When he discovered that he had only six months to live, thirty-year-old Kevin Bates picked up his pen and wrote The Manual--advice for his five-year-old daughter, Lois, to live by, laugh at, and follow from twelve until thirty. Seven years later, when Lois is given The Manual, she can barely bring herself to read her father's words, the pain of his loss is still so raw. Ye...more

When I started reading this, I thought it would really touch me. And when I read the first journal entries from Lois' dad, I had to fight some tears. But that's it. No more feelings from there on. I dunno what really happened but when I reached page 100 or so I became seriously bored. This book is predictable and nothing really happens. It's like your reading the story of any girl you could know or something like that. Nothing special. Not even the journal entries from her dad. Which, let's be h...more

An jedem...more

Growing up , as you read magazines I don't know if you are like me but I come across all these amazing ideas that when I have children , I eventually want to do and create. One of them is a manual of sorts , written about different things that your child may experience growing up etc , things about yourself at that age . For main character Lois , our novel starts when she is twelve years old and her mother has just remarried the Bingo Guy. Lois can't believe her mum is remarrying since it was on...more

I really wanted to like this book. The truth of the matter is I attempted to read it 3 nights in a row and got through half of it. And then I decided I was wasting my time as I was not vested at all. It is supposed to be about a father who dies of cancer and writes a manual to his growing daughter that she is to read sections of every year on her birthday. Sounds fantastic, right? The problem is how do you write a fast paced chick lit book about every year from elementary school to being thirty...more

This novel brought tears to my eyes on many occassions. Character development is very well done and the book overall is very well written. This novel forces you to reconsider the relationships you have, not only with your father but with all your family and friends. A thought provoking read making the reader think of the bigger picture, trying to make the right decisions and choices in life. This is a realistic representation of any young woman facing challenges throught her life, whether that b...more

First off, make sure you don't confuse this book with this book, as I did, or you're liable to become really, really confused.

Kevin died of cancer at age 30. But before he did, he wrote a book called The Manual for his then-five-year-old daughter, Lois Bates. At her in-law's wedding eight years later, Kevin's sister, Philomena, presents The Manual to Lois, now thirteen. The rules are simple. There is one entry for every birthday, from thirteen to thirty. She cannot cheat and peek ahead, although...more

Lola Jaye's by the time you read this, is about Lois Bates, a girl of 12 at the beginning who receives a manual for life written by her dead father on her birthday. She greatly misses her father, and reads The Manual on each subsequent birthday until she reaches 30. Lois becomes successful at her chosen career while navigating a friendship/love affair with her best friend's brother. I could relate a lot to Lois, as I am also very success-oriented, and found her refreshing among so many books wri...more

I enjoyed this book. I bought it for a £1 years ago at Asda. Who knew it would be a diamond in the rough. It's premise is unique, as will its style. And it hits home with many situations. If only every person could have a manual growing up (excluding the tragic circumstances) This book has given me a new style of books I'd like to start reading more of.

I found this book to be a quick, fun, albeit somewhat forgettable read. I was approximately half way into it before remembering that I had read it before.

The plot moved quickly with events moving along at a brisk pace. There were times I wished for more detail and times I wished for less. Certain events that transpired early on in the book were left untouched until the end. I felt that the step father needed more character development. I couldn't become invested in his character because I didn't...more

I found this on sale in a library for 50p and I liked the title and cover. I quite enjoyed it, I wasn't sure what to expect from the title except a dead person, but as soon as I started reading I liked it.

A 12 year old girl, Lois, gets a book her dad wrote to her on his death bed 7 years earlier. The book has letters from him that she is supposed to read until she's 30. I really like the letters and advice her dad gave Lois in the book, it was the kind of advice all girls should get as they're...more

Lois was 5 years old when she lost her 30 year old father. Before she is 12 years old her mother is now getting remarried and Lois receives a book from her Aunt Philomena, who is her dad's sister.
The book is titled "The Manual" and is written by her father, before he knew he was going to pass away. Each birthday from the ages of 12-30 there is an entry for her to read from her dad. There are also miscellaneous section that can be read at any time.
As Lois grows The Manual becomes her lifeline to...more

Unfortunately, the idea of this book was the best thing about it. Based on the story of a terminally ill mother featured on Oprah who prepared video tapes for her daughters to be watched after her death, this book misses the mark.

Kevin Bates discovers he only has a few months to live, he begins to write a "manual" for his five year old daughter to read when she turns twelve, and then once a year there after on her birthday until she is thirty. Lois finds much needed solace in the manual and find...more

I saw this book and just had to have it! I even carried it around with me like a blanket, because I didn't want to leave it. I just wanted to open it up and start reading, but I was reading another book at the time. When that book was finished, I quickly grabbed this book and started reading what I for sure thought would be a tear-jerker, wantint to call me dad every minute, and learn life lessons for where I am in life......NOTHING happened. I cannot even finish reading it because I am so disap...more

This book is easily a weekend read - the pages turn easily and the story unfolds without alot of complications. It is a love story between a father and daughter. A love story with a twist. Dad died when Lois was only five, and shortly after a grim diagnosis. Once he realizes he doesn't have long to live, he creates a manual for Lois - life lessons and experiences to help "raise" her, even from the grave. As morbid as it sounds, his voice is sweet, charming and loving as he does his best to help...more

I never knew there's a book with a story so much identical with my relationship with dad. My tears slipped down from my eyes when I was reading the most touching letters her father [Kevin Bates] gave to her [Lois Bates]. I can feel Lois's longing for her father. And with that, I can relate to the story. It's like I myself is in the book. I feel like I am Lois. :)
So much for that, I've learned not to stoop down to a low-level bitch.
Someday, I have to be independent from my parents and stand on my...more

If I was reading the last part alone in my room, I swear I could have cried a river. But I was in a waiting shed, I had to keep my self from doing something stupid like brawling. I had to stop and then take deep breaths to not sob. And I tell you, I don't do it very pretty. It's rather awful. Ha3x

“By the time you read this” by Lola Jaye

Lois gets with “The Manual” lifelong advices from her dad Kevin Bates that died when she was five. “Father- Daughter- Love” is an important part of this lovely "tearjerker" book. It shows that heartwarming ties bind even beyond life. Lois' character changes enormously from a shy, insecure 12 year old girl to a determined, world-wise 30 year old women. The manual helps her to go through tough times when none else understood her except her dad and his truly...more

I was surprised that I liked this book. At first I wasn't sure I would. It starts off with a twelve year old. Oh fun. -_- I thought that this book might be about a 12 year old complaining about everything. But it wasn't. It was about a lot of things. It's s good book to read during the summer on the beach. It's interesting with twists, although some are subtle and others you seen coming. To me, it was almost like a comfort book. It showed the ups and downs of a girl's life from 12 to 30 and how...more

When Lois is 12, she is given a manual that was written for her by her dead father. Inside the manual, her father guides her through life by the way of letters written for her to read on every birthday until she's 30. But while she is clinging to her father and his manual so hard, how will Lois ever learn the lessons he writes about?

This was a comfortable read, something you can just sit back and relax with because it's not very taxing. The story itself is interesting enough, there are a few twi...more

I found this father-daughter story to be rather sweet. I didn't gain much interest in this book until about halfway through, though. In fact, I stopped reading it and came back to it a few months later. Despite this, I really enjoyed the main character's progression. I found all the characters highly realistic, as well as the story line. I became very attached to the characters even though I didn't always agree with them or understand why they felt the way they did. I was constantly frustrated a...more

Far from being the best I ever read, I'm happy to say I did at least mildly enjoy reading this book. I found that the character kind of developed in a mountain pattern, so to speak. What I mean is at the beginning of the book, she was at the bottom of the mountain. She was a young girl, still mourning the loss of her father, and upset that her mother had decided to move on and be happy with life when she remarries. I'll be honest, I absolutely hated the character of Lois Bates, the 12 year old....more
