Anna Mercury Volume 1: The Cutter
by
Warren Ellis (Goodreads Author),
Facundo Percio
Dancing amid the spires of a city called New Ataraxia, there is a woman who can cloud men's minds, leap across buildings as if weightless, unerringly fire twin automatic pistols in the most insane conditions, and disappear in a crowded room. She fights against the political repression of an insane technocratic society, comes from a place that no one in New Ataraxia ha...more

Too much exposition, not enough plot.
There was a lot of decent set up, enough for an ongoing story, but then not enough pay off to justify it all. This was a limited series and as such the set-up should have taken that into consideration. We needed less set up and more plot. Yes, I KNOW there is a sequel series coming out and the set up will carry over but that wasn't known that would happen for sure at the time this mini-series was written. As such, there should have been more e...more

Ellis writes a catchy & interesting story about alternative Earths and the G8's controlled organization which takes care of fixing what's wrong in these "Earths" because of our Earth's fault.
As usual in Ellis' works, the main character is hard as steel, a caustic person thatperfectly sits in the story.
Problem with this book is the drawing: Facundo Percio is great with face expressions and day to day situations, but bad with action scenes... and unfortunately thi...more

After a couple "meh" efforts from Ellis at Avatar, I was beginning to suspect that his Avatar books were just places to dump a lot of half-formed and not well-written ideas. ANNA MERCURY turned that around. It's somewhat MATRIX-y but also with a bit of APOLLO 11 thrown in, a technique I really enjoyed. ANNA MERCURY is probably one of the better Ellis stories I've read. It's no DESOLATION JONES or PLANETARY, but it has the potential to get there if he chooses to continue doing more with...more
I was hoping for more from this. The idea of Ellis writing a dominatrix-Batwoman secret agent who gets to bounce between parallel worlds and pout sounds great but there isn't much here. The character is a wasted opportunity so far, who basically runs around blowing up anonymous soldiers when she's supposed to be saving their asses? Better luck next time.
Meh. More Ellis techno-jibberish than I need. Usually Ellis throws in enough insane/funny characters to make his latest future-fetish easier to swallow, but Anna Mercury was pretty much straight-up heroic. The art was nice, especially for an Avatar book. Nice boobies and leather.
This odd little graphic novel is not Warren Ellis's best work. I kept waiting for the story to take off, but it never did. Perhaps the story gets more interesting in later volumes, but this one left me cold.
A very interesting setup. I hope to read more. Ellis writes a good story and creates interesting characters. Yay for new stories, but when will we see more Desolation Jones?
Meh. Just a stereotypical genre comic with a few excuses for Warren Ellis to describe some of his science-y ideas.
Dear Mr. Ellis,
This was pretty silly, man.
Best to you,
Justin

reading the issues, though for some reason i don't have the last one. will go searching tomorrow.
this one is great, even by warren ellis standards. some hard science, some giant guns, a sexy kick ass heroine, and just an overall interesting concept. i love that mr. ellis can run with so many of his ideas. i can't wait to see how this turns out.
finally got the last issue.. the pacing in this one is awesome. hits the ground running and doesn't let up.

Oh Warren Ellis, you just keep going further and further into stuff that makes my head hurt. I loved this story of covert agents working on alternate earths, trying to keep them from destroying themselves. Might get a bit too much exposition and the art was a bit meh at times, but still a really good read.
