Olivia lovers
I treated myself with a used copy of Olivia Saves the Circus, one of the two "real" Olivia books I didn't own yet, via Amazon. The story and the pictures are wonderful. I do love Olivia. In this volume she is supposed to tell her classmates about her holidays and spins a tale which revolves around her single-pawedly substituting all artists and clowns and animal tamers of a huge circus show, because the entire performing staff suffered from an ear inflammation and - certainly - because Olivia al...more
Another irresistible adventure featuring Olivia, from the 2001 Caldecott Honor Book of the same name. Olivia reports to her class the 'pretty much all true' story of her circus adventures, including performing as the Queen of the Trampoline."
CIP: At school, Olivia tells about her summer vacation and how, when she went to the circus and all the performers were out sick, she saved the day, becoming Olivia the Tattooed Lady, Olivia the Lion Tamer, the Flying Olivia, and more."

Let me begin by saying that I am a big fan of Ian Falconer’s Olivia series. I think they are a well done, clever, and actually very humorous books. This particular book, just like the rest in its series, would make a fantastic read aloud book, especially for young elementary audiences. I think young students in particular will find the character of Olivia the pig very funny and entertaining. The fact that the main character is an animal is a great start. That aspect alone always seems to grab th...more
Ian Falconer's "Olivia" tells the story of a little pig who tells her class about the time she went to the circus with her mom and little brother. She shares that when they got there, "all the circus people were out sick with ear infections" but that was alright because she "knew how to do everything." Olivia tells her class about all the different things she did while at the circus and describes herself as "Olivia the Tattooed Lady," "Olivia the Lion Tamer," "Olivia the Tight-rope Walker," "Oli...more
This book was uniquely illustrated and had a fun story line about the enthusiastic little pig named Olivia. At schol she had to tell the class about what she did on her vacation. She makes up a huge story about how she was in a circus and had to be the main event since all the other people in the circus were sick. She tells her teacher most of it was true, although he did not believe her. Then at home when it was time for bed, her mother had to remind her to go to sleep and not jump on the bed,...more
I love Olivia saves the circus as a picture book and read aloud. This is a great book to read especially on the first day of school for K-2. Olivia tells her story about saving the circus during show and tell at school, all of which comes from her vivid imagination. This would be a great book to get the students involved and have them do a show and tell after reading the story and asking the students if they have ever been to a circue. The teacher could also bring in a stuffed animal "Olivia" to...more
Olivia the cutely independent little pig helps her mama feeding her little brothers! And then she goes to school and it's her turn to talk about her holiday. She tells them about the "quite all true" story when she went to the circus with her mom and found out that all the circus people were off sick. She stands out since she knows how to do everything to be Olivia the tattooed lady, Olivia the lion tamer, Olivia the tight-rope walker, the flying Olivia, Olivia queen of trampoline and finally Ma...more
Olivia is a very silly pig who has a big imagination. In this book, she tells the class that for her vacation she performed all of the circus acts because the performers were out sick.
The illustrations are very individual. Everything is black, white and red. This way, it is very easy for the reader to pick out what parts of the pictures are important.
Young children will enjoy having this book read to them and older children will enjoy reading the book on their own. This book could also lead...more

I LOVE THIS BOOK. Olivia is the CUTEST pig EVER.In this sequel book to the self titled, Olivia, book, Olivia goes to school and it is her turn to inform the class of her vacation. She tells them that her mom took her to the circus and that all the circus performers had ear infections so she had to fill in and save the circus. She became various things such as a tight rope walker, a lion tamer, and a juggler. The illustrations are the best part of this book and it was such a joy to read. Better b...more
I love the Olivia books! I've never read about how Olivia saves the circus. I love her little sarcastic attitude and her wild imagination. Her thoughts and actions are so unpredictable and out there I think kids also find that funny. I know I thought she was funny. also, I love the illustrations they are very unique and I think they express Olivia's thoughts and personality very well. I think the Olivia books are good for kindergarden through second grade. I think they are targeted for around th...more
We've never met--to my knowledge--but Ian Falconer evidently knew me as a child. I was (and still am) this little girl. Today, children have forgotten the beauty of pretending and playing make-believe. This book introduces children to the limitless possibilities and joys of imagination. TV and X-box cannot compare. This is a story about a creative little girl being a creative little girl.

Most children dream of being in the circus; Olivia takes over the circus. When the performers fall ill, Olivia comes to the rescue: "Luckily I know how to do everything." She fills in for the ring master, the lion tamer, the tight-rope and trapeze artists, the clown and even the tattooed lady. I admire the swaggering swine heroine, who lives grandiose fantasies, that Ian Falconer has created in this and other Olivia stories.

A 3 star rating is probably a bit unfair, as the read aloud experience with this book was very good. Our visiting nursery class had been studying the circus, and identified most of the circus activities in this story, including uni cycling! With a little commentary a large proportion of the 4 year old audience understood the humour too! Unfortunately the illustrations were a little hard for the group to see easily, and I was a little concerned about the do-it-yourself tattooing too!

The irrepressible Oliva charms us again as she spins a yarn for her class. She tells them that she went to a circus but that all of the performers were out sick "with ear infections." She was able to fill in for them...in ALL of the roles. Oliva the tattoo lady, lion tamer, and trampoline queen. It's fun to pretend along with her, and it's really hilarious when the teacher sees through her tall tale.
Story about a girl named Olivia whose storytelling skills are awesome.
Great to use to teach about creative writing/storytelling.
Good for teaching order of events.
Can be used to teach the difference between fiction and realistic fiction.
S/S: can be used in a lesson on entertainment around the world (introduce children to the circus).
Character traits: outspoken, creative, wild imagination.

Olivia has wonderful adventures in her books. In this book Olivia tells her class about the time she saved the circus! When all the members of the circus got sick, it was up to Olivia to save the day. Olivia was a clown, a trampoline jumper, a lion tamer, and many, many more. This story was filled with illustrations in black, white, and red. The illustrations are very kid-friendly.
We haven't read many Olivia books, but we've seen a lot of the TV series. This book was very much what I expected in terms of plot, but I was surprised that it wasn't as complicated a read as I anticipated. Natalie has been kind of into the idea of the circus lately, so I wanted a book to show her pictures of the circus. This worked out well because the plot wasn't too involved and there wasn't a lot of text.

Wow, what an adventure for Olivia! This book would really spark students' imaginations, and I like that! I also think this book would be a good read aloud book in the classroom. This is the first of the Olivia books I've read, but so far, I really liked this one and I look forward to reading more about her adventures!
This is a great book to do a lesson on predicting. We can use this book to ask our students questions like: what do you think the character will do next. This book also is a great read-aloud to read to any grade level. These books are also wonderful to do a character study activity since there are many Olivia books and students can come up with many different things Olivia likes to do, etc. Great book to do sequencing activities to see if they understand the concept.
I went into reading this book for Storytime expecting great things from all the glowing reviews I have read. However, the kids didn't really seem to like this book. They lost interest in the black, white and red illustrations quite quickly and the storyline was too short and simple to really hold their attention.
I liked how this book shows children that nobody is perfect. This poor girl can't do anything without messing up and everyone still has fun with her! I think it is great for students who play sports or are very into a hobby that they tend to get frustrated with.

I think that Olivia is so funny. I love all of her crazy adventure and the fact that they are all in her imagination. This book would be great and entertaining to read in any classroom. It shows children that they can do anything with their imagination.
