I really don't know how Mo Willems does it but each Elephant and Piggie book is as wonderful as the last. I just can't get enough of these two. Every time I see a new one I have to read it and I really want to read it out loud (you really get the full effect if you read it out loud). These characters are awesome, the illustrations just enhance the story and the few words are easy to read and appropriate to the target age. But who really cares about that stuff...the important thing is that these...more

When Gerald sneezes near Piggie, he is convinced that pigs make him sneeze and that he will never be able to be near his friend again. Level-headed Piggie arrives with a helmet to block the sneeze germs, and a new character, Doctor Cat, diagnoses a simple cold. The simple, short sentences all told in speech bubbles make the books an ideal choice for emerging readers. Gerald’s sneeze is so big it bursts out of its bubble space. The simple lines in Mo Willems’s cartoon pen and ink drawings capture...more

Think Dick and Jane. Or, nowadays, think Dick and Jane with rhyming to make phonics. They have boring little stories that clearly repeat a lot of words for the sake of repeating them. I mean, they try, they really do, but there's only so much most authors can do with a list of 300 words, most of them short. These books are HARD to write.

Consequently, when your kid or student has outgrown a particular early reader, they're done with it. These books aren't REAL literature, after all. And real book...more

"Pigs Make Me Sneeze!" is a cute book that certainly had the little ones worrying at first. You see as the book opens Piggie is cartwheeling up to Gerald, as happy as can be. Gerald is delighted, as usual, to see his friend. But then it begins. Gerald begins sneezing and sneezing. In fact, his giant elephant sneezes blow Piggie all around. But he just can't stop. Which is when he frighteningly concludes that he just might be allergic to pigs.

The drama is heightened when Gerald leaps to the concl...more

We just discovered the Elephant & Piggie series at the library and have checked out every one they have. They are a bit easy for my 7-year-old to read on his own, but he loves that they are easy enough that he can sit and read them to his younger brother without any adult help. The 5-yr-old thinks they are hilarious and has memorized several books. The two youngest act out the story lines during their play time.

My older boys (both 11) will read these on their own. Even I think they're hilari...more

In Pigs Make Me Sneeze!, Gerald believes he is allergic to his best friend! Will he have to stay away from Piggie forever? (Goodreads summary)

Pigs Make Me Sneeze! (Elephant and Piggie) by Mo Willems addresses yet another fear of Gerald: what if he is allergic to Piggie?!? This fear errupts just as a series of elephant sized sneezes begin. Fortunately Dr. Cat is able to deliver good news to Gerald.

As typical in this series, this book features large fonts, word balloons, word repetition, and simpl...more

Willems, Mo Pigs Make Me Sneeze!, pgs.64 Hyperion Book CH. Language~G, Sexual Content~G; Violence~G;

Elephant and Piggie are back! However, Gerald has a serious case of the sneezes. He seems to sneeze quite a bit when he is around Piggie. Does this mean they can no longer be friends?! Fortunately, with the help of good Doctor Cat, it turns out Elephant has a cold and not allergies to Piggie. However, since Elephant didn’t practice good “Dracula” sneeze habits, Piggie got sick too.

This is another...more

We have been conducting an author study of Mo Willems to encourage independent reading (the stories are engaging), and to prompt discussions on expressive writing. After reading this and several other Mo Willems books with voice dramatization, I have noticed a significant increase in independent reading and the use of exclamation marks in their writing. I only give it 4 stars out of 5, because I do not consider the characters ideal role models for peaceful behavior. However, it gets kids to read...more

The Elephant and Piggie books, centered on two friends who are opposites, are great for children just beginning to learn how to read on their own. Most beginning readers are a little boring since the idea is learning how to read (repetition, rhyming words) versus an interesting plot, but Mo Willems' series brings humor in his signature simple, humorous style. In this story, Gerald thinks he is allergic to Piggie when he actually just has a cold.

I used Pigs Make Me Sneeze! for a Mo Willems-theme...more

Oh Mo Willems, you are so sly creating a book called Pigs Make Me Sneeze at the height of the H1N1 fear. This is another silly and laugh-worthy installment in the Piggie and Elephant series. Poor Gerald thinks he's allergic to his best friend, Piggie. Luckily, that turns out to be not so true. Willems, as always, is able to depict great swings in emotion with a mere shift in his characters' lines. The expressions are hilarious and beautifully done. Sure to be another big hit in my library. Keep...more

This book is for:PreK-5
Topic: Senses; Allergies vs. Colds (germs)
Reflection: Mo Willems can make anything funny! Elephant can't stop sneezing so he concludes since Piggy is the one closest to him he must be allergic to Piggy! In the end he realizes that he just had a cold! Piggy realizes this as well since Elephant shared his germs with him. Great way to talk with the younger students about the differences between allergies and colds, germs, and how we can keep ourselves healthy.

This book is a great story that I would use to discuss topics like friendship and being sick. I would read this book during the winter time, when kids are more prone to getting sick, do that they can probably relate more. I would use this story to start talking about what it means to be sick, how we can promote cleanliness and even create a "no cold" center. We would have hand sanitizer and tissue in this area so kids can get used to the procedures of being sanitary.

This is my first Elephant & Piggie book, however, I have read other books by Mo Willems and LOVED them. In "Pigs Make Me Sneeze!" Gerald worries that he is allergic to pigs, which is a huge problem because his best friend, Piggie, is a pig. Gerald goes to see Doctor Cat who tells him not to worry, Piggie IS NOT the reason behind his sneezing. The illustrations are simiple but adorable. The charachters have distinct personalites that I think kids will really like.

Two animals with contrasting personality traits romp through the pages of this book. Elephant Gerald is careful; his best friend Piggie is not. The theme of this book for ages four through eight is friendship.
Readers will delight in the writer-illustrator's signature style of enlarging key words and sentences.
As with other books in this series, there is an important message at the end.

This is another one of Mo Williams hilarious books. It is simple just like all of his other books and in the same format with the animals communicating through the "bubble" type conversations. This is another one of those books where the tone of voice or type of voice used will make the book even more funnier than it already is!!

This book made me smile. I loved how Elephant jumped to conclusions and was convinced that he was allergic to pigs. The ending was amusing and I adored the whimsical and playful the illustrations. Mo Willems has created a cute series.

This isn't my favorite Elephant and Piggie book by any means, and if I was just comparing to all of the Elephant and Piggie books, I would probably give it 3 or 4 stars, BUT, since I'm comparing it to all picture books, it's an easy 5 star. Mo Willems is a wizard of read alouds. The best of the best.

" ahhhhhh choooooooooo" is all i remember from this book. Children will love to " ahhhhhh chooooooo" with the elephant. I also like how Mo Willems promoted friendship between the two. Childen can learn how to care for friend, and other things that they dan do when their friend got sick.

Fake and super dramatic achooing has been a favorite thing for my kid to do since she was a baby. Well, Gerald the elephant doesn't disappoint regarding super dramatics. I loved Doctor Cat, bit player I know. Oh my gosh, but how uncorrect of Gerald not to achoo in his elbow! hehe...

When Gerald can't stop sneezing, he worries that he may be allergic to his best friend Piggie. Distraught, Gerald wonders how he will ever be able to do the things that Piggie and him love to do together. Another winning installment in the fantastic Elephant and Piggie series.

Another great Elephant and Piggie book. I love how the illustrations help tell the story, so simple, but with interesting details thrown in, i.e. Dr. Cat pulls his thermometer out of his skin like a pocket and Piggie gets a crash helmet for Elephant's next big sneeze!
Erin Reilly-Sanders
While the illustrations are as hilarious as always, the story was not my favorite. My husband pointed out that there is less banter than usual and maybe that's it. I think you also need a super good reader to get Gerald's sneezes to be as funny as possible when read aloud.
Jill
Mo Willems humor is fabulous. I have read this book over and over and over and over to my four-year-old daughter and over again to my five-year-old son and none of us ever tire of the story line or the emotion of Gerald.

What a funny book.

"No! Do not speak!" Love it.

I love all of Mo Willems books! I think they are all adorable and allow so much emotion and personality to be expressed. Children can play the roles of each character and act it out. They can also come up with their own versions of the story to present to the class.

Yes, five stars - they resonate with me, make me think and laugh, and are a hit with everyone I share them with. This one, admittedly, maybe 4.5 stars as it was a little implausible. But still. And poor Doctor Cat. And, as always, don't miss the end-papers.
Linda
This too was a little abstract because my granddaughter doesn’t yet know that you can be allergic to something. It was funny with the big sneezes and even the alarm concerning the friendship might have to end showed Elephant’s usual worries over nothing.

Mo Willems is one of my favorite authors becuase i find all of his books entertaining. In this book he uses minimal words as he always does, the conversation bubbles give it a comic book feel. The elephant and other characters are fun to follow.

Another cute book from Mo Willems. This time Gerald is sneezing and he thinks he's allergic to Piggie. He goes to Doctor Cat and then thinks he's allergic to cats. However, Dr. Cat tells him that he's got a cold and he passed it to Piggie.
Arlene Allen
This is another great one! I love poor Piggie's mishaps when Elephant sneezes, and I like his helmet, and the picture of Elephant sneezing on Dr. Cat is priceless. I like the little "twist" ending. This is one of my favorite E&P books.
Allison
Poor Elephant! When his best friend Piggie comes over, he starts to SNEEZE. How can you be BEST FRIENDS with someone when you are ALLERGIC to them???

I recommend this book to Peter, who thinks he is allergic to the cat. But ISN'T.
