I haven't read the first Alvin Ho installment, and it's not necessary to read them in order it appreciate this hilarious short chapter book. This would make a great read for kids who are ready for chapter books, but still like the occasional illustration and not too much text on each page. Descriptions are quick but vivid, the family dynamics are realistic and entertaining, and Alvin approaches his fears in a way that elementary school kids should appreciate. This is also an example of a book More...

After a misadventure during which Alvin is strapped (voluntarily, mind you) into a homemade straitjacket and taped into a box, Alvin’s dad decides that he and Alvin need some special time alone. Unfortunately for the cowardly Alvin, his dad figures that a weekend spent camping and hiking would be just the ticket. Alvin, his confident big brother Calvin, and his peppy little Sister Anibelly have lots of fun preparing for this big event – and when the time comes to leave, Anibelly manages to caj More...

I absolutely adored the first installment of Alvin Ho. This book is a good sequel, but I miss the spontaneity of the original.

I giggled throughout, but I wasn't compelled to read this in a single sitting. In fact, I misplaced my copy when I was heading to the reference desk and had to find it again on the sorting shelves. That definitely wouldn't have happened with the original Alvin Ho; I couldn't put it down until I was done.

I had hoped to see more of Flea in this boo More...

Alvin is still getting into mischief and wriggling his way out of sticky situations in the second book in this series. While it didn't tickle me as much as the first in the series, it was a fun read. In the second chapter, Alvin receives a package at the front door.

"I ripped open the kit right there in the driveway. Inside, there were pencils, stickers, handcuffs, and handcuff key, a rope, a Houdini's Greatest Escapes DVD and a gold card.

Ten Reasons why Alvin Ho: Allergic to Camping, Hiking, and Other Natural Disasters gets 5 stars.

1. When you can relate to one of the main characters it makes the story more enjoyable to read; Alvin and I must have been separated at birth.

2. Alvin is scared of the following: heights, the dark, public speaking, school, bears, severe weather, peeing in the woods, spiders, camping, enclosed spaces, long words, and the proper use of punctuations*,,,,////,,,,,

This was not one of my favorite books. I like books with a little more meat to them. This was a cute little story about a boy afraid of everything. His father decides to take him camping and his little sister tags along. There are problems galore to be solved in this book. I like things a little more realistic. Are there children out there afraid of things? Yes. I know of very few who are afraid of life the way that Alvin is. One of my middle schoolers picked this book up and read the first two More...

Isabelle allowed me to read this book to her, and she liked it so much she wanted to go back and read Alvin Ho: Allergic to Girls, School, and Other Scary Things. As a sequel, it felt like "more of the same", but it's a formula that works for me, so that's okay. (Although, the part when Alvin befriends a boy who is wearing the same night-vision goggles as he's wearing is a bit TOO reminiscent of Ruby Lu meeting her cousin for the first time and finding that they share the same love for More...

If I read this book as a kid I might think it was pretty funny. I might want to read more about Alvin Ho. I might even want to read it again. But I read it as an adult and it just didn't float my boat. Parts of it were funny and clever but after a while it started to feel more like a schtick. And here is what I really had trouble with: It takes place in Concord, MA, the place where I grew up. And there were just things wrong about the description and settings. I confess, I am a huge stick More...

Oh I do so love Alvin Ho. I'm still not sure where to put it, other than on a shelf in my heart. It's too juvenile for most middle grade readers and too advanced for many 1/2 readers. There is an adult nostalgic piece that may or may not turn kids off. But there is also a sweetness and honesty that kids may or may not really respond to. And so.

The characters are just so great. I melt every time the dad calls Alvin son. I cheer every time the gender neutral Jules is accepted as j More...

I really, really liked the first one and I definitely liked this one. Part of what makes these books so much fun are the side characters around Alvin. I'd love to see a book on just Anibelly (they did it for Superfudge and Beezus). As much as I liked the illustrations in the first book, I feel that many of them here were less than Pham's best. Many of them are just illustrations of the scenes in the book and don't really add anything new to the story. Don't get me wrong, they're still charming. More...

After Alvin gets himself trapped inside of a box, tied into a homemade strait jacket (Harry Houdini was cool!), Alvin’s dad decides the two of them need some bonding time. And what better place to bond than camping in nature? Too bad Alvin is afraid of camping. Along with his trusty Batman ring, and one expensive camping survival kit, can Alvin fight the forces of nature and get through the trip in one piece?

Another cute Alvin Ho book! I thought this one had more of a constant plotli More...

Second book for Alvin Ho who is afraid of everything. Talk about anxiety, this poor kid has series fears. This time, his dad is taking him camping and Alvin thinks about all the bad things that could happen including spider and snake bites, and all kids of natural disasters. He and his brother Calvin create their safety kit, charging their necessities to their dad's emergency credit card. While on their camping trip, Alvin meets another boy his age that is just like him. Alvin Ho is back and this time he's facing something even scarier than school: camping. Do you know what could happen to you when you're camping? You could be attacked by bears! You could get lost in the woods! There could be a tornado or an earthquake or a flood! So Alvin had better be prepared...

Just as delightful as the first title, this time Alvin's father plans a camping trip for the two of them. Of course, Alvin is terrified of camping. After his older brother, Calvin, helps him "upgrade" his list of camping equipment and then orders it online, Alvin asks,
"Will it cost a lot of money?"
"None," said Calvin. "I'll use Dad's credit card. He said it's for emergency use only -- and this is an emergency."
I nodded.

A great quick read about a very lovable character: Alvin Ho, who seems to be scared of EVERYTHING!! His father decides that he and Alvin need to spend some quality time together and go camping. Do I need to tell you that Alvin is deathly afraid of camping? The story revolves around Alvin trying his hardest to get over his fears (this might include a generator and misquito netting-) and try to have fun with his dad in the woods!! This book might be great for the lower-level readers. Great story. More...

I adore Alvin Ho.

After Alvin endures a nightmare about Henry David Thoreau (what could be scarier than going back 200 years to meet a dead author?), Alvin's dad decides to take him camping to develop his love for nature. Alvin is terrified, and his friends aren't much help. Scene on the school bus, kids listing all the merits of camping: You grow a beard and live like an animal...You either get hit by lightning, or you don't...If you can't start a fire, you could freeze to death... Oh, how I love Alvin Ho! I read this one to Andy at bedtime and he mostly enjoyed it. He'd ask for it some nights, and then tell me "no Alvin Ho!" on other nights. I told Wendy I think he dislikes Alvin for the same reason I dislike Cleary's "Jean and Johnny" -- the main character displays too many of the characteristics we dislike most about ourselves. Alvin's anxiety strikes a little too close to home for my Andy. One thing we both agree on -- Pham's illustrations for More...

Even though the first Alvin Ho wasn't a book I'll eagerly thrust into Mugger's hands, I had to come back for the sequel to see what Alvin would do with camping. His quirks are all back in this one, so he still won't talk in school, and I was still left wondering how his father keeps from killing him! (Last time he destroyed a collectible, this time he tops that with a $400 charge on his dad's "emergency" credit card.) Not exactly a role model in kid lit that you hope your child disc

If you liked the first one, yes, you'll like this. Anibelly and a few astonishingly adorable and funny illustrations are the highlights. (All the illustrations are good, but some are priceless--like when the boys describe what they think camping is like, and Alvin imagines himself dressed in skins, having grown a long beard.) This one maybe lacks depth compared to the first, and is more slapstickish, but all in all perfectly good. Alvin continues to be my preferred "is the new Ramona"

In this follow-up to _Alvin Ho: Allergic to Girls, School, and Other Scary Things_, scaredy-cat Alvin goes on his first camping trip. With some secret tricks from his uncle, a pile of camping equipment from his brother, encouragement from his little sister, and the example of Mr. Henry David Thoreau, he just might survive a trip into the woods. Alvin's voice pairs up with pen-and-ink illustrations (by LeUyen Pham) to bring his world to life. Another sweet and funny adventure from Lenore Look!

Alvin Ho is scared of just about everything, but especially the out-of-doors. So when his father suggests they go camping together, it puts him in a tale spin of out-of-control fears. Alvin confers with his uncle to make sure he has all of the necessary equipment to fight off any potential dangers. In fact, the ideas his uncle gives him only makes matters worse. Well, you'll see as you read this funny story. The illustrations are wonderful and help the reader to clearly see the emotions Alvin More...

Alvin Ho, a funny little second grade boy who is afraid of everything, goes on a real adventure when his father decides they should go camping. Don't forget now that Alvin is afraid of everything specifically the woods and anything to do with camping. Not quite as spectacular as the first book, but still highly entertaining.

THIS BOOK WOULD BE PERFECT FOR TEACHERS TO USE AS EXAMPLES OF LITERARY DEVICES AS THEY ABOUND EVERYWHERE!

An absolute delight, this book has it all - terrific awareness of being 9 going on 10 and perfect illustrations. Alvin is afraid of everything and the descriptions are priceless. Happily he has a pair of siblings who are also beautifully developed along with some very understanding parents and it makes for a genuinely happy package. Highly recommended, especially for the young crowd who need some humor in their lives.

3 1/2 stars. A worthy sequel to the first Alvin Ho book. Alvin is still afraid of EVERYTHING, but in this follow-up title he takes his fears into the great outdoors. Would probably help readers to have read the first book, but not essential. Love the illustrations in both titles. They add much humor to already funny stories. Good choices for early chapter book readers (especially boys) looking for a series.

Great little book for 6-10-year-olds. Marvin is scared of camping, but Dad wants to go camping with him. His big brother "borrows" Dad's emergency credit card to order all sorts of online items to help protect his brother in the woods. Uncle David gives him advice for surviving in the wilderness. Some of the advice turns out to be helpful (like using dryer lint to start a fire), and some turns out to be disasterous.

I would recommend this book if you have kids, and even if you don't. It is just a fun read! Alvin is almost the Junie B. Jones of boys and he is quite amusing. My 3 year old on up to my 9 yr old all loved it, as did I. The narrator of the recorded book version was great too. It was worth the checkout at the library. I would buy this book on CD even if I had money for frivolous stuff sitting around.

Do you know why you should always take toilet paper on a camping trip? Alvin Ho does; unfortunately, his dad does not. Alvin is a helmet-wearing, goggle-eyed, super hero wanna-be with a zest for life, so long as he can observe it from the safety of his own house. He is not happy to be dragged out camping where he will be exposed to any number of natural disasters. Little does he know that the biggest natural disaster in the woods is him!

Very much enjoying. Alvin Ho books are adorable and chock full of zing-y, funny, honest, and compelling half/fantastical-half/wry-real one-liners and situations.

Update: I enjoyed how, in this book, we get to see a bit of why Alvin is the way he is (hint: his dad!) Lenore Look does a fantastic job of breaking down larger concepts to bite-sized, funny chunks that remain honest while taking some of the "scare" out of scary.
