty sure it would be good, but I was surprised at just how good it turned out to be. I’d describe it as a great little read, because it is on the shorter side, but there is nothing little about this book. Night Rescuer packs as much action/adventure, emotional tension and sexual heat into those 200+ pages as many full length novels do, and honestly, it rivals some of the best of the Romantic Suspense genre I’ve ever read.

This book came highly recommended by Danielle, so I was pretty sure it would be good, but I was surprised at just how good it turned out to be. I’d describe it as a great little read, because it is on the shorter side, but there is nothing little about this book. Night Rescuer packs as much action/adventure, emotional tension and sexual heat into those 200+ pages as many full length novels do, and honestly, it rivals some of the best of the Romantic Suspense genre I’ve ever read.

Johnny “Cowboy” Hollister believed he had nothing left to live for. His last mission as commander of the Wolf Pack, an elite special ops squad, had gone about as bad as a mission could go, and eight of his men had lost their lives due to what he believed was his own negligence. He was just about to slip a noose around his neck in an attempt at restitution, when fate interrupted him by stepping through the doors of Pirate Pete’s Delivery Service in the form of one very beautiful Melina Montez. Momentarily sidetracked from his suicide plan – but not completely derailed, Johnny decides to find out exactly what this lovely interruption is in need of.

Melina Montez has a problem. Her family has been taken hostage by a very bad Peruvian drug lord named Huayar. To get them back she has to provide him with information about a new drug she’s created as part of a government program to stay one step ahead of the drug dealers. By figuring out what the next hot drug on the streets will be, over the counter medications which contain components of that drug can be regulated before they becomes a problem. So she heads to Pirate Pete’s and asks to have herself shipped to Peru where she plans, unbeknownst to Johnny, to meet Huayar and exchange her life for the lives of her family.

It’s not until they are well on their way that Johnny learns the truth about why Melina is going to Peru, and even longer before she learns that Pirate Pete’s is a front for H.O.T. Watch, an elite group of highly trained men who can go into places most men cannot and get the jobs done that many won’t even touch.

So, bottom line - what we have is a man who believes he has no reason to live, helping a woman who plans to die saving her father, mother and brother who, in Johnny’s opinion, are probably already dead. If that’s not the makings for a truly beautiful happily ever after, I don’t know what is.

I’m looking forward to reading more by this amazing author, Cindy Dees.

There was nothing particularly wrong with this book and I wish I could give it a higher rating because it did have everything I look for in my romances. Including a complex tortured hero, a heroine that wasn’t stupid or useless and tons of action, suspense and adventure in a foreign country. The love scenes are hot too, filled with soul baring looks and a couple that doesn’t play games on their way into bed. They also don’t have a silly clichéd break up towards the end which I appreciated. I can’t put my finger on it but despite everything NIGHT RESCUER just didn’t ever grab my attention. So while I do recommend this to others and won’t rule out reading Cindy Dees in the future, in the end I was left under-whelmed.

We begin with Major John Hollister commander of an elite special ops unit attempting to hang himself in the back storeroom of Pirate Pets delivery service, which is a front for their covert little organization. He is suffering PTSD and has finally reached the end of his rope (pun intended) still reeling and blaming himself for the death of his team a year earlier, His remaining squad has been trying unsuccessfully to reengage him in life but to John he’s guilty times 8, a waste of space and shell of a human being.

John’s personal lynching is interrupted by a woman who needs a package delivered to Lima Peru. She is of course beautiful and there is something in her eyes that matches Johns own tortured, desperate and vacant baby blues. The package as it turns out is Melina herself who is trading herself to a drug dealer in exchange for the release of her family. It is a suicide mission to be sure and who could be better suited to take her to the execution then a man with his own looming death wish. It’s a match made in … a therapists dream. The beginning chapters are really good here, leaving just enough unanswered questions to keep you guessing why our characters are doing and feeling what they are. It’s also darkly funny.

John and Melina catch a charter flight into Peru, each keeping secrets from the other about the intent of this mission. Spending a couple of days in a hotel before they begin their trek into the Peruvian mountains and the drug lord/hostage takers lair. They hop into bed pretty quickly both wanting to feel something before the end. Melina eases John’s pain and John gives Melina hope in love and a future. What she doesn’t realize is that despite their connection John has no intention of coming back from this mission alive.

See what I mean, sounds super good right? And I think for most of you it will be unfortunately it just didn’t work for me.(less)

But me, I wanted to know what could drive this man to want to kill himself. It was a hook for me. And the best thing is, Ms. Dees totally follows through.

Fans of military romance should read this book. If you are a fan of Christine Feehan's GhostWalkers books, and are craving a delicious, but tortured military hero to fall in love with in the wake of the GhostWalkers, I think you would be happy with John Hollister.

John is bent on completing his mission of taking Melina Montez to her rendezvous in the Peruvian arboreal forest. And then, he's going to finish what he started when she came into the courier business that's a front for the HOT Squad, a Special Forces unit that John is assigned to. But this fiesty, sensual, smart, sweet woman is constantly batting at his insistence on ending his life.

Yes, this book has insta-sex, but it totally fits in with this story. You have two people who think their lives are about to end. They want to indulge in their passion for each other, to feel alive, for the short time they have on this earth. I totally felt the chemistry, and why they would get together so quickly, as time ticked away towards their respective appointments with destiny. The love scenes are intense and passionate. Each one showing that bond that made their feelings for each other so special.

I thought the interactions between John and Melina were well written. They had an ease with each other, but they didn't mind getting blunt with each other, and ramming against the barriers each had to accepting that they had choices that involved continuing to fight and to want to live. Melina was so good for John. She helped him to deal with his trauma of being the only survivor from his unit who was ambushed in Afghanistan. It wasn't always comfortable, but she had to try to get through to him, pained that such a good, wonderful man was bent on ending his life.

There's not anything I didn't like about this book. It was fast-moving, entertaining, but emotionally-moving. I couldn't get too mad at John. As Melina said, he was wrapped up in his survivor's guilt, but he was so good about taking care of Melina and committing to keeping her safe. What a man! And Melina is a likeable heroine. She's very smart, very wise, and loving. She's committed to getting her family back, even at the cost of her own life. I loved that she was a scientist, with a doctorate, but she was down to earth, and comfortable in her own skin. Comfortable enough to do the propositioning their first night together.

Let me tell you, Cindy Dees is going on my list. I love these kinds of contemporary romances, high on action, tension, and with a couple that I love and root for to find their happy ending together. If you can find this book, definitely give it a read. It's completely worth it.(less)
