If you are an educator, this is a must read book. Boushey and Moser present an easy and practical way to integrate assessment into daily reading and classroom discussion and activities. The CAFE system is research based and the acronym stands for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expand vocabulary.

This book was truly amazing. The book takes the framework from the Daily Five and provides strategies to be used during one-on-one conferences, small group meetings, and even whole-group lessons. There are many samples of conferences within this book that really allow the reader to fully understand how the conferences flow. The details provided give clear understanding, and I love the fact that every item on the "MENU" is located in the appendix for future reference. This book makes it...more
Really good book that I have recommended to several of my fellow teachers. As a librarian, I can't say that I will put this book into daily practice, but it will help me to know where to turn when asked how to handle a particular reading problem. I loved how the author's taught inference without reading a story to inference from. When you read an entire story, you spend so much time in the story that there isn't much time for inferring. I've heard it said (a lot) that teachers should be teaching reading in small groups that are skill-based rather than simply grouping their students by reading level. This book was amazing! It has absolutely revolutionized my reading instruction. This is a very simple method to improve students' reading ability based on specific need-based strategies (ones readers actually use) rather than level. It is very easy to implement and follow, and the amount of data you have with very little effort is astounding! Absolutely love this model. I went to Tacoma last summer to see the sisters in person and it has changed my whole way of teaching. My students have a common language for talking about reading goals and they each know specifically what he/she is working on. Gone are the days when the whole class worked on one strategy together. Although there is room for whole group instruction with this approach, the CAFE definitely supports differentiated instruction.
Very nice companion to The Daily Five. This book gives you the practical "how-to" process for mini-lessons, strategy groups and conferring with students in a Reader's Workshop environment. They have developed an excellent system for tracking conferences and keeping conferring notes.
This is pretty much the guide book for how to use the Daily 5. I got to see (and implement some) this reading program in action during student teaching and it was awesome but requires dedication because it takes a huge chunk of the school day to implement all the components.
The authors give a very specific explanation of their daily assessment and instruction in reading. The information is practicle and written in an easy-to-understand format for beginning teachers. The strategies they have used in classrooms is shared.
A great addition to Daily 5! It has some great tips for how to assess students while conferencing with them on their reading goals. It gives great examples of what to say in the classroom with the students. It also comes with a CD that has all of the forms needed to set up the notebook needed for progress monitoring. This could work in elementary-middle school classes for sure!

I can't wait to implement these strategies into my 6th grade classroom next year. Now I want to read The Daily 5 for the intermediate grades (I have already read the original Daily 5). These ideas in this book are truly from a teacher's perspective!
This was lent to me by a former colleague/librarian and I devoured it! It provides an approach to teaching reading/literacy that is very practical for K-5. I am eager to apply some of the strategies and ideas within my own classroom.
After my TC summer workshop, I learned that this book was the model that they used for the conferring notebook. It has some great ideas, but again it is all trial by fire. It also gave some great references that you could print out.
Another great resource. In a world where I'm allowed then not allowed, then allowed to do reading workshop this book really reminds me what individual conferences and small groups should look like in my classroom.
Was good and helpful, but more for elementary setting with one class of 30 all day. But still had some good mini-lesson ideas and the organizational structure, which is the main point of CAFE, is useful to think about.
This is a very intriguing system of literacy education by "The Sisters". Our team is considering this for the upcoming school year along with the Daily Five, and I will be interested to see how it works!

Some good ideas. Realistically, won't work with our 48 minute middle school class periods.
