In this fifth book in the Magykal series, Septimus ends up on a captivatingly beautiful island, one of seven set in a sparkling sea. He's stranded there with his badly injured dragon, Spit Fyre, along with Jenna and Beetle. There are some strange things about the island, including a Magykal girl named Syrah, a cat-shaped lighthouse that has lost its Light, and an eerie pr

Kinda disappointing after Physik and Queste, but I suppose I was judging based on the thickness of the book compared to the others and the title. The Syren hardly plays any role in the plot. I mean, yes she's the one who lures The Cerys over and takes over Syrah but that's it. And Syrah in turn doesn't do anything in this book, and it just makes me want to read more Septimus Heap, the fact that she falls unconsious and doesn't wake up. Septimus's obsession with her is a little annoying, I mean, ...more

Five books seems to have finally gotten to Angie Sage. With the return of the Wizard Apprentice, Septimus Heap, the book seems to have lost quite a lot. Like they say, "sometimes bigger doesn't always mean better." Slow moving, the book took quite a while to get into things. And when it did, oh boy. The usual charm of characters that I hold Sage in pristine for, is lost. I quickly lost my love for the characters. It was heart-breaking. The plot was confusing as well. I wish she had put...more

Have you met Septimus Heap? Well, I had not til we bumped into each other this month. I am watching out for Christmas presents right now. And I found not just one but a whole series of them for my neighbors daughter. Thankfully Septimus was willing to be included in the endeavor.

Who is this character? Well, for that we would have to go back to the beginning. All the way back to Magyk. For that is the first book in this series. Septimus Heap Septimus Heap is the seventh son of a seven...more

Recommends it for: Grade 5 and up
I nearly devoured the entire book the first weekend after I got it and then realized that it would be gone too soon and doled out the rest of the book through the week to be finished today. I recommend it for those who have made it through the rest of the series and still want more.

Marcia rewards Septimus with a promotion for successfully having returned from his queste and he promptly uses his new freedom to leave on a personal quest to retrieve his friends from the Trading Post....more

Book five of the Septimus Heap series.(They really must be read sequentially, especially this one.)

I am always delighted with the growing variety of fantastical, compelling elements Sage weaves into these stories: castles, ports and covens and ghosts and wizards, magic cupboards and mysterious marshes, and now submarines and sirens! (I often wonder where she comes up with her ideas. I'm not knocking it, but I can imagine the latest features being suggested by a young child or as a ch...more

Themes: magic, family, good versus evil, redemption
Setting: the Trading Post, the Wizard Tower, and the islands

This is book 5 in the Septimus Heap series. I don't know why this is not more popular - it is very engaging and suspenseful. I love Septimus, Jenna, Beetle, and Nikko. They are very strong characters, but even minor characters like Stanley the Message Rat are well defined. They are big books, but they read fast. Maybe they are suffering from being compared to Harry Pot...more

Book review of Syren

Syren is a book about girl named Syara. She was possessed by an

evil spirit after she escaped the questing boat and swam to one of the

islands of Syren. After she was possessed for 500 years, she met a boy

named Septimus Heap. He was stuck on the island because his dragon,

Spit Fyre, crash landed on Syara’s island. Spit Fyre had badly injured

his tail and even though Septimus knew some phisyk, there was ...more

In her 5th Septimus Heap book, Annie Sage continues her same winning formula; a seemingly innocuous task unravels into an epic and often humorous adventure complete with an intriguing cast of wizards, witches, wolf-raised boys, royalty in training, ghosts, pirates, a dragon, and, new this book, a Genie and a Syren-possessed three hundred year old wizard apprentice. The action and camaraderie between friends entices readers of all ages, though, typical of YA fantasy, the adult characters often ...more

Great Fantasy reading from teens through adults. I enjoyed it and look forward to reading the others in this series.
We are huge fantasy fans in our house and when I saw a chance to review this book at The Product Review Place I knew I just had to grab it. This fabulous series by author Angie Sage will give Harry Potter fans a new tooth to chew. I totally loved this book! WB has grabbed up the movie rights for this series and I can't wait to see it on the big screen.

This series is often compared to Harry Potter, but I think in many ways it’s much different. The only parallels that I see are that it involves a boy, who at one point is an orphan, and magic. Definitely written for a younger audience, the Septimus books have a tendency to be a little silly sometimes and the endings easily resolved. However, in contrast, Sage deftly creates an interesting world with often odd and humorous characters who have the ability to surprise the reader. The plot structure...more

From the back cover:
Septimus is stranded on a remote island with his badly injured dragon, Spit Fyre, along with Jenna and Beetle. The island is captivatingly beautiful, but there is also something strange about it… not least the cat-shaped lighthouse and an eerie presence that sings to Septimus… Trouble is also brewing for Lucy and Wolf Boy, who have become entagled with some nefarious sailors.

I'm a huge fantasy fan and The Septimus Heap series is a great fantasy series. I've loved the first four books and Syren, at book number five, stays true to the Septimus Heap series as a whole.

I must say that Syren is more for a younger audience but it is actually still entertaining and really enjoyable. As the book is in sequence you have to read them in order. So if you haven't read any of the others I suggest you do so before Syren.

One thing I really like and also get ...more

I dearly love this series and am not sure how this one slipped past me when it first came out, but eagerly snatched it off the shelf when I happened by! One of the joys is the illustrations, so this is not a book I care to get on Kindle. Plus, I have a strange happiness that this book is more of a square shape than a book-shaped book. Not sure why that is, but there you go.

The story brings back all the favorite characters, ties up loose ends from the last book, and introduces some ...more

For the last 5 years the newest book has come out just before my birthday so my husband knows just what to get me. Funny thing is most years I forget all about it and then I am so excited for my book. I get such a kick out of this series. Each time I get a new book I reread all the books in the series before reading the newest one.

The series has Harry Potter like elements with magic and wizards and a young male hero but is not so dark and a very different writing style. There isn't rea...more

Angie Sage's young adult fantasy series, Septimus Heap, keeps getting better. Or rather, I should say, it has returned to the top form of the first couple of books. Here, in Book Five, we've got warrior djinn automatons threatening the Castle, sirens luring the good guys to their death, and spirits that possess the innocent and make monsters of them. What's not to love? Septimus Heap, the eponymous hero, is growing up and getting more complicated teenage problems, and age suits him. And fin...more

There is something about the Septimus Heap series in that it takes a while to really get going, you get hints that it will get exciting but it's only towards the end that it actually becomes exciting with a gradual build. his was still true of Syren, although I do think it got going a little quicker than the previous books. I think I am enjoying the stories more as we go through the series as well, and whereas before I read the other books without and real anticipation I am actually really looki...more

This book was slower then the other four in the series, but I did love how Angie Sage was able to integrate wizardry, science, royalty, sea-faring, military, witches, ghosts, and genies all into one story. It sounds like it would be a horrible hodge-podge, of characters, but somehow it works!

I also enjoyed the character development that played out through the different plot lines. I saw a more grown-up side of Septimus and Beetle, I was happy to see a humbled Simon Heap, and I ev...more

This book was not my favorite in the Septimus series. It had some cool things going on, but most of it seemed very repetitive.Yeah, I liked the parts with Aunt Zelda, but the whole island thing was plain creepy. This book still gives me nightmares when Septimus goes into the...i guess it would be called a tower. So if you enjoy chills down your spine all the time, read it...I actually do like those kinds of books, but this book was so creepy...the log book seemed so real, I'm not sure if I'd sug...more

I find it a bit surprising how rapidly the books in this series follow after one another (in fictional time). Septimus' apprenticeship is supposed to last seven years, and I believe Angie Sage intends seven books in the series; but, this is book five and Septimus has only completed half of his apprenticeship. In fact, Syren follows exactly on the heels of its predecessor, Queste, beginning the very next day. It makes me wonder whether Septimus might end his apprenticeship early....

I think the character development in this one was perfect, and do not understand the comment another reader made that it was not. I felt we learned more about these "tweens" as they are approaching adulthood, and I felt it was realistic development, too. The story line is, as always with Ms. Sage, engaging, and new characters come on the scene smoothly. The new characters themselves are interesting, and I find myself looking forward to Book Six--the wait! the wait!!!! It is so hard to ...more

Another satisfying installment in the Septimus Heap series.

Septimus and Spit Fyre set off on a quick trip to pick up Jenna, Beetle, Nicko and Snorri, but of course bad things happen. Three groups of characters (Septimus, Jenna and Beetle flying on Spit Fyre; Nicko and Snorri sailing on Milo's ship; and Wolf Boy and Lucy Gringe stowing away on a pirate's boat) all find themselves on a mysterious island. Interesting new characters are introduced, including a jinnie and a 500-year-old gir...more
