Have you ever: 'cut the cheese,' or 'let it rip,' experienced the 'silent but deadly,' or laughed out loud at the idiotic college ritual of 'lighting a match' to it, been prompted to 'pull my finger' or have accidentally 'stepped on a duck?'

You must have, since you are an earthly lifeform and having been a kid at least once in your lifespan, Jo Nesbø's Doctor Proctor's Fart Powder Series will certainly stimulate those memories of first time discoveries and newness, of the importance of being sil...more

The chief selling point of ‘Doctor Proctor’s Fart Powder’ is blatantly obvious. You would be hard pressed to find a child who didn’t think flatulence funny. And this isn’t normal gas. We’re talking about explosive power that makes the earwax press into your head while your eyes press out of it. Even more appealing, it’s odorless.

The good doctor, the eccentric of his sedate neighborhood, lives on the Oslo fjord, tinkering on new inventions that, like a powder intended to prevent hay fever, genera...more

Jo Nesbø is the most successful Norwegian author of all time. He has sold more than 19 million books, which are published in forty-seven different languages globally, and he is widely recognized as one of Europe’s foremost crime writers (ref. Harry Hole series). His debut children's book, Doctor Proctor's Fart Powder, released in 2007, sold more copies in his native Norway than any other children's debut, and rights have been sold in more than 25 countries, including the US. A joint German/Norwe...more

Typically when I see a kids' book with words such as "fart" in the title I don't give them a second glance. However, this book is written by one of my favourite thriller authors and the simple fact that he had written a children's a book was enough to make me *have* to read the book, never mind what it was called or what it was about.

Surprisingly, though the book is about an invention of farting powder, there is not a great deal of "toilet humour" to be found. Perhaps it's cultural, or it gets l...more

The kids absolutely LOVED this book. Farting is a topic about which we try to downplay while being mildly amused. I was skeptical that maybe this would be too gross. I started to read it aloud as we drove to the grandparents' house for Christmas. All the while I had in mind that I could pull the plug and quit reading it because I had back ups on hand. It wasn't necessary to do so. We were all amused by the story and the characters. There are lots of places to stop and make predictions which is f...more

Read with my seven year old son. Do not get concerned from the title. Fart powder indeed is a big part of this book but the plot is funny and engaging. It comes across in a witty way, not rude. At this age you do whatever it takes to have your child love reading. Sometimes, especially with boys, even the title helps. Highly recommend for ages 7-12

Juoni on melko dekkarimainen. Pahikset haluavat varastaa tohtori Proktorin...more

I was never a fan of bathroom humor, and this one felt like 250 pages too much bathroom humor for me. I'm not sure how well this book worked as a point of discussion for my EL410 class: some days we could talk until our time ran out, and some days I found myself trying to force a dialogue when it would rather trail off out the window. Part of the problem is that the translation is so awkward. The combination of bathroom humor and semi-distant, semi-omnipotent narration just wasn't gelling for me...more

Farts are funny. This is a scientific fact. Personally I simply don't know if I could be friends and associate myself with anyone who didn't think farts were funny.

Perhaps this is childish...but then again for 99.9% of children (and those of us WITH children know this starts at the youngest of ages--when they become aware of the sound of farts even!) farts are even funnier. I would dare say even that farts beat out anything else on the juvenile funny scale.

So it's no surprise that this book is...more

The title really says it all - this a pretty silly book for kids. What sets it apart from being just another silly book for kids is the intelligence behind all the goofiness. Nesbo, like Roddy Doyle in his Giggler stories, exposes the tricks of storytelling, and makes fun of them even while constructing a ripping yarn. The relatively intricate (and unapologetically implausible) plot where quite a few sub-plots and themes all get neatly resolved, is wonderful.

Most importantly this is a really, r...more

The plot of this book is about a boy who has moved in a new town where he is having trouble making friends. He starts to make friends with his neighbor who is also new and is also having trouble making friends. The main characters are Nilly and Lisa. They both started talking with another neighbor who was much older and was an inventor. The neighbor was trying to invent a fart powder. The kids liked this so they all become very good friends. But there were two mean brothers down the street and t...more

On the back of the ‘Doctor Proctor's Fart Powder’ written by Jo Nesbø is the claim that this is the story of a fart. And that is the truth.

But the prejudice that Nesbø used a vulgar and meaningless way to attract attention reader should leave aside. This is a high quality and very tense novel for children and young teenagers for which ridiculous physiological human need served only as a very good teaser for even better story.

Jo Nesbø, the Norwegian writer known for his world-wide popular thrille...more

This is a hilariously silly, yet simple read about a subject (farts, of course) that is inherently funny, and is made even funnier by adding a plot that includes a crazy inventor, helpful kids, and even a dash of "bad guys." I would have liked the illustrations to be a bit more detailed instead of looking like a kid drew them, but I suppose the use of basic drawn lines adds to the overall quirkiness of the read.

A girl, her very small new neighbor, and a nutty inventor band together to create, test and sell a powder that has unusually powerful properties!
Daniel told me I just HAD to read this one... but I think it's better suited for young boys than their mothers :)

Funny and engaging for the middle-grade booger/fart set, without being demeaning or truly gross-out disgusting--a remarkable feat in my opinion! The set is a must-have for my next k-5 library book order. It was, incidentally, recommended to me by a student.

Although I first sighed internally when I saw Matthew check out this book, it turned out to be a fun, smart, and very entertaining romp with little Nilly and Lisa through Oslo, Norway, and it led to looking up some European geography on the globe.

After reading his books for adults, I didn't know if Jo could make the transition to kid's books. I was pleasantly surprised. Jo's wry style reminds me of Roald Dahl and I can't wait to pass it along to my 11 year old.

Nilly and Lisa team up with Doctor Proctor to bring pleasure to the children of Oslo with Dr. Proctor's fart powder. What fun!! If only they could relieve themselves of the nuisance that is the twins Truls and Trym.

I picked this book up because I had high hopes based on the author's reputation. I also wanted to read a silly book for the genre contest happening in the Library.

I finished the book because it was silly, and there was no real reason to not complete the story.

I would recommend this to...more

The best book ever!

I choose this rating because it is now my favorite book. This book has everything such as...
*It is super funny.
*It has action and adventure.
*It has pretty cool illustrations.
I loved everything about this book. I liked the writing style and also liked how they lived in this made up place called Oslo.
I would recommend this book to everyone. If you like adventure it has it, if you like comedy it has it, it has some serious parts but it is mostly silly. This is my new favorite boo...more
