This is a very beautiful publication, describing a world that got lost a long time ago, a world of multicultural Galicia and Bukovina - homelands to Poles, Jews, Ukrainians, Armenians, Germans, Romanians... Soon after having had started the book I was ready to write a letter to the author - such was my excitement with his work. Later, my excitement cooled down a little bit - in my opinion, many fragments are written in stereotypes, probably overtaken from the literary sources, on which the book...more

This one's really for Galician geeks. That much said, if you are one (as I am), and enjoy tales of nineteenth century railroads (okay), Ukrainian bandits (Damn straight, sign me up!), and really want to improve your pastoral (not in the religious sense) German vocab (ehh, this is more like eating vegetables... you know you should, you know that, long-term, it's useful, but...), then Pollack is certainly your man!
