J.T. Ellison knows how to spin a tale with Taylor Jackson, a tough-as-nails main character who never seems to lack for passion. She finds it in both her professional and personal life. The Cold Room gripped me from the first page, and it didn’t let me go until I had reached the end. The chilling nature of the tale kept me in rapt attention, and while the plot may have seemed a bit farfetched to some, I found it to be both heavily researched and a compelling read.

I found myself intrigued by the d...more

Reading J.T. Ellison's Nashville-set mystery series, I always find myself wanting to love the books more than I do when the final page is turned.

It's not that they're bad, per se. It's just that the stories can be so unfocused that it makes for a frustrating reading experience.

Unfortunately, "The Cold Room" is no exception. Starting off with a serial killer who poses his victims after famous works of art is an intriguing staring point. Removing Taylor Jackson for her team and comfort zone as she...more

Due to restructuring of the Nashville Metro Police Department, homicide detective Taylor Jackson’s been demoted from her prior position of lieutenant. If that isn’t bad enough, she’s being pursued by a serial killer called the Pretender. Now another serial killer’s in Nashville, one who abducts young black women, starves them to death and, after performing necrophilia, poses them per scenes from famous paintings. It isn’t long before Jackson’s fiancé, FBI profiler Dr. John Baldwin, connects Jack...more

This book creeped me out and gave me chills as I was reading it. In a good way. It creeped me out because I can not imagine what the girls went through to be locked in a glass box and starved to death and then having the killer do horrible things to their bodies after they were dead. It gave me chills to think of this and knowing that someone out there is sick enough to actually do something like this.
This is my first novel my Ellison and also my first novel featuring detective Taylor Jackson. I...more

A chilling serial-killer mystery, in which Nashville police detective Taylor Jackson and her fiancé, FBI profiler John Baldwin, must track down the perpetrators of two series of extremely macabre murders, one in Europe and one in the USA. Their lives are further complicated by a Scotland Yard detective called in to help with the investigation, James "Memphis" Highsmythe, who becomes obsessed by Taylor at first sight and is not reticent about showing his feelings toward her.

Fast pacing, a rivetin...more

I have been working through the Taylor Jackson books and on the whole I've been quite enjoying them. They are not without flaws but engaging enough to hold my attention. This one... not so much. It very nearly ended up a DNF a couple of times.

If you like your minorities stereotyped to the point of caricature then this is the book for you. Black people who neglect their dirty children and say 'dat', Englishmen who say 'bit of skirt' and 'your chap'... Memphis Highsmythe (seriously? What, there ar...more

Taylor Jackson hunts "The Conductor" a serial killer who may travel the world staging victims in poses that mimic famous paintings, with appropriate background music. This story is not for the faint of heart. Not just killings but torture and necrophilia are featured with a sadistic killer who starves his "dolls" inside a glass box until they are perfect for his twisted fantasies.

JT Ellison is a master story teller. Her series character Jackson is one of the best in thrillers today. She does her...more

Necrophilia aside, I really enjoyed this book. The creepy factor is high, but I liked the personal development in the characters. Taylor demoted to Detective grows the most when she is forced to work with a new partner (I liked him too), but even Baldwin's character gets fleshed out a little more. I'm still not convinced he's the best profiler out there as he always seems to be a step behind Jackson and her basic police work. In this book what shines the most is how many people contribute to the...more

WOW! I just finished The Cold Room. I still haven't caught my breath. That was one amazingly intense story. I read it in one sitting, I couldn't put it down.
The Cold Room is the fourth book in the Taylor Jackson series. After she was demoted in the previous book, Taylor is trying to deal with being just a rank and file detective again. Her team has been broken up and all working in different parts of Nashville. She has a new partner who has been a detective for all of one month. And she has a ne...more

This was a mostly solid mystery. Ellison gives us an unusual crime, committed by an unusual criminal in an unusual way. And, I’m always excited to read a police procedural that isn’t set in New York or southern California. But there were a few pieces that bothered me.

One was Memphis. I didn’t quite get his obsession with Taylor, and would have liked a bit more a clue. Also, I didn’t think the reason he was sent to the U.S. was very good — he spent more time tagging along with Taylor and Baldwin...more

The Cold Room by J.T. Ellison

The Cold Room is the fourth book in the Taylor Jackson series.
I loved to read this series initially because I like the strong character of Taylor Jackson.
Ellison writes a good plot and her characters, for the most part, evolve with each book.
After reading this book though I was a little disappointed in the plot and the main character, Taylor Jackson.
I felt like the plot was dragging a little and could have been wrapped up sooner. The plot unfolded nicely but the...more

What a disturbing crime thriller- I thought it was great!! Without giving anything away, the mind of the criminal in this book are astonishing and so sick and twisted. This is the first Detective Jackson book I've read, but from the beginning, I became extremely interested in wanting to learn more, curious about what else lies out there for her and Baldwin and will they ever accomplish their own personal goal. The writing was fantastic as I was easily able to picture each character and each scen...more

This book had so much potential, and it started off so well... then it just fizzled. I was highly disappointed because the first few chapters of this book had everything. It was gripping, mysterious, and thought provoking. The charcters were exciting, intriguing, and likable. Then all of a sudden everything started to unravel which is weird since it was done so neatly. By neat it was complete chaos but alls well ends well. There was no more excitement, no more police work because everything magi...more

Homicide Detective Taylor Jackson is back.

Taylor has her hands full with the latest case…a serial killer, who kidnaps women and leaves their dehydrated bodies for the authorities to find. When Taylor’s boyfriend and FBI profiler, Dr. John Baldwin helps on the case, he realizes that Taylor has no ordinary serial killer on her hands. Jack has seen this type of work before on a previous case he worked on. The killer was known as “The Conductor”.

Jack calls in some reinforcements in the form of New...more

The Conductor is a sick human being. That is a huge statement coming from me. I often watch gory and truly horrifying films (both paranormal and twisted demented minds of a serial killer) my cousin-in-law and I, would watch three consecutive films every other saturday and would have a lengthy discussion of what happened to the characters, the camera angles and the acting, etc. With that I rarely get the urge to buy a book a read them up. But when The Cold Room was offered to me, the blurb intrig...more

This is the second Taylor Jackson book I've read so the references so I had no idea who The Pretender was except that he was a criminal who got away in a previous book. I liked the mystery of who was starving and murdering women in Tennessee (and Italy). I liked having chapters from the killer's perspective as it tells you the why as opposed to just being creeped out by the thought of necrophilia. Yup this serial killer was a freaky dude. Everything gets explained eventually and you understand w...more

A good story. I found I really liked McKenzie but, I missed Fitz, Lincoln & Marcus. Hope they are back in the next book.
Disliked the part about Memphis... He was quite annoying.
(view spoiler)[I understand he would have had a shock when he first met Taylor and saw the similarities to his dead wife, but to be interested in Taylor because of that, creeps me out. And then to persistently dog Taylor, he came across as a sleaze and I'm surprised Taylor didn't punch him. (hide spoiler)]

Ellison has written better. I agree with the reviewers who think this book started out really good then fizzled. The premise of the story was different and disturbing and I was expecting a suspenseful mystery. Instead we get a lame love triangle which seems out of place with the story - although this may play out in later books (not sure I'm looking forward to that). We also get the case being very neatly wrapped up in record time. It just seemed too easy, as if the author was rushing to finish...more

This book was creepy but with a very realistic scenario. It was something that hit home as well, since I live in Nashville, and have family in Italy.

The only issue I had with the entire book was the main female character, although somewhat strong, is a tease who likes to flirt with the male characters. She is a good boss, and likes to mentor younger police, but has commitment issues and is easily flattered.

The police procedure is important to the story, but not so overly done that it bogs down...more

Do not miss this author! I snagged this through early reviewers with no preconceived ideas and having read none of the earlier books. This book had all the components of a great psychological thriller - great characters (with incredibly sick villians), a great story, and a writing style that makes you feel in the moment. I am definitely going to go back and read the earlier books in the series. A few additional comments - 1) It took a few chapters to get caught up to the characters since it is t...more

Now that I have read my first J.T. Ellison book, I'm dying (no pun intended) to go back and read the first three in what's sure to be an incredible series. Let me say I LOVE creepy stuff and The Cold Room stars one of the creepiest characters imaginable. The writing was excellent! The undoubtedly well researched procedures and investigative methods were elaborated on with just the right amount of depth, the storyline was both believable and utterly horrifying and the good guys - well - you're ju...more

Taylor Jackson is having a hard time adjusting to her recent demotion back to detective and the break up of her homicide detective crew. She has a new boss and a new partner and now a new serial killer to contend with. Taylor hasn't seen anything like this killer before - killing in Italy, the UK and now in Nashville. Not only does this killer change locations, but he has been changing his MO; highly unusual for a serial killer. With the help of her FBI boyfriend and a detective inspector on loa...more

It started out good. I loved this serial killer's style, but the coincidences and all the intertwining story lines drove me crazy. It was too predictable, and the whole love triangle... was that really necessary? A little romance is okay, but it took more time in the book than I would've liked. There didn't seem to be very much solving... It was like things magically presented themselves to the detectives and whatnot. I brought this with me on a trip. It took me the entire six weeks to actually...more

Well, what a thriller this book is - another OMG - great story line, very sick and twisted (just the way I like them). Some good twists and turns and conflicts thrown in - J.T. Ellison really knows how to tell a good story and keep you interested!

This book was OK,, definitely the killers were strange enough to hold your interest. But I found the whole thing with Memphis distracting from the story, and that's the reason I only gave it 3 stars. Hopefully his character doesn't make repeat visits in the future.

A murder mystery, but not one which I would recommend for an average mystery reader. This one was a little more gruesome than most, dealing with necrophilia. I also wish the ending told us what happened to Gavin & Tom. It kind of left you hanging....

I can't get enough of these. I finish one and there is no question that the next book I read will be the next one in the series.

I am almost scared to start the next one though, because I don't know if I'm going to like what Taylor might do!
I have to though, and then I have to read more, because I have the first Sam Owens to read too, and I can't jump that far ahead!
