This book was really good! It has really interesting relationships and lots of them. The main character is Sammie, who is trying to cope with her parents' recent divorce as well as her changing body. She has to deal with a best friend with an extremely "busy" love life when she has never even had a boyfriend. As her summer in New York City goes on, however, she realizes that she is now growing and discovering more than ever before. She makes some important discoveries about good friend...more

The divorce of Sammie's (aka Samantha) parents brought Sammie from Ithaca to New York City, to live with her mom. Ever since they move to New York, Sammie's mom been real depress and "lonely". Sammie, also, was not doing very good. She gave attitudes to her mom and do nothing around the apartment. All Sammie wants to happen is to get back the same life she had, back in Ithca.
Sammie really wants to feel happy with her new life, but her mom's not being a big help around. I don't re...more

Love and Other Four-Letter Words is an enjoyable, coming-of-age story about a 15-year-old girl named Sammie whose parents are on the brink of divorce. They decide to do a year-old trial separation and during this time Sammie moves to New York City with her mother. I especially loved reading the parts that described New York because I think the author did a great job of sort of "setting the scene," if you will. I thought that the mother was a bit of a caricature at times, but overall t...more

Sammie's life has just been turned on its ear. Her parents have separated and her college professor father has gone to California and her mother is moving them to Manhattan. All Sammie wants is her old, simple life back but now she must confront issues with her parents, her friends and herself in this refreshing coming of age tale.

This has always been one of my all-time favorites. It's well-written with witty dialogue and issues many people can relate to whether it's growing apart...more

I could tell this was Carolyn Mackler's first novel. It was cute and entertaining, with the main character Sammie going through a lot. Issues with her parents, issues with her friends, issues with boys--all at once. A fun, quick read.

My 2nd Carolyn Mackler book, which was the 1st book she had written. I really like her style and voice. Like The Earth, My Butt, and Other Round Things, she writes about a 10th grader, Sammie Davis here, whose parents are on a trial seperation, so she is moved to NYC with her mom and dog in a small apartment. She also has a self-obsessed best friend who won't let her really communicate. The voice seems very authentic and it is an uplifting, empowering theme for girls.

It's almost obviously Mackler's first novel. It feels unfinished, in all parts. Though, I will say it makes a good case for the moment when you realize the girl you've been best friends with for a long time just isn't quite who you thought she was, and you're really kind of better off without her. Though, props for the dogs storyline. That was spiffy.

I also loved this book by Carolyn Mackler because it told the story of a girl who is sort of shadowed by her superficial best friend who always gets the guys. I'm sure we could all relate to her at one point in our lives. It's just a nice story of finding yourself and true friends around you. Genuinity and power of all four-lettered words: love, hate, and so on.

16-year-old Samantha Davis is forced to move to a tiny apartment in Manhattan when her parents separate. She has to take care of her mother, who is too depressed to get out of bed and worries that she'll never get a boyfriend.

She eventually finds a friend in Phoebe and meets cute Eli, who just might turn out to be her Mr. Right.

Funny and heartwarming.

I read Vegan Virgin Valentine first. That was a great book, so this author had a lot to live up to. It was a slow start, but Carolyn Mackler managed to come out ahead in the end. I really felt like she captured the heart of Sammie Davis. Did Sammie find love and other-four letter words? You'll have to read the book to find out.
