Como ese otro libro de juventud que Borges quiso eliminar, Inquisiciones, este libro también peca de cierta pedantería, pero en este caso es menos soportable porque Borges intenta ser patriótico y criollista hasta un grado que suena ya insincero, minimizando sus influencias anglosajonas o intentando disfrazarlas (un síntoma es que llama a autores extranjeros como Shaw o Browne por sus nombres en castellano)Aun así, los temas e inquietudes de Borges ya están ahi.

Este libro tiene mucha de la lucidez y erudición características del Borges maduro, aunque estropeadas por lo que me sabe a una joven (e irremediable) pedantería y ciertos excesos en cuanto al estilo.

Une serie de ensayos en donde el autor se plantea los temas más controversiales de la época dentro del ámbito literario. Una pura muestra del criollismo urbano de vanguardia, y una oportunidad excepcional para vislumbrar a un joven Borges que luego se arrepiente de este libro.
