Binky the Space Cat (Binky)
Binky is a space cat - at least in his own mind. He's really a house cat who has never left the family "space station." Unlike other house cats, Binky has a mission: to blast off into outer space (outside), explore unknown places (the backyard) and battle aliens (bugs). Binky must undergo rigorous training so he can repel the alien attacks that threaten his humans. As he b...more

1. Audience: Since this book is a graphic novel and much like a chapter book I would say the audience would be about second to third grade. This book would be great to help students transition between picture books to short chapter books.
2. Appeal: The story is about a house cat who is training to become a space cat. It is very funny and full of life. The cat is even shaped like a space ship, which I think would delight the students reading it. Binky does all of these things to prepare to go to...more

This was an okay book. Binky is definitely cute and lovable and has some pretty funny moments. The overall story is pretty cute the fact that he is saving his humans from the aliens (the bugs) is pretty funny and his little random comments are hilarious especially for young children such as when he explores alien qualities versus bug qualities and comes to the conclusion that they must be the same thing. Its an extremely fast and easy read and perfect for a growing reader who wants s...more

Binky the Space Cat is a unique and fun graphic novel for children. This graphic novel is centered on a cat named Binky and his wishes to go into outer space in order to become a space cat. The story is told in graphic novel format and therefore, it is unique and extremely fun to read; it is also interesting to read a story and know what the cat is thinking the entire time. The book definitely gave me a new perspective on how animals perceive everyday events in a human’s life. For example, Binky...more

A good introduction to the graphic novel, Binky the Space Cat, is geared toward younger readers. It is short in length compared to more in-depth graphic novels and the simple storyline is engaging and entertaining. The traditional elements of plot, setting, and characters were clear but I was not sure who this book would appeal to aside from cat lovers and the very young student. Binky is a house cat who confuses bugs for aliens, he lives with two humans, a mother and her son, and he is preparin...more
I've rarely found a cat story that I won't read. Throw in a science fiction element and I'm intrigued. Add a graphic novel format and you've got me hooked. Binky the Space Cat (Binky) by Ashley Spires has all three and is entertaining and amusing to boot.
Binky is a housecat who believes he is destined to become a spacecat after receiving an acceptance letter to F.U.R.S.T. - Felines of the Universe Ready for Space Travel. I wonder if Binky may have seen some of the movie Starship Troopers, since...more

Back in February, I green dotted - the process in which I place a green dot on a new book - entitled Binky Under Pressure by Ashley Spires. At the time, I didn't know that Binky was already a well known space cat. I just saw the short graphic novel - graphic novella? - as cute. I mean, it's about a cat who thinks outside the house equals outer space! To my knowledge, we didn't hold the other books - we do, by the way, just not all in the same section for some strange reason (libraries lack logic...more
This book is a graphic novel that is very humorous and talks about a cat that wants to be a space cat. Not only does the title of the book catch the reader’s attention, but the actual cover does so too. It is of a cute cat that has a space helmet in his hand and the whole picture has a space theme border around it. The cover gives a great preview of what the story will be about and intrigues the reader. The end pages also capture the reader’s attention. It has tons of pictures of Binky being a n...more
Binky is a black and white cat, who one day decides he wants to be a space cat. The narrative explains the process through which Binky came to this decision and how he plans on going to outer space to defeat aliens. The author does a fantastic job mixing the pictures and words and using panels throughout the pages. The text and illustrations go great together and really do a wonderful job telling the story. I would recommend this graphic novel to everybody boys and girls alike, I absolutely love...more

Binky came to live with his humans as a kitten. He is all grown up and he loves his humans. He has discovered many things about the world with the most important being aliens. Humans call them bugs but cats know better. He decides to leave his space station (house) so he can spend his life saving the universe from aliens but first he must build a rocket. While building his rocket he also spends his time saving his own humans from the aliens but when the rocket is finished he finds he has left so...more
This book takes a stab at answering the question: "What is my companion animal thinking about?" In this story, we get a glimpse of what Binky the cat thinks about all those bugs flying around his house. Binky doesn't think of them as bugs - to him, they are menacing space aliens, and the world outside is outer space. He builds a space ship so that he can fly to the far reaches of the universe in order to battle these creatures in their home territory...but ends up staying behind when he realizes...more
Spires, A. (2009). Binky the Space Cat. New York: Kids Can Press.
This is a catchy book with an imaginative cat. Binky the space cat is really just a cat that has never left his home, but in his head he thinks he is on this space mission. He thinks he’s a space cat, out to protect his family, in a space station, and he’s training for a space mission to go to outer space and explore. I absolutely loved this book! I have been a "cat person" my whole life, so this was the natural choice for me. Binky actually reminds me of one of my current cats, Anna. The author of this book did such a wonderful job of creating Binky in a way that any cat lover would understand. I believe that my cats all have a little Binky in them because, they are all house cats, and only venture outside in their carriers to go to the vet! The frustrating, unappreciated life of the secret hero, saving people without their knowledge from dangers they're unaware of. It's a story that's been told countless times in countless ways, and almost always produces a good book, movie, comic, or other. Binky the Space Cat is no exception. He defends his people daily from incursions by aliens, hoping someday to rescue them from their isolated space station by finding a way to safely travel through outer space.
Of course, his people think Binky...more

“Binkey the Space Cat,” is such a fun written graphic novel that can be enjoyed by any age group. The graphic novel is about a cat Binky who is on a mission to be, we'll, a space cat! We are taken through when he receives his package telling him he is a space cat and through his life with the owners. The personification given to this cat is absolutely astounding. Although he is a cat, and the loved pet of his human owners, his ultimate goal is to protect his humans from aliens. So when he finall...more
I really enjoyed this cute book about a cat who is determined to go to space and fight aliens. The illustration is very cute and well done and it is enjoyable across a large range of age groups.
Binky wants to go into space and is determined to build his own rocket to do so. He wants to fight the evil aliens (bugs) that annoy his humans and wipe them out once and for all. But what happens when the space ship isn't big enough and Binky has to choose between his people and space?

Audience: This graphic novel would be good for grades 2-4.
Appeal: This graphic novel is funny, charming, and students will love Binky. He is very adventurous and looks out for his humans.
Application: If I were to use this book in my classroom, it would be for students to read during independent reading or group reading. For an activity, I would have students complete a story map. They would include characters, setting, problem, main events, and solution. I would then have students compare their...more

Binky is different from the normal cat, since he wants to go into outer space. This is a cute book for young readers, and people who love cats. Young children have a great imagination, which makes this book perfect for them. This book Is funny, and teaches children to protect the ones, whom you love, which is what animals usually do.
I did not like how the author did not use chapters, which does not allow children to take a break during their reading. Also, even though I liked that this book had...more

This book is CUTE! Interesting story plus funny pictures make it very attractive to me. The cat is different. I think the most brilliant part of the book is to make the cat human-like, and even more human than humans. He thinks, he talks(inside himself though), he dreams, he cares, he fights, he builds. But cat is cat after all, its thinking still roots in its life inside the house: the connection between flying bugs and aliens (its research on their common characteristics is "persuasive" to me)...more
This was just delightful, and some of the illustrations were so funny that I had to stop myself from laughing out loud (I was reading in bed and didn't want to wake up my husband). Binky is a cat who lives in a space station (his house) and has yet to visit outer space (the yard), but he knows he has a mission to protect his humans from aliens (insects). Good thing he's received his membership packet from FURST (Felines of the Universe Ready for Space Travel), complete with instructions on "How...more
Graphic: Ha ha ha! Hilarious! Oh Binky is so adorable and lovable, I just wish I had a cat as cool as him to protect me from all the aliens! I thought it oh so clever how he was an indoor cat and never had been to "outerspace" otherwise outside the four walls of a house. That possibly made the whole book for me. The illustrations are so cute and make me want to grab Binky right off the page. His training sessions against the aliens are particularly adorable. A quick read, good for a few smirks,...more

This is an adorable graphic novel that no one could not enjoy. The adorably little kitty, since he is a "space cat", can be geared towards both boys and girls. The captions and thoughts of the cat are super entertaining and match perfectly with the illustrations. Although Binky never goes through any serious facial expressions or changes, there is still so much emotion in each individual cell and that only furthers the obvious humor in the texts. The little disclosures on some of the scenes such...more
I loved this so much! It was an awesome book, and a great book to transfer students from younger books to older books. It has page numbers on the bottom, and has a decent amount of words but uses a comic style writing to help readers feel less intimidated.

Aside from Tintin, this is L's first foray into the graphic novel. I usually find them irritating to read aloud because I have to point to where I'm reading so he can see which picture the text is for. But this was so funny, I didn't mind. We've re-read it several times and he even asked me to read it aloud when he had a friend over because he wanted to share it.. Binky has never been outside and thinks everything outside the house is outer space. He thinks bugs are aliens and that it's his job...more
I loved this book, it was hilarious and the illustrations are amazing. This book resonated with me because I have three cats, who have never lived outside, just like Binky. The part of the story that I was most drawn to was the section where Binky is researching the differences between aliens and bugs. I thought the way the author presented Binky's findings was great because it also mimicks the way children would record scientific research in the classroom, like completing a chart that compares...more
Unlike your average cat, Binky has a purpose; he is a space cat. Binky is also an indoor cat. He is not been allowed in the space outside his home. Binky the Space Cat was actually the first graphic novel I have ever read--and it did not disappoint. Throughout the book, Binky appealed to me becase of his powerful aspirations. Though he before was strictly a house cat, that did not stop him from pursuing something "grand" like going out to space. In addition, hearing the story through Binky's point of view was very enjoyable. It was neat to really be taken inside the mind of an animal--something I have always tried to do with my dogs!
