Am conflicted - wonderful characters and great plot, but the delivery and conclusion fell a little short (3.5 stars)

My library branch is closing down due to renovations and I found Death Angels as I was raiding the shelves - all in a selfless attempt to help them and make it so that they had less books to move, of course ;-). I was intrigued, since I've been wanting to read more mysteries and thrillers, and what with the recent rage for Swedish writers I thought Åke Edwardson would b More...

Klappentext:

While the story pulled me in enough to keep me interested, I was left with the feeling that something else was lacking. Now that I've had a few days to think about it, I believe those things are plot development and character connections.

The crimes themselves are as the back cover describes it: "macabre", and the book is a fast-paced and "just the facts, ma'am" type of work. In film format, this is perfect. However, in the context of a book, it was as if the aut More...

Alles wirkt stark gewollt.

Edwardson is one of the best of the Scandinavian crime writers and DEATH ANGELS is the best of his novels I've read to date. Erik Winter, Edwardson's brooding protagonist, is one of the most appealing characters in crime fiction and in this case is the indirect victim of a deranged killer's cruel vengeance. The atmosphere, characters and storyline combine to produce a high level of suspense while giving insights into everything from procedure to, inter-country police cooperation and to Swedish cu More...

Poznajcie Erika Wintera, 37-latka. Jeden z najmłodszych komisarzy w dziejach. Prywatnie - brat rozwiedzionej lekarki, syn rodziców, którzy uciekli przed zimnem i starością do Hiszpanii. Mimo powodzenia u płci przeciwnej - człowiek sa More...

It took me forever to read this book because I kept losing interest up until the last hundred pages or so. There were quite a few times when I thought about just giving it up. It had a pretty good story line but I was not a fan of the style and a lot of the characters were so forgettable I'd think I was being introduced to a new character only to keep reading and realize they had been introduced earlier. I wouldn't re-read this, but I'll probably try another book by Edwardson to see if I like it More...

I was hesitating between 3 and 4 stars. 4 Stars because I liked the story, it grabbed me, was exciting and dark, like I think a good thriller should be.

Eventuelly I decided for 3 starts, because I did not like the way the story was written. There were quite a few dialogues in the book and the interaction between the participants was not only verbally (written words they spoke), but much more non-verbal. The conversation was often More...

I can't really rate this book with stars for a couple of reasons. I could give it one star because I didn't like it in terms of how gristly and grim it was both in setting and character. Or I could rate it several stars because it's very well written, extremely detailed in sensory details and poetic narrative.

So rather than giving it stars let's just say while I appreciate the writing talent of Edwardson, I was far too disturbed to enjoy it.

This is a gripping tale of cross-country murder. Detective Eric Winter teams up with Scotland Yard to solve the double murder of two young men--a Brit living in Sweden and a Swede living in Britain. There are all sorts of other interesting stories going on at the same time, which involve the colleagues and friends of Swedish detective Winter. I cannot put these Nordic mysteries down!

Inspector Winter carries on internal conversations as well as extensive external - lots of characters are long term with him so banter is prevalent, sometimes gets in the way, but have to be careful because information is casually conveyed and u might miss a tidbit. Violent crimes, tough world even in Sweden. Sets a mood in the bleak setting and climate. Want more of Edwardson!

An author new to me. I like his quirky descriptive, often metaphorical language: An angel flitted through the room; A bolt of electricity darted into the night every time the door opened; Three black girls stood in a corner waiting for something to happen; Cars swished by...." Dark, detailed, a page turner. I will read more of his writing. Main character: Erik Winter.

Having read all Wallander books I was looking for a decent replacement of my Scandinavian-Crime therapy! And I have found it in Åke Edwardson's books, I hope. I love Göteborg, a city I fell in love with during my 1 year stay in Sweden. The characters in his book are very clearly presented, and add up to a small fictional world created by the author. I am very much looking forward to next books as I plan to read them all. And inspector Winter is now my new favourite hero.

I really tried to like this book, but in the end, I just didn't care what happened. The character development was so poor that I felt nothing for any of the people in the book. The end just confused me. "Ok, so why did he do it?" There was no real explanation of the killer's reasoning (or a lot of other characters, for that matter). It just seemed horribly cobbled together, with frequent mentions of John Coltrane and cigarillos. I want to give it the benefit of the doubt and say the tr More...

Despite Edwardson's ploy of raising the stakes with young victims, as he did in the #2 Inspector Winter mystery Shadow Woman, I enjoyed Death Angels. That it veers stylistically between Mickey Spillane and Tolstoy, and that Inspector Winter, like Lord Wimsey, is a tad too well dressed, add to the fun. The story concerns tracking sex crimes in Gothenburg and London that Inspector Winter solves with expensive shoe leather and good old intuition.

I knowI had reservations about this book, but as I read on, I found it gripping and with some unsuspected twists. I think my initial qualms occurred because this book was a printed proof that I had received from someone. Now, after finishing the book, I will definitely look for more of Mr. Edwardson's books.

And this is how it all begins. Quite interesting to read the first Eric Winter book, after reading the third and the fifth. I liked the plot - duplicate crimes in Gothenburg and London - but the ending was a little contrived/clever, making it hard to believe.

An earlier book in the Swedish Inspector Winter series, but I just got around to reading it. Finally, get introduced to Inspector Winter's English counterpart and more development of some of the other detectives he works with.

This is one of the best Swedish mysteries I have read. Erik Winter is a cool detective. He has to work with detective Macdonald in London on this case which involves murders of young men in Gothenburg, Sweden, and London.

The Finnish translation of Åke Edwardson: Dans med en ängel.

Edwardson has quite a unique style to write. At points it's good, but at points it makes you feel you're reading a conversation Edwardson heard and is now describing it and thinking you were there too to hear the original conversation. So sometimes I didn't quite understand what he tried to say.

The story itself wasn't quite like other regular crime stories. Edwardson revealed bits and pieces slowly and therefore More...

Look, either you love character deiven thriller/crime stories or you don't. If you do, this book (and the one that's coming out in March from S&S) are top notch.

Meh. Not sure why I keep reading swedish crime fiction. Of the 3 authors I've read this year this is my least favorite. Some of the dialogue style was interesting, but overall not that great.

The first in a popular series, but I will need to read another to decide if the author is for me. The characters and story line were fine, but I am not sure about the translator.
