I am not much of a non-fiction fan, but this work is interesting. It is an investigation into the friendship and eventual split between Albert Camus and Jean-Paul Sartre but is really much more. I am learning a tremendous amount about the history of post WWII France and the complexities of politics and ideology in France. To suggest that the breakup was over Communism is a gross exaggeration. That much I now know, and I am not even halfway through the book.

Loved this book, having always been interested in the split between these two. I still think that their split illustrates the tensions inherent in being an engaged intellectual. The story is still super-relevant today. Aronson seemed a little bit on Camus' "side" (because, apparently, history is on Camus' side, at least with respect to the Soviets...), but that was okay, because I know less about Camus and liked learning more.

Beautiful history of the lives of two great Existentialists (Sartre moreverso, Camus was merely a novelist... he'd refer to his life philosophy as absurdism), their rise to fame in the philosophical circle, their arguments, their relationships and the early death of Camus and Sartre's the flourishing of his career as a philsopher/novelist/playwright...

One of the most enriching and well researched works, as well as readable texts, I have had the pleasure to encounter.

Not a bad history of the relationship between these two existentialists.

Ugh. Biography does not always equal insight.
