Arthur is in Kindergarten and is so excited about reading that he reads everything he can get his eyes on. While walking around the town he challenges his little sister D.W. to a reading contest. The prize is an ice cream cone, if she can read 10 words. D.W. is a clever little girl and collects at the end.
This book is very good for early readers. It gets them excited about reading. Readers will have fun spotting words all over the town, helping D.W. along the way.

Arthur's Reading Race by Marc Brown was a fun story to read. When Arthur learns to read in school, he begins reading all the time. Arthur makes a bet with his little sister D.W. that if she reads 10 words he will buy her ice cream. As Arthur and D.W. walk through town, D.W. reads words on signs; she is more aware of the meaning on the signs than Arthur. I think this book would be useful in showing students that reading takes place out in 'real life' and not just in books.

Arthur and DW are going to the ice cream shop. But DW must first read 10 words in order to get her ice cream. She picks out environmental text words and surprised her brother Arthur when she can read them.

Activity: Pick out environmental text words with the students in magazines and around the community. Keep a collection going throughout the week and ask students to bring in the text from home.

This beginner reader is about Arthur learning to read. Then he challenges D.W., his younger sister, to prove she can read 10 words. That seemed rather boastful from this guy. Nevertheless, D.W. rises to the occasion and earns an ice cream.

Eh.

This book would be great to read because students are able to make the connection that this is a tv show. I would read this book to first graders. Also the students are able to see how a brother and sister bond can develop by reading.

This book is good for ELL learners because there are stickers provided. When you see a blue word you find the sticker that matches it to read the story. This is a cute book for ones who do not think they can read. According to DW, if you are reading words outside such as park or police you are reading it doesnt have to be just in a book. This is a good lesson to teach ones who are down on themselves about reading.

Arthur & D.W. are on a reading adventure! If D.W. reads 10 words, Arthur will buy her an ice cream. Will she be able to do it? Will D.W. read 10 words in time? Will Arthur still be the better reader?? All this and more in Arthur's Reading Race! A wonderful read for beginning readers and little bookworms who just can't get enough words. =)

This would be a cute way to introduce new sight words. Have the students go on a word hunt and find as many words as they can read.

This is the first book I memorized entirely and "read" over and over again. I love Arthur books, especially this one.

Great book! This book is an example of beginning to read by recognizing building signs found in everyday environment.

Favorite part (remember, these are Lillie's words): "When Arthur and D.W. get the two ice cream cones. My two favorite flavors are the two they have. D.W. has strawberry, and Arthur has chocolate. Today we ate vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup and butterfly sprinkles. I ate all the ice cream and all the sprinkles and all the chocolate syrup. I loved it! And that's all."

Arthur's reading race would be a great book to read to encourage students that reading is useful and fun! By relating Arthur's experience with what the student's are doing, they will be motivated to read more often. Also, students may recognize Arthur from home where they watched his shows previously. ( text to personal life connections can be made)

Great story with Arthur and D.W. - Arthur tells D.W. that he's going to teach her how to read and she insists that she already can. They take a walk in the town and she reads the signs along the way - even seeing some that he doesn't. This is a good confidence-building story for young readers. I read the story and they read the signs, like D.W. did.
