Let me first say that Feehan's 'Dark' series is akin to literary crack for me. I just can't stop reading them! I agree that her books have become very predictable, yet I still love those Carpathian dudes. I want one for myself. Anyway, I picked up "Dark Curse" which is #16 I believe. If you've read one, you know the story. He's a tortured hero who's ready to give up his soul to the dark when suddenly...he hears the voice of his lifemate and is saved. He quickly falls under her s...more

First off, I LOVE The Carpathians! I know that these guys are almost always overbearing, controlling and bossy... but I still think they are sooooo sexy! Yum! This story about Nicholas and Lara is no exception.
Lara is part mage/dragonseeker/carpathian and as a child is kept captive by her evil grandfather Xavier and her "evil" father Razvan. These two baddies have made an appearance in quite a few (if not all, I dont remember) of the Dark books. They use Lara for her blood...more

Nicolas De La Cruz has come back to the Carpathian mountains to deliver a serious message to Mikhail Dubrinsky, the prince of the Carpathian people. The De La Cruz brothers have discovered a terrible plot against their people and the prince, and must get word to him and the other Carpathian hunters to remain vigilant. Once he has delivered his message, Nicolas has every intention of meeting the dawn and ending his life. He has been living in an emotionless, colorless world for many centuries, an...more
Another hard cover that was worth the money. I felt so sorry for Lara. Her story is the 2nd of the series that made me friggin cry. If you read previous reviews, you know the first was Lucian and Jax's story. I felt so bad for this girl I could not think straight. I was so overcome when Lara and her aunt my girl Natalyia discovered the truth about Lara's father! I read the book and saw so many sequels. Daark Curse has breathe new life into this series. There are so many possibilities and...more
I have a lot of respect and admiration for Ms. Feehan. I owe my entire love for paranormal/fantasy/romance in general to her. I remember browsing through Barnes & Noble years ago and stumbling into the romance section. I never read romance before because I was just never into sex in books and I suppose the old school covers with the hero and heroine completely turned me off. I must have been mighty bored on that trip because I found myself walking down the romance aisle. I came across a number o...more
Ok...1st of the Carpathians novels I tried and I decided to give it a go because the lead character had the same name as me (which I still can't decide if that was something I dug or not :). Anyway, I got almost all the way through and then my willpower gave out to the next book I had on my to-read list. There was a lot I was able to get into in this story, but it ended up losing me with too much blah blah blah and not enough action. I got so sick of hearing how scarred the main character was of...more
Centuries of fighting vampires left Nicolas De La Cruz ready to meet the dawn (end his existence) after completing one more task for his family, his prince and his people. With his darkness close, he finally heard the voice that could save him and his soul, as Lara Calladine stabbed a knife in his side to get him off her. She had come to the Carpathian Mountains to finally deal with her childhood nightmares and find the only family she ever knew. The Aunts had always been there telling her stori...more
I really enjoy the Dragonseeker plotline, but I had a few misgivings about a De La Cruz hero because while the Carpathians are domineering, arrogant and overprotective, the De La Cruz brothers are Carpathian PLUS.
Early in the book, Nicolas decides his lifemate should simply listen to everything he says because he's been alive for centuries and therefore must know best, but Lara gave him a kick in the pants and showed him first hand the strength she has to have survived her childhood wi...more

I am pretty stingy with my 5 star reviews. I like most books I read, because if I really hate them, I don't finish . . . I move on to other books because there are so many out there. And after all, 5 stars means "amazing."
Dark Curse is the 19th story in Christine Feehan's Dark series. This is the part of the reason I give this book 5 stars. How does she keep the stories and characters so compelling?

This is a Vampire story - I seem to be reading a lot of these at the moment! - and I enjoyed it for the most part. Lara's background is quite horrific and Feehan plays out the repercussions of such horror throughout this novel instead of glossing over them.
The best thing about the novel is the relationship between the two characters, although I was a bit taken aback at some of the scenes.

well... as for all her books, there is so much emotional descriptive fluff, that sometimes i skip a couple pages to get to the point. If it were consistant I wouldn't mind, but she will be nondescriptive of actions, it isn't as visual.
I don't need 3 pages to tell me about every muscle that ripped through each of them when CF could have just said in so many words... He pissed her off because he was so bossy. I think I can visualize that instead of being walked through sllloooowwwwllly...more

Lara Calladine is trying to uncover the secrets of her past in the ice caves in the deep in Carpathian Mountains. Part Dragonseeker, part mage and part human Lara is unique among the unique. Enter dark brooding Nicolas De La Cruz. Nicolas is a man with a dark past and has decided to end it when he meets Lara. Together they will work together to save The Carpathian people, uncover Lara's past and perhaps save each other.

As a big fan of the Carpathian books it really pains me to say that I didn't find this book as enjoyable as some of the others. The addition of a lot of magic rituals got confusing, the ice cave descriptions had me going around in circles. The spiders seem like they're strong enough to take over the world.

This one really started to get out there for me as far as the fantasy part of it went. So, okay, I can handle a race of super-people who can only come out at night and benevolently drink blood and who fight and kill vampires. With this book, we are really getting into the over-arching storyline, which is nice, otherwise all the books would pretty much be the same. However, weird parasites that infect the ground the Carpathians use to regenerate in in order to infect them so that they eventually ...more
I presume you know what the book is about. I'm letting you know what I liked or disliked about it.
I really enjoyed reading this book. My library is 95% virtual - meaning I'm an ebook reader but there are times when reading a book in print is better. Like at the beach, or boating, or out and about and it's those instances I've decided to grab the rented, library copy I've decided to use to read the Dark Series.

i have recently finished this series and thoroughly enjoyed it although some of the characters where much more prominant and likeable than others.Gregori who is the great carpathian healer and prince mikhail 2nd in command and also becomes his son-in-law marrying the princes daughter savannah hes crabby bad tempered proud and above all loyal to his prince and the carparthian way of life,I have to say that he was my favourite character throughout the series. Man, the Dark books are becoming plot-tastic! Who'd have thunk that this far into the series, the plot would pick up rather than peter out. The earlier books largely stood on their own, introducing the Carpathian world, but mainly just telling the stories of the individual couples coming together. Now? Plots are continuing from book to book, becoming more intense and more intriguing. Honestly, I think the books are getting better because of it.

Now, see, this is a series that I thought had definitely jumped the shark, oh, around book 15 – but I kept buying and reading. I still wanted me some dark, uber alpha Carpathian male to beat his chest and say ‘you are woman I am man and you belong to me’. I also really enjoy the way Ms. Feehan writes and the world building was quite fascinating to me. I think her mythology is unique and original– the first book in the series, Dark Prince, debuting in 1999. Her heroines have always intrigued me,...more

I tried, I really did. For the audio books listening challenge I wanted to start a series and get sucked in. However, its kind of embarrassing but I was at the gym, forcing myself to listen to this book and by chapter 5 I was muttering 'for Christ's sake' and shutting it off and my workout buddy was laughing at me...'another bomb? she says'. Yeah. Between the 'old, wise' Carpathian warriors arguing ad nauseum about letting their 'little women' go into battle, the endless foreign language pas...more
Lara and Nic De La Cruz's story. Lara's story reveal the details of the child escaped from the ice caves. She is mentioned within earlier Dark Carpathian stories. I was intrigued with the mystery of a girl child mage, human, Dragon-seeker. Her tale makes the read worthy.
The De La Cruz boys are more of everything - arrogant, irritating, and over bearing. No relief in that arena. However, Nic is given a clue as to the repercussions created by extreme dominance.... Let's hope he shares ...more

I used to love this series until I grew disenchanted with the whole Alpha male must provide smothering to his mate to keep the species alive. Yeah, I know it's protection not smothering, but it amounts to the same thing. This is a complicated story that had some redeeming qualities and since I haven't read this series in a while, I didn't know the entire cast of characters. But this was an audio and I was annoyed because the readers didn't know the cast of characters either so their voices, with...more
Lara Calladine gets away from the ice caves where her evil grandfather has kept her trapped. As an adult, she comes back to rescue her aunts who are also being held prisoner. When she gets in the area, she meets her lifemate Nicholas de la Cruz. Nicholas' authoritarian stances make her feel imprisoned again.

This is the first of the Carpathian Novels that I've read--Lara and Nicholas De La Cruz's story. It involves vampires, vampire hunters (Carpathians), werewolves--all my usual choices for entertaining fiction! It's an interesting blend of material, though--this book in particular involved organisms that live in extreme environments, a recent topic of interest to scientists studying life (or looking for it) in such far flung places as volcanic vents on the ocean floor and the surface of Mars. In the 19th installment of Christine Feehan's Dark Series (Carpathians) we have Lara and Nicholas's story. Lara is the great granddaughter of the Carpathians arch enemy Xavier, and as a child was trapped in an ice cave with her evil grandfather, her father who seems evil and her kindly Great Aunts who are trapped in ice. Nicholas is the 2nd oldest of our De La Cruz brothers from the Amazon rain forest. He was sent to the Carpathian Mountains to share information with Prince Mikhail that will...more

Too many, too long sex scenes. Since I started this series, the books have become much more explicit, which is fine with me (I read a lot of erotica, too), but 25 page sex scenes that are pretty boring after the first or second, is a big mistake by the author, IMHO. i spent a lot of time skimming over these and other parts of the book. I have noticed my ratings are going down, but at least we got an answer to some issues that have dragged on and on through the various books. ...more

Great addition to the Dark Series. We first saw Lara in a vision as a child in Dark Demon, along with two dragons. This story gives was a great way to not only prepare us for Razvan's story, but clears the way for two other stories. I really enjoyed the the turn around in attitude for Nicholas De La Cruz. I love a strong Alpha male, and the De La Cruz brothers definitely deliver, however, it is important to a story for the male to understand when his behavior hinders the relationship. And the br...more
It started so promisingly, except for a few dubious descriptions*. She was reluctant to trust him due to her childhood, and he was an arrogant SOB who was slowly beginning to realize it wasn't all about him. He was even restraining himself, since he knew she wasn't ready for a physical relationship with him. Then they turn into dragons and all of that seems to go out the window. I don't think I'll be finishing this one.

I like the idea of this book, and there are parts that I really enjoy. The only downside is that the author endlessly repeats herself. This happens always when talking about their backgrounds - how he was always bigger and stronger and saw things only his way and how she has always been cold as ice towards men and doesn't find herself beautiful. It seems unnecessary to repeat that throughout the book with subtle variations. Still, it's an interesting story, and I look forward to reading more of ...more
